Prelude: A Night at the Depot [All]

#1 Post by ybn1197 »

As the band Iron Man takes the stage, the air in the bar feels to charge with electricity. With the band opening with a cover of their namesake, the electricity seems to discharge into the crowd and everyone begins to have a good time. With the completion of the song, the band quickly shifts into "Hail to the Haze" from the 2013 album "South of the Earth." The crowd screams with enjoyment as the band shows their talent for both covering Black Sabbath as well as their own talents.

With the band having taken the stage, the influx of patrons has slowed to a small trickle as most of already arrived to see the show from the start, however as Iron Man begins their third song of the set, a group of four burst into the club. The first one in tosses the bouncer at the door to the side like he's a rag doll. The next two maneuver in behind the first taking in the club as if it were a buffet. The last one follows the others in, taking a moment to grab the stool the bouncer was sitting on and wrench it into the door handles, making the doors impassable from both inside and out, at least till the stool is removed.

Channing

Channing grabbed her rag to wipe down the bar of the spilt tequila and beer foam from her last order, her eyes following the guy about her age who was walking off with a tray of shots. She had been trying to get out of carrying the tray herself and had succeeded, but now she was just waiting for the entire things to crash to the floor. And who would have to clean it up? Probably her. Sighing, she threw the rag back over the hook behind the bar and moved to follow the guy to at least shadow him as he carried the tray so that, in the end, she could at least say she tried to prevent the incoming disaster.

But she never made it fully out from behind the bar before Robbie was being tossed into the crowd. She did not scream, though several who had been in the way or nearby did. She stared at her dazed coworker for a full second before it registered what she was seeing. She looked up toward the entrance to the bar just as the other guy was barring them in, and that was about when reality hit. We're all going to die, she thought, clear as day. She took a step back, and then another, before ducking down and out of sight behind the bar.

Leo is heading over to Laurel with the drinks when he turns to see what the disturbance is. Recognising trouble he dumps the tray on the nearest table and finds his cousin.

"Stay behind me, there must be another way out of here" he looks around for a fire exit, the rest rooms or a back room to head to.

Laurel

Laurel is only half paying attention to what's going on over at the bar, half wanting to see how Leo does over there, but as the band begins their set her attention is split. Well, up until everything suddenly shifts and the night of fun at the club listening to music and catching up with her cousin and friends turns into something that you expect to happen in fiction, not real life. The scuffle catches her attention first - the bouncer being literally thrown into the crowd and that starts the shift of the atmosphere.

Heart pumping and adrenaline kicking in, the redhead unzips her skirt pocket and goes for her phone - holding onto it tightly and dialing the familiar numbers: 9-1-1 as she spots her cousin. And no part of her is going to argue with him about staying close right about now because they're all, obviously, in danger. "Okay - I'm calling for help too - what the hell is even happening right now?" She knows that he doesn't know the answer any more than she does, but it escapes anyway, her mind awhirl. Is this a robery? Is this some sort of...weird gang initiation? Is it violence for violence sake? She has no idea and she sure as hell doesn'tw ant to find out. Still, she presses send and puts the phone to her ear, the other hand free and ready (at a moment's notice) to grab onto Leo as she damn near literally shadows him.

She's scared, butshe's not giving up and she's not going to do nothing. And she is going to get out of here...somehow.

Leo feels the familiar kick of adrenaline as his body responds to the danger, from years of practice he resists the urge to panic and spends a second enjoying the rush before directing his attention to getting to the closest exit away from the danger.

"I've no idea, but let's not wait to find out" he grabs Laurel and starts to move.

Julia

Julia has a nice buzz going and while the night isn't going like she hoped, she's still relaxed and enjoying the band. They're more metal than she likes but they are very technically proficient (except the dude on bass, he sucks  ). She was just wondering if she could get a mosh pit going when the commotion starts at the entrance to the bar.

At first, Julia is eminently unconcerned. She's been in her share of bars much rowdier than this one and a group of punk dudes causing trouble seem like her kind of scene. But when the bouncer is physically tossed like a rag doll and the front doors are barred shut, all kinds of red flags go off her in head. This doesn't look like general rowdiness, this looks serious.

Thinking now is a great time to eliminate some of that beer she's been drinking, she gets up and heads to the ladies room. Most of the others will probably make a mad dash to the back door, she thinks. She affects an exaggerated drunken stagger to make it look like she's just had too much to drink and is unaware of the commotion, but once in the ladies room she immediately looks for a window she can fit through. Even if the situation doesn't end up being as serious as it looks, she intends to be prepared to make a hasty exit.

