Re: Chapter 4: Shadows and Piercing Light

Seeing the others urge the captain up front, he gives a reluctant sigh as he glares at the elves he passes. Whilst walking past Deciedon and Flynn, he whispers to them a quick message of keeping an eye on them in his place. He grabs his soldier's torch and uses it to help light the path ahead. As Whitsell starts to lead the group north, they see the torchlight reflecting off of something, not quite metal but something more... stringy. To their right, another path branches off into more reflective stuff.

Whitsell asks,

Shall we go through this shiny stuff, or continue on the path we have been on? Personally, I find the plain generally more inviting.

Rand walks up to the shiny substance, inspecting it further, possibly spiders web? He will look around for a stick or some object to try and move the stuff around.

Rand breaks away from the marching order and inspects the path on the right that has a shiny substance. It is indeed webs upon closer inspection, and from what you can make it, it just covers a dead end. Heading back to the group you notice that the same network of shiny reflective stuff is a bigger series of webs. Behind them, lie no light sources, just darkness...

Are there other passages besides the two web-filled corridors?

From your current position... no. The torchlight only illuminates so far due to the reflective barriers. Inching closer with a torch, you can make out the outlines of another path to your immediate left, behind the webs. Actions?

Rand, "Looks like spider webs, we had them a lot in the sewers. They got as big as a man, if there's a path without those webs I suggest taking that..."

Sunshine

Sunshine will borrow a torch and clear away some webs. Then he will check for traps beyond the webs in the left heading passage.

Whitsell waits patiently while they check out the passages, but inches a little toward the cleared path they were following, subtly hinting that is his preference as well.

Deceidon steps back, wary of what might make such a big web. He takes advantage of the shadows to hide, or at least thinks he does.

Looking around, you find no other paths clean of webs. Unless you consider the areas you already explored applicable routes. Sunshine is quick to take a torch to the webs and help clear a pathway ahead. Sure enough, the passage breaks off to the left into another room. The elf notices an old torch hanging forth from the wall and lights it along the way, further illuminating the area.

As Sunshine finishes checking for traps, he motions for everyone to follow in to see what he is seeing. In the room are crates and sacks thrown together in small piles, an hold holding cell and an all too familiar torture table. The three newcomers are quick to break away from the group as they notices some of their equipment lying about here.

map update will come soon, either tonight or tomorrow morning

Sunshine

Sunshine the elf spies his precious long bow and rushes up to snatch it. He kisses it and looks proud.

This! He says, has been in hell, I think . . . and heaven, I know. A family heir loom . . .

The elf finds his pack and gets it on. He attempts to be sly about a blow gun and a scroll case full of darts, to no avail -- into his coat those items go.

Anyone who pays attention gets an evil elf eye.

Elethil also recognizes and retrieves his equipment: a backpack and bedroll, a normal-looking long sword, a long bow that's less fancy than Sunshine's—and a coat of shimmering, cloth-like mail, which he dons underneath his clothing as quickly and discreetly as possible.

Whitsell will look around for anything useful that isn't one of theirs.

During your search of the room, you find a cache of old rations that could last for a couple of weeks if consumed properly within a small group, and some flasks of oil used for lanterns. There are about 4 of them in a small footlocker. Various mining equipment can also be found, reminding everyone that once upon a time this area was a mining expedition, for what exactly, they don't know.

The solitary holding cell contians a skeleton, still shackled to the ground. Years of time has done its work and the skeleton seems as if it will to a pile of ash if nudged. There are some scratch like markings on the ground near the skeleton and an old food pan.

Deceidon takes two oil flasks to replace those used in battles with skeletons.

Flynn holds Amberlynn's hand. "It's okay my sweet."

Deceidon then searches for secret or concealed doors.

Here are my two rolls for Elithil and Sunshine. The elven prisoners, figuring out what Deceidon is doing, joins in his efforts (so says the DM) and brings about mixed results. Elithil's canary yellow eyes, though powerful in the dark, cannot seem to detect anything. Deceidon's search is fruitless, but Sunshine is quick to discover something amiss in the walling towards the back, near the holding cell. A few sections of the earthen wall appear indented much farther in than usual, producing a set of well hidden holes in the shadows of the room.

Sunshine

Sunshine follows Deceidon's lead and looks for secret doors.

He discovers strange indentations and summons Deceidon for a look.

It appears to be 3 deep holes. Are the holes part of a trap? An artifact of mining processes?

Detect trap
[1d100] = 41 fail by 1

He awaits Deceidon's input.

Whitsell will grab some rations, and take the other 2 flasks of oil, since he has a lantern. IF someone else wants it, then let me know.

Other mining equipment, like what? picks? or lantern/candles? anything Whitsell being a metal expert might be interested in?

There would be mining equipment that you would find in medieval fantasy mines.... ummm, some chisels and hammers, pick axes, lanterns and oil, torches, carts....there isn't really any sheets of metal laying about if that's what you mean. Though you do notice something a bit out of place in the room in addition to the features of the wall Sunshine and Deceidon is examining, the equipment and items were laying on top of a hay pile, a hay pile in the middle of a mountain mining facility...

-----

As Sunshine takes a closer inspection of the wall, he notices that there are three different holes in the wall, each extended some distance inside. There is a hole in the lower right corner of the area you are in front of, near the ground, a hole at waist level found to the left, and another in the upper right corner, a bit more narrow than the other two. (a scalene triangle is formed if you use the holes as vertices)

What will your actions be?
