Stymied by their inability to find the bandits' trail, the adventurers decide to return to Threshold. They are able to make it back to the Duke's Road 'ere nightfall, and camp by the side of the road overnight. Other than a brief rainshower near midnight their sleep is unmolested.

Yarthmont 16, AC 1000

It is early evening by the time the adventurers return to Threshold.

Yarthmont 17 - 24, AC 1000

Upon returning safely to Threshold the adventurers decide to let the mercenaries go, electing to give each a bonus of 10 gold coins. There is much bowing and scraping and effusive thanks as the mercenaries trip over each other in their haste to be the first to the tavern or bordello. The two stricken warriors are on the mend and appear almost normal -- albeit perhaps a bit twitchy -- and they, too, are thankful for their bounty. The former bandits grovel and swear to take up honest enterprises; one declares he aims to buy a cart and sell fried foods, whilst the other intends to become a blacksmith.

Severi and Rhys both decide it is time for them to practice with their blades in the hope of becoming better swordsmen, and thus begin a grueling regimen of exercises and training. Whilst they are occupied, the other adventurers take both ring and shield to the Guildmage, who agrees to identify them within one week for the price of 1,200 gold coins.

During their downtime the adventurers hear the following rumors:

An important gnomish diplomat was supposed to pass through Threshold on his way to Specularum, but is several days overdue. Runners have been dispatched along the northern road in an attempt to discover his whereabouts.

There is talk of war to the east of Penhaligon, of armies composed of orcs and hobgoblins and ogres emerging from the woods to harass the locals.

Several days after their arrival they begin to hear tales of their exploits in the Forgotten City being told in the inns and alehouses they frequent. There is talk of piles of treasure to be scooped off the ground, strange mechanical constructs and a much reduced army of orcs. At least two different adventuring bands set off to explore this strange city.

Gotcha. Everyone should note that the rumors I listed are essentially "free", and simply things you guys pick up walking around town. Now would be a good time to point out the Plot Hooks thread for review: viewtopic.php?f=70&t=1155

Aquar, sailor priest of Procan

"Yes, the waters south are much warmer," gurgles Aquar to the fish in the northern dialect of river salmon. He talks of tides and shells and corals to the fish in Threshold's rivers and lakes.

Missing his homeland seas, and tired of partaking the local taverns (for one can only bless so many kegs), Aquar on Yarthmont 20 exlpores nearby lakes and streams. He speaks to fish, finding their company a pleasant diversion. He hears rumors - the tannery is dumping poison into the north stream, firsherman down east piss into the lake too often, the giant turtle laid 12 eggs. None of the rumors seem particularly actionable to Aquar.

On other days he practice swings his hammers, imagining he is smiting undead, evil desert sorcerers and Bargle.

Mursley decides to devote his time to improving with his sling. It takes him a good deal longer than Severi, but he finally feels like he has a grasp of the techniques required to improve his ability.

Yarthmont 24, AC 1000

Myraal is finally done identifying the items. "This shield once belonged to a Thyatian knight by the name of Linpher the Lame. He lived some sixty years ago, and was presumed to have been killed whilst questing to bring about the destruction of a malevolent dragon that terrorized the folk a week or so west of here. This shield was enchanted in such a manner to protect its user from the breath of dragons. The ring is a puissant item, often referred to as ring of memory. It is of great use to a magic-user or other arcane spellcaster, as it allows the wearer to, once per day, regain knowledge of any spell she has cast within the previous ten minutes. This ring in particular seems to have been crafted in Glantri, as it bears the runes of the Jabrand the Boisterous, a wizard from that region." Myraal considers for a moment. "I will pay you seven thousand gold coins for this ring."
The shield is +1, does not count towards encumbrance and grants the user a +1 bonus to saves v. Dragon Breath, provided it is readied at the time of the save. Note that the bonus only applies to actual dragon's breath, and not another attack that requires the save but does not actually involve a dragon's breath attack. The description of the Ring of Memory can be found on page 309 of the rulebook.

