Re: I. Entry
Mulvey, only bothering to whisper if he thinks the giant bug hasn't seen him, mutters to the party "I'll move quickly to the right to allow us all a missile shot or two."

Re: I. Entry
Kernodle crouches down, (as if he needs to) to allow anyone with a bow to take a clean shot. He has his sword ready to attack.

Abelard isn't so bold as to charge at the beetle, especially while the others are shooting and throwing things at it.

Re: I. Entry
The beetle catches sight of the light illuminating from Abe's lantern and turns to face off against the party. Acting quickly, the giant but rushes towards Mulvey, leaving a flurry of the clicking sound heard in its wake.
It attempts to snap the elf in half with a snap of its powerful mandibles but, reacting quickly, Mulvey jumps back, avoiding the attack. He lets loose the arrow he already had nocked and, with a perfectly placed shot, sends the hostile creature into the insect afterlife. The creature continues to shed its light.
No other movement or noises are detected.

Abelard eyes the beetle and attempts to discern how bright the glowing glands are, what kind of radius they might illuminate.
"If these glands are bright enough, we might use them for light sources and conserve our oil... who knows how long we're going to be down here."

The glands (there are three), if removed, shine bright enough to illuminate a10' radius.Alethan wrote:Abelard eyes the beetle and attempts to discern how bright the glowing glands are, what kind of radius they might illuminate.

Re: I. Entry
Mulvey breathes a sigh of relief. "Elf 1, Dwarf 1" he scores. He carefully inspects the beetle's wound in hopes of recovering his arrow.
Re: I. Entry
Mulvey looks to recover the arrow from his kill shot, only to discover the shaft shattered when working its way through the beetle's protective shell.

Kernodle grins to hide his jealousy. BOut time you hit something he says to Mulvey.

"Maybe..."Abelard wonders aloud, "maybe we could cut the glands out, then use them as distractions. You know, throw them to draw something's attention away from our direction... Anyone have a knife?"

Re: I. Entry
Perhaps a bit more jocund after proving his worth to the party, Mulvey jokes with Abe, checking his ears. "Are those things pointy, Abe? With an idea that good, you must have some elf blood in you."

Re: I. Entry
Aye, good thinking on a potential distract. Luken will say as he borrows one of his daggers. Shall we continue this direction?

Re: I. Entry
Mulvey agrees with Luken. "Indeed, let's proceed"
Cavern
The party, having dispatched a second fire beetle, continues their travel in the original direction -- east. They quickly find themselves in a roughly circular cavern with a diameter of about 40 feet at its widest point. There's a single exit in the southeast corner.
---
I removed the light emanating from the fire beetle from the map, assuming the glands were removed and stowed away to be used as decoys at a future time. There are three total; I'll just need to know who has them.

Kernodle will check for trap doors, and anything else he might see in the room, being naturally superior in his build to check such things.

Re: I. Entry
The three light glands from the fire beetle are surgically removed from the carcass and Abe slips them into a small belt pouch at his side. Once the light glands have been secured, Mulvey asks Abe to arrange for his lantern to be kept at the opposite end of the cavern in order to keep unnatural light out of the southeast corner and begins to investigate this obvious exit. Meanwhile, Kernodle uses his natural familiarity with this sort of underground location to perform a cursory check for trap doors or other unnatural features.

Abe nods, "Yeah, sure. Happy to hang out here for a bit."
He looks about the room aimlessly, glancing up at the ceiling nervously every now and again to make sure there is nothing above them.
