I guess I should have cast dispel magic on the held guys instead? Is there a way to prevent burning a round and wasting an unnecessary spell like that in the future?

Is the big G on the map the Messenger or is he that black circle? And what is the MGC?

Personally, I don't think turning the ghasts was a waste at all. If we hadn't won initiative, they'd have been on us past the wall of fire, and Gaerys or Arqos (who are auto-hit while held) would have been paralyzed in a way that couldn't be dispelled.

This would be a good time for a dispel magic, however.

The MGC is the marsh giant cleric.

Yeah, the ghasts are no joke, and I think Ethan, at least, was going down regardless. It's comforting to know that Frostfell is protecting him, even now. Here's hoping he can pull out of one more tight spot with the help of his friends!

I agree about turning the ghasts but I was referring to the silence spell. I'm not whining, I just think that in a dire situation like this, we shouldn't be wasting attacks. Or am I confused about which enemy is still alive? Is it the Messenger or the MGC?

Silence is also golden, IMO. We saw what cleric spells can do. Neutralizing casters is absolutely a priority.

If Vorsyin uses a dispel magic will its effect target just one person or all the people held?

A few notes as we wait for the posts to come in:

- Messenger is absolutely still alive; MGC was not caught in the WoF, so it is still alive too.
- I think you are discounting the value of neutralizing a spell caster, OM
- I like the use of spoiler tags to discuss actions OOC; actions may be coordinated in that fashion, but the clock is always ticking..
- I like the fact there has been no intra-party fighting!!!
- The dispel would hit all three party members.
- After last night's episode, doesn't everyone want to play a Dornish spearman?

Vorsyin takes a deep breath. He knows how vulnerable he is right now, one hit from the Messenger and he will die. Part of him wants to run from this place and keep running but in his core he knows he must do his duty. The evil here must be rooted out and destroyed.

He quickly takes stock of the situation. He thinks there best chance is to get the held party members in the fight. Vorsyin summons the magic to Dispel Magic and break the hold over the rest of the party.

Thought a recap would helpful:

Ghasts and Mgc behind the wall of flame - dead or neutralized at the moment.

Olaf engaged in melee with the Messenger - only remaining hostile.

3 party members held.

Would it be a good idea to use the Heal scroll to bring Ethan back to nearly full fighting strength?

I don't think Ethan would vote against it.

Oooooohhhh! My Bad! I thought when you said there was only one enemy left, that meant the Messenger was still alive but the MGC was caught in the WoF and crisped. That's why I thought it was a waste to silence him. So he is BEHIND the WoF but yet still silenced then? Got it! Sorry for the misunderstanding.
I'm cool with the heal scroll idea. Does Hollis have that? Flam would love to actually cause some damage this round but I will wait till others have posted their action to see if more healing or defense is needed.

Hollis has the scroll of heal and Vorsyin has cast dispel magic, so it would seem you have the green light to go on offense (or support the offense), OGRE MAGE.

Ethan, lying unconscious at the edge of the fire wall, does not vote against being healed. He jus keeps asking himself why Magnus likes squishing him like a beetle so much.

Flambeau noticed how the Magic Missile spell was ineffective against the Messenger.
He is starting to think that it might take brute force to bring down this enemy.
As much as he would like to throw his hammer and test his theory, he thinks better of it.
Instead, he notices that Hollis has the same idea to heal the fighters, so he will cast one of his CSW on Gaerys.
CSW [2d8+1] = 15+1 = 16 Nice! That might buy you one more hit. :P

Date: Autumn, 432 ca., Campaign Day 10
Time: 12:40.8
Weather: 53 degrees
Location: Steading Dungeon - Rockpile

************************
Magic in Effect: Lorath - Levitate
Prayer - cast round 5 (60' radius'+1/-1 to rolls)
PfE 10' from Arqos
Wall of Fire - Cast Round 7
Arqos - potion of super heroism
**********************************

The tide of the battle shifts to favor the party. Perhaps sensing this turn of events, the Messenger acts first - landing a heavy blow on Olaf. The Messenger then takes a few steps back (SE) down the narrow (7-8') hallway. Only one more fighter will be able to engage the Messenger in melee.

Olaf 10 damage!

Olaf moves forward to swing back. The fighter's hands slip somewhat on the grip of the axe, so he knows that he did not take his best shot. The Messenger easily parries it aside.

Vorsyin dispels the foul magic holding his fellows, while Hollis and Flambeau apply healing magics to Gaerys and Ethan. Gaerys regains a fair bit of strength while Ethan rises "good as new."

The ghast screaming continues behind the wall of fire, then ceases.

DECLARE ACTIONS!

[No map, but messenger is ~15' further south east ...the party's lightsources begin to dim, so they cannot tell what lies beyond.]

**************************

HP:
Vorsyin: 18/49 [-1 level...let's sort out the XP afterwards]
Gaerys: 33/69 (!)
Hollis: 24/52
Lorath: -6/40 (down!!!)
Ethan: 71/71
Olaf: 12/75 (!!)
Arqos: 89/91 [please inform as to potion stats]
Flambeau: 41/75

Arqos potion stats: He fights as Level 12 and has 23 extra HP (for 112/114) for 5d5 rounds. Should I roll, or do you want this to be one of those secret duration things?

Magnus: Can another fighter swap places with Olaf, or is he committed to being our front-line fighter next round? Also, how big is the Messenger? Roughly man-sized, or larger (i.e., what damage class are we doinghoping to do)?

Everyone else: If we can change fighters, who do we want up front? Ethan? Arqos? Arqos will probably do less damage than Ethan, but he can also take more. Arqos's attack rate is 3/2, his THAC0 is 9 (for the moment), and his sword is +4 vs. the Messenger. Ethan's attack rate is 2, his THAC0 is 11, and he's using a +3 sword that has a chance of freezing his opponent (although I'd expect magic resistance to make that unlikely). Ethan also gets +3/+3 from weapon specialization. Both have AC -2.

Do we want to try to throw up a barrier behind the Messenger to keep him from retreating to someplace he may have reinforcements or backup?

Another hare-brained idea: some shadow-based creatures react poorly to having continual light cast directly on them. I have no idea if that would happen to the Messenger, but it might be worth a try if no better options present themselves.
