Ethan tries to finish off the remaining giant before the Messenger arrives.

To Hit giant with Frostfell (ThAC0 11) [1d20+6] = 1+6 = 7 damage [1d12+6] = 1+6 = 7
To Hit giant with Frostfell (ThAC0 11) [1d20+6] = 19+6 = 25 damage [1d12+6] = 12+6 = 18

...and things don't go so well :(

Sorry about not coming bacl right away. I was caught up in a big work/life push.

Date: Autumn, 432 ca., Campaign Day 10
Time: 12:40.5
Weather: 50 degrees
Location: Steading Dungeon - Rockpile

************************
Magic in Effect: Lorath - Levitate
Prayer - cast round 5 (60' radius'+1/-1 to rolls)
PfE 10' from Arqos

**************************

The monsters again take a narrow initiative, acting early in the round.

Ethan and the marsh giant continue their "dance of death". The giant strikes first, connecting with another heavy blow, which breaks Ethan's collarbone. Ethan retaliates, but completely misses the giant. The knight tips off balance, nearly falling.

Ethan 9 damage!

Natural 1 makes Ethan lose second attack.

Welcome back!!!! Hope all is well.

The elemental, once a powerful ally, creaks to a stop instead of attacking the giant. Ethan sees out of the corner of his eye that the enormous being has now begin to turn back towards the rockpile!

Gaerys, now the wiser, side steps yet another strike from his vicious opponent, then quickly counterstrikes with a wooshing downward slash. The blow strikes true - The head of the beast drops heavily upon the ground. Its severed neck gushes bright red blood as its body crumples.

The ranger has but a half-second to breathe before his next wave of foes arrive...as wretched and half-living as the earlier ghasts, but these seem to be of reptilian, rather than human stock. There is simply no time for fear.

Lorath pelts one with an arrow, slowing it somewhat.

Arqos bounds into the fray, stepping in front of the ranger and unveiling his brilliant holy symbol. The ghasts are unaffected by the power of the Lord of Light. They tear into the paladin with claw and fang. Arqos is caught by the first brutally quick claw, but the rest of their attacks do little against the mighty armor and combat skill of Azor's disciple...

Natural 20...Arqos 3 damage (no crit because it took a 20 to hit)...Save versus paralysis please (at +3 (prayer/PfE))

Vorsyin turns to the enchanting voice of his wife, which suggests to him to approach her for a deep, loving kiss. The mage can do nothing but accept as he sees the beautiful woman materializing right behind him. The two embrace passionately. But the warmth of love suddenly turns cold, as the mage feels the very mana drained from his soul.

VORSYIN DRAINED OF 1 LEVEL! Lose 3 HP. You can pick the spells you lose

Hollis completes his prayer to the Old Gods, granting the party their favor. He also shakes off whatever it was that was cast upon him.

Flambeau calls forth the warmth of R'hllor, which takes much of the pain of Olaf's injuries away. Olaf can do nothing but catch his breath.

Olaf - recovers 28 HP - gave the party a break here because this spell and the one below really should have gone off simultaneously.

The Messenger dismisses his flail-like appendage and begins a low, growling chant. After most of a minute has passed, he thrusts his fist up, then brings it down violently with the clenched fist intact. A pillar of flame, some 10-15' feet in diameter, strikes down upon the group massed tightly on and around the rockpile. Lorath, Flambeau, and Olaf take the worst of the flames, while Hollis and Vorsyin manage to somehow avoid the worst of the flames. Vorsyin's "wife" is on the edge of the flames, but seems to be unaffected.

The inferno is absolutely devastating! Most of the party is consumed in its wake. Apart from the damage to their bodies, some of the party's equipment is at risk. Olaf is fortunate that he has few non-metal possessions, as his lot survives. Lorath sees his pack catch fire and a trusted ring melt away.... Flambeau coughs from the smoke, then looks down to take inventory of his belongings.

Lorath - 34 damage!!
Vorsyin - 17 damage
Flambeau - 34 damage!
Hollis - 17 damage
Olaf - 34 damage

FB - please roll two item saves for your BoH (and contents  ) and one for your Slippers. If you fail both on the BoH (or roll a natural 1), it and the contents are gone. Slippers get one save. Won't make you roll for any other items.