Odin is lost in the moment. Playing awesome music for an appreciative crowd is all he wants out of life. The loud amplifiers and drums, the stage lights in his face makes it almost impossible the percieve the crowd. He can only feel their emotions as he plays, a quasi-supernatural experience he is all too familiar with. The sudden shift in this emotional state is jarring. He glances up, struggling to see beyond the stage. The front row is all backs, worriedly staring away from the band. Odin glances at the others, wondering what they think. He doesn't miss a beat, just in case.

David

He is unable to hear the Sister's response to a drink as the commotion unfolds. I knew this place was bad, but this is ridiculous.

"Friends of yours, Sister?" He asks with a smirk as he finishes his drink and turns to lean against the bar, watching the newcomers. He reaches for his gun, expertly hidden under his suit, and keeps it partially hidden by his side.

"Not a typical robbery, is it?"

Channing

The band was still playing. The band's still playing!? Of course the band was still playing. The band was located at the far back of the bar, away from the entrance, where the thugs or whoever they were had entered. Channing figured that the band playing and the drunk people who were too inebriated to know what was going on would probably be a good distraction from the other people trying to escape. But it didn't feel right. She knew her little "hiding place" behind the bar was about as clever as a dead rat, but doing anything else would make it even less clever by announcing her presence.

Still... the band was playing, and there were drunk people who still had no idea what was going on. So she jumped to her feet, with an annoyed curse under her breath, and reached the light switches. With a quick flick, the 3am "go the fuck home" overhead bright white lights flipped on. She flicked them off and back on a few times, trying to get people to pick up that something was happening, before she left them off. She pushed through the nearby door into the backroom and headed for the employee smoke break exit.

Light flooded the club. Odin blinked in surprise. Than the lights went off, then on again a few times, turning the scene into slides in a projector. The first slide: the crowd is looking at the entrance, some trying to run away. The next slide: the bouncer is nowhere to be seen, the door is jammed shut with a chair. Another slide: 4 people walking towards the crowd, manacing and confident. Odin only saw crap like this in newsreels, and wasn't planing to watch this one all the way through. And finally: the bartender, looking determined, staring him dead in the eye, flicking the switch off a final time. He unplugged his guitar, turned around and grabbed the drumsticks, assuming the others saw what he saw, but not the drummer all the way in the back. "Show's over dude, and if we don't scram, so are we!" He glanced at the rest of the band and started towards the backstage, with his guitar flipped onto his back.

Front of the Club
As Channing is flicking the light switch, one of the troublemakers spots her. It seems inhumanly possible, but one second the interloper is standing in the front of the club near the door, the next second the man (now that you can see him clearly) is sliding over the bar directly in front of Channing and is grabbing her wrist rather painfully. With rancid breath he says "Now, now sweetie. You're ruining the surprise for everyone. That's not nice." Before she can move, the man is lifting Channing off the floor and tosses her over the bar. She lands in a heap on the opposite side of the bar before she can ever react.

Laurel pulls her cell phone from her purse to unlock it and dial 9-1-1 in order to get help to the club. Unfortunately, before she able to finish the call, the cell phone flies from her hands of it's own volition. Or does it? One of the interlopers is only a couple of tables away from Leo and Laurel. A woman dressed in leathers and chains with strange trinkets pinned or stuck to her clothes. She stares at Laurel before bringing her right hand up and extending her pointer finger. Shacking her hand in a "You shouldn't have done that" motion she starts to cackle at the two relatives. Leo scans the club to find another way out and spots another exit sign lit in the back of the club near the stage. It is pointing in the same direction the band came out of when they took the stage to start playing.

Back of the Club
Julia, effecting the manner of someone who has had far too much alcohol, makes her way to the back of the club. She spies the signs for the restrooms and her heart begins to drop. The sign indicates they are on the opposite sign of the building to the back emergency exit. And this building buts up to another building on that side. Her hopes of finding an exit begin to fade. But she then starts to hope that there may be a window in either the bathroom or the hall itself which will lead to the alley out back (if there is one). She enters the hall to see a door labeled Women to the right. Further down the hall another door labeled Men. And the hall ends in a blank wall.