During the week of training the adventurers decide to have the painting appraised. The one good thing about Threshold is the number of nouveau riche running around. The prevailing opinion seems to be that among certain circles oil paintings of obviously wealthy personages can only improve the decor, regardless of whether or not they are of any relation or, indeed, acquaintance. The companions have several offers, the best of which is for two hundred gold coins.

However, they also determine that the three fish crest most likely belongs to the wealthy Daro trading house of Linton. The merchant who informs them of this opines that the adventurers could likely see more than two or three hundred gold were they to return the painting to its rightful owners.

Rhys the Traveler

"Nothing is stopping us from going back there, you know. It sounds like we might even have some orcs to deal with still."
Speaking of which, there is also the bounty for the orcs we need to calculate. Or was that already figured? Might not be much, but at least something to note for bragging rights.

Severi Silvertongue, Elf

Severi sleeps on the matter of the ring, and discusses future plans with the rest of the party over eggs benedict at a brunch meeting.

"These other adventurers can ride forth, though, without the necessity of practicing their swordplay and awaiting sagacious certainty of the properties of the magic items we have discovered. I think they will likely outpace us on the way to the city, due to these other matters catching our attention." He shrugs, "Never mind, though. Gold comes and gold goes, after all."

"After considering it in some depth, I move that we sell the Ring of Memory. I would normally push for magical items to be taken by whomever would benefit the most from them, but this single bauble represents a sum in excess of our entire liquid gain. Letting myself or Mursley make use of it is too disproportionate as a distribution."

Thurgan, dwarf

"I'd say sell the ring as we didn't make so much from this journey as we hoped. Then maybe go back to slay more orcs and explore the rest of the city".

Mursley, mu

Enjoying his breakfast, he pauses and sighes "I have to agree about the ring. It is an extremely useful item, but it's use would be disproportionate, so we should get what we can for it."

Severi Silvertongue, Elf

Severi nods, and states that he'll inform the sage of the party's decision about the ring.

He then gets up to turn in the ears for a bounty, and invites the others to come along if they wish.

Myraal's Tower

Eyes gleaming, Myraal quickly draws up and signs a note promising the bearer 7000 gold coins, or the equivalent thereof, when presented to the Moneylender's Guild.

Rhys the Traveler

After much group discussion, Rhys suggests, "Let's make sure everyone is outfitted with a horse or sturdy pony, fill up our saddle bags with rations and extra sacks, and head back to the lost city. On the way, we can see if we can't find that fountain and at least give it a look-over to see if it might be worth investigating further."

Rhys will do just that. He will purchase 3 weeks of iron rations, an extra set of saddle bags, and 6 large sacks. Once he has them all loaded up on his pony, he will wait for the others before heading back to the intersection in the road where he suspects the path to the fountain may be found.
Additional Expenses:
(6) Large Sacks - 12gp
(3) Week, Dried - 45gp
Saddle Bags - 5gp
-------------------
62gp total expenses deducted from sheet

Severi, Elf

Severi buys a third week of rations, but expresses his reluctance. "I think that two weeks of sleeping rough should be enough for any man or elf. I sincerely hope that we spend no more than a fortnight out, and that these extra rations prove unnecessary."

Severi Silvertongue, Elf

The night before the party is scheduled to leave, Severi hosts an enormous, drunken brawl. He purchases great quantities of bread, beef, and beer, and offers lavish prizes to those who most effectively pummel their adversaries or, alternately, remain standing and continue to fight while possessed of interesting injuries. He dedicates this festival to any immortals who might happen to be paying attention at the time.

In order to reduce the likelihood of anyone actually being killed, the fights take place in an enormous mud-pit, the contenders are required to brawl in their small-clothes, and referees are employed to stop fights if life or limb is threatened.
See the money expended to no useful purpose.