*NB - I am going to continue to roll players' saves for damage - it is really no different than rolling a monster's to hit roll. But I am going to let players roll their own saves for death/paralysis/etc., though I reserve the right to move things along.

The party once again finds itself in dire straits...but this IS the BBEG after all... Retreat might be unpalatable, but the party has done brutal damage to the giant...no, to the Messenger's forces. Surely an attack against the Fist would be hobbled and the party knows more about the origin of the giant attacks than they ever dreamed. But then again, the evil would be left to fester, and likely grow.

***************************
HP:
Vorsyin: 18/49 (-1 level)
Gaerys: 17/69 (!!!)
Hollis: 24/52
Lorath: 6/40 (!!!)
Ethan: 38/71 (!)
Olaf: 22/75 (!!)
Arqos: 89/91
Flambeau: 41/75

Only the combined strength of his faith and Hollis's prayer to the Old Gods saves Arqos from paralysis at the touch of the ghasts.

Save v. Paralysis (6): [1d20+3] = 3+3 = 6 (!!!)

Further actions TBD. Will he be pressing the attack, or guarding the party's retreat?

FWIW, Arqos's PfE aura should block the elemental from getting to Vorsyin—if the paladin doesn't attack anything, that is. OTOH, Flambeau has a 91% chance of retaking control of the elemental with a dispel magic. Hollis has an 82% chance. See MM p. 37. That assumes dispel magic will still take over control of an elemental that's broken free and that the MM uses "magic-user" in the general sense of a spell-caster, not that the dispeller has to be an MU. Vorsyin could retake control with a dispel magic under just the first assumption, but he's a bit preoccupied.

Flambeau sees the flames as a sign from R'hllor and rejoices in them despite the searing pain.

His Magical Bag however? Not so much...
BOH save [1d20] = 1 that sucks! No point saving for the items inside I guess :(
His slippers....
Save for SoSC [1d20] = 7 Shortest list of magic items EVER!
I guess that's one way to eliminate unwanted magic items  at least you know I'm not cheating the rolls.

So if we did want to press the attack, what might be the best approach? Assuming Arqos's PfE would keep the elemental from getting to Vorsyin, I'd suggest
  • Flambeau cast silence, 15' on the Messenger to keep him (it?) from casting,
  • Hollis turn the ghasts,
  • Lorath hit the Messenger with a magic missile to keep him from casting anything this round (or throw another jar of wildfire into the passage the giant left through, to block it off at least temporarily),
  • Ethan and Gaerys try to finish off the giant, and
  • Arqos buff with a potion to take on the Messenger next round.
That would still leave more giants incoming, probably, and whatever is going on with Vorsyin. Next round, Flambeau could try to take control of the elemental and send it at the Messenger or dismiss it. The Messenger should (I hope) be held at bay by the PfE aura from physical melee attacks until Arqos attacks it, except vs. anyone that has attacked it.

Hollis and Flambeau would also probably need to get into a position to turn & cast without the rock pile being in the way.

Anyway, that's my suggestion for a stay & fight scenario. I do think we need to neutralize the Messenger's spell casting one way or another even if we do plan to retreat. We're not getting out alive if he/it can keep tossing spells at us.

I think it's casting:

The chanting seems like it's part of spell-casting, and "most of a minute" matches flame strike's 8 segment casting time.

I agree that we need to silence the Messengers spell casting regardless of our decision.

Couple notes here:

Damn, the party would have been screwed if Arqos were paralyzed...and he was only saved because of Hollis's prayer. Wow! That there is some exciting gaming.

Messenger is absolutely casting spells.

Sorry Ogre Mage....bad break... :( I tend not to be too harsh in terms of requiring item saving throws (RAW is every item, every time after a missed saving throw), but a massive fire spell thrown down by the BBEG is going to warrant some collateral damage.

Everyone on the west side of the rock pile sees the woman that Vorsyin embraced.