On the stage, the band winds down the set as they watch the chaos unfolding before them. Dee stands mute at the front of the stage holding the mic. He turns to face the rest of the band and has a WTF look on his face. He turns back to face the disbursing crowd and says "Just what the fuck is going on here? Who the hell do you faggots think you are? Do you know who are screwing with? This is our show!" Louis takes the moment to be funny and plays "Ballad of Jimi Hendrix". Unfortunately, the interlopers don't take it in good humor and one throws a chair at the stage. It lands harmlessly between Louis and the drumset. Seeing things breaking down and getting violent, the band turns and heads back stage only to find a couple more people dressed in the same "gothic biker" vein as the ones in the front of the club. But one of the bikers has a roadie by the front of his shirt and blood is flowing freely down the front of the roadie's shirt and his eyes are glazed over.

I'm sorry Rex, I forgot this is your first time with the Storytelling system. Typically, most actions require an Attribute and Ability together to form what is called a Dice Pool. For hand-to-hand combat, you will use DEX (attribute) + Brawl (ability). You have a DEX of 2 and a Brawl of 3. Your have 5 dice in your dice pool. The Storytelling system uses only d10. So you would roll 5 dice and see how many beat the difficulty. For example, if an action’s difficulty is a 6 and you roll a 3, 3, 8, 7 and 10, then you’ve scored three successes. The more you get, the better you do. You need only one success to perform most actions successfully, but that’s considered a marginal success. If you score three or more, you succeed completely. Also, a result of a 10 is always a success, no matter the difficulty number.
One more basic of a roll is a “botch.” Whenever one of the dice comes up as a 1, it cancels out a success. Completely. Take the die showing 1 and one of the dice showing a success and set them aside. If none of your dice comes up a success, and one or more dice are dice showing 1, the roll is a botch. If you score at least one success, even if that success is canceled out and additional 1s remain, it’s just a simple failure.
OK, so go ahead and give me another roll, this time 5d10, each die rolled separately to see the successes and failures.

William

Thanks for the help.

Brawl [1d10] = 3 [1d10] = 10 [1d10] = 10 [1d10] = 5 [1d10] = 9

3 success, 2 of which are 10's. No 1's so a complete success.

Julia

Julia has a sinking feeling that she's going to have to find another way out of this bar. She hears the commotion starting to take place in the main room, which confirms her suspicion that things are spiraling out of control fast. She isn't frightened -- she's rarely frightened -- but she also isn't stupid. While she's been in her share of fights, she knows there's far too many interlopers to take head-on. Maybe she could catch one by surprise, but not that many.

Just to make sure, she checks the lady's room to see if there is a window. If there isn't one, she checks the men's room. She isn't the least bit shy if the men's room already occupied. If either restroom has a window, she will try to exit the building through the window.

If neither one does, it will be time for Plan B: Continue to pretend to be drunker than she is and try to approach one of the gangers like she wants to join in on the fun. Just another punk who's on their side, looking for some mayhem.

I can describe 'Plan B' in more detail if that's the direction this goes. Her goal would be to try to get in their good graces just enough that she might be able to escape out the front if they stop paying attention to her, or to be enough of a distraction that someone else could get out the front and go for help while she holds their attention.

Leo spies the exit behind the stage and pushes Laurel in that direction "Go, the exit by the stage, I won't be far behind"

He turns to the woman "I don't know what you're on lady, but you've chosen the wrong guy" he moves forward and goes to punch the woman (brawling/boxing).

Hope you don't mind, I'm going to have go at rolling some dice, obviously this might be negated by other stuff going on
DEX 3 + BRAWL 4 = 7 dice (boxing speciality)

I know, punching a woman..not very chivalrous...but it is the age of equality

"What the fuck!" Odin shouts as he moves in to help the roadie. He brings his Les Paul over his head and swings it down at the biker's back. "Whoever the fuck you are picked the wrong bar to hit!" He will try to drag the roadie to safety - or at least clear a path to the exit - with the band's help if possible, but will retreat if outnumbered.

Channing flies over the bar and through the air. That much force should not have been possible from one person, but she can barely think that before she is hitting a small round table, sliding across it, hitting the floor and rolling until she ends up on the opposite end of the bar from where she started. She managed not to throw out her hands to try to brace her fall and probably end up breaking both wrists in the possible, but her body still hurt. Everything hurt with that achey bruised feeling, and it took her several seconds to find her breath again.

That's what I get for trying to help, she groaned inwardly as she rolled onto her side. The bar floor was covered in spilt alcohol and crap that had been trailed in from outside. It was sticky and stank, but she made no move to get up. Instead, she reached over her head and grabbed onto center column of the bolted down table and curled herself around it. For now, she'd try to play dead, under this table, out of sight, but if someone tried to grab her again, at least she'd have something to hold onto.