I've always played that dispel magic cast upon an elemental dismisses it back to its home plane - house rule internalized. OSRIC does not expressly provide for the effects of DM on an elemental. Thanks to Zhym, I see that the MM does, though there is some ambiguity there. I am going to rule that Vorsyin could dispel magic to take back control and any other caster can dispel to send it back to its home plane. The OSRIC rules regarding dispel magic apply.

And presumably the woman appears just to be a woman to the rest of us? I don't want to metagame here but I would have Hollis attempt to Turn her if there was any clue she was undead.

She sure is hell is not a normal woman...that is for sure. But magic user, undead, demon, devil, spirit, etc. that is unknown at this point...

Someone help me out here please. RAW? BBEG? (I'm an idiot!) big bad evil giant?
Don't sweat it Mag....I'm the one blowing the saves. (cloth vs. fire is probably a 19 or 20 anyway)
Is it possible for Flam to cast the CCW and attempt to Turn this wench in the same round? If so, he will give it a try.

RAW - Rules As Written
BBEG - Big Bad Evil Guy

Turn and Spell are each full round actions...you would need to do only one in a round.

Don't forget about the ghasts! If One of them sneaks an attack through again, we could be in a bad way. And we do need to stop the Messenger from casting. We could probably buy a round with a nice fast magic missile, but then he's back and casting next round.

It's unlikely that whatever is on Vorsyin is really a...whatever it seems to be. Succubus? If it's really a succubus, we should all just start rolling our new characters now. :D Perhaps dispel magic would be more appropriate than trying to turn it?

We should coordinate this as best we can. Should I silence, turn ghasts, or dispel magic? Depending on what the other PCs will do of course.

The problem is we have two clerics and three things that need clerics.

If we get Vorsyin back, he can try to regain control of the elemental with a dispel magic. If we don't turn the ghasts, Arqos will probably be fine (it took a 20 to hit him) but Gaerys will probably be doing a great impression of a statue at the end of the round (if he lives). If we don't stop the Messenger from casting, even worse things may happen.

I guess I'd say our priorities ought to be Vorsyin and the ghasts, with Lorath hitting the Messenger with a magic missile to interrupt any casting that might happen. Either Hollis or Flambeau should be able to auto-turn the ghasts, so maybe we should have Flambeau, as the higher level priest, try to dispel whatever's going on with Vorsyin and have Hollis turn the ghasts?

Then we hope we win initiative.

I guess I'll get things started with posting actions...

Gaerys suppresses memories of being paralyzed by the ghasts. If no cleric turns the ghasts, Gaerys will attack the ghasts. If a cleric does turn the ghasts, Gaerys will press the attack against the Messenger (hoping Ethan can freeze the remaining giant).

Giantbane (THAC0 12): [1d20+2] = 14+2 = 16 Dmg: [1d8+2] = 1+2 = 3 (S/M) [1d12+2] = 5+2 = 7 (L)
Giantbane (THAC0 12): [1d20+2] = 11+2 = 13 Dmg: [1d8+2] = 7+2 = 9 (S/M) [1d12+2] = 3+2 = 5 (L)
I obviously don't know what the Messenger is, so please add +10 and double damage if it happens to be a giant under all that.

Vorsyin hears the voice of his wife calling and he turns to see her before him. Without thought he moves to her and embraces her and kisses her as tears stream down his face.
His joy is torn away as he feels a portion of his very soul ripped from his body. As an instinctive move he pulls himself away and takes stock of the situation before him.

"THE ELEMENTAL!" is the first thought that pervades his mind as he realizes that the entire party could be destroyed by the elemental now that he has lost control. He casts Dispel Magic in an attempt to re seize control of the elemental and have it destroy the creature before him that he stolen part of his soul.

Regaining his composure, Ethan attacks the giant again, desperation starting to sink in as the Messenger's strength becomes obvious:

To Hit giant with Frostfell (ThAC0 11) [1d20+6] = 11+6 = 17 damage [1d12+6] = 2+6 = 8
To Hit giant with Frostfell (ThAC0 11) [1d20+6] = 6+6 = 12 damage [1d12+6] = 6+6 = 12
So that was better... Ethan has the small problem that he's on the far side of the messenger, though I suppose he can jump if he needs to. We *really* need those ghast-like things turned, though, or this is gonna be a short fight
