Initiative Order
  • 19: Klilxuac
  • 16: Sky
  • 7: Twig Blights
  • 5: Hargrem
  • 4: Kelben

Round 3
Klilxuac angles back towards the center of the chamber and blasts another blight with a Fire Bolt, setting it aflame.

"Make sure to pick up the kindling," Sky purrs in the sorcerer's direction. "We'll get a fire going so you can see better soon," she continues... then shatters another twig blight with an accurate jab with her rapier.

More twig blights continue to approach mindlessly, but only one is in range to make an offensive attempt, but is unsuccessful in its weak scrape attempt against the well-armored cleric.

Hargrem, urging on his companions to keep up the fight, calls forth another blast of radiance down upon the rotten tree being that just missed him, but the creature manages to fight off the effects.

Kelben, watching as the nearest opponent remains on its feet, lunges at it, jabbing with his rapier. His strike sends splinters flying, but the persistent foe remains upright and ready to continue the fight without fear or hesitation.

At least three more of the mini-treefolk lumber forward.

My mistake.

Pinkie is dead. I was confusing games, and opponents, and gave the twig blight a resistance it didn't deserve (so Kelben would have killed it last round).

There are just the three twig blights remaining, as shown on this updated map (with the killed blights removed):

Qelgrax Klilxuac

Tired of the Twig Blights, the sorcerer decides to step up his game. Stepping 15' due west, Klilxuac draws deep within himself before propelling TWO Fire Bolts at the Blights to his south.

Hargrem

The cleric moved into position to engage the two twig creatures. As he did, he saw two fire bolts blast just over his shoulder. He called upon Tymora to continue to bless him with radiant flame.

Sky commends the person who cleaned up all the broken sticks.

She resumes her ranged attacks, once again raising her crossbow and firing at the blue-red twig.

  • 19: Klilxuac
  • 16: Sky
  • 7: Twig Blights
  • 5: Hargrem
  • 4: Kelben

Round 4
Klilxuac slides to the chamber wall to his left, positioning himself behind the pale briar. Targeting the pair of twig blights advancing from the south, the sorcerer draws upon his inane powers of sorcery to twin his Fire Bolt spell, sending a bolt at each of the par -- the effort, however, required a significant mental strain, and caused his aim to be slightly off, as both bolts sail harmlessly overhead.

Sky continues to sit back and pluck the the blights with crossbow bolts, turning the one nearest to her into a pile of sticks.

The pair of remaining twig creatures mount attacks against Hargrem and Kelben, but fail to inflict any harm.

Hargrem calls upon his Tymora and calls down a blast of radiant flame... which crashes down just behind its target.

The sneaky gnome next to the holy man continues his impressive work with his rapier, splintering yet another one with a successful jab with his rapier.

Only a single twig blight remains.

However, hints of movement and hushed voices from deeper within the unexplored cavern continue to offer the suggestion of more.

Frustrated that his spells are not as effective as he feels they should be, he nevertheless continues his tactic, unwilling to waste more potent spells on such a weak foe.

The Voice
Klilxuac remains in place and continues his frustration as his fire spell fails to connect with and ignite the small wooden adversary.

Sky begins to enter the cavernous area, creeping from one stone wall to the next, and peering around her surroundings. The outer wall to her left reveals a few cut out areas resembling the rest of the environ, but no new surprises.

The remaining twig blight reaches a branchy hand at the cleric, but has its attempts bashed aside by the holy man's shield.

Hargrem, in turn, continues to send flashes of flame descending down upon the stick figure, this time connecting and torching it, ending the immediate threat before Kelben has an opportunity to miss with his rapier.

"You there," a calm male voice, emanating from further within the chamber, hails as the sound of battle begins to subside. "What brings you to my grove?"

The source of this sound remains unseen, but it clearly originates from deeper within the large grove area.

Qelgrax Klilxuac

The sorcerer takes a few steps further into the room (right behind where Kelben is currently). Oh! Hello. We have heard of this wondrous apple tree, and we were interested in seeing it for ourselves. I hope you don't mind.

The Voice
"You there --" the voice hallowly echoing off the walls of the expansive cavern. A moment later, Klilxuac takes a few steps forward and engages the source of the voice.

"Oh, hello," the sorcerer starts. "We have heard of this wondrous apple tree, and we were interested in seeing it for ourselves... I hope you don't mind."

"Mind?" the calm voice replies. "Why would I mind?"

"Please -- please, come take a look."

The voice is coming from further south, but still out of view.

Hargrem

The cleric just looked at Klilxuac and shrugged. "Well, let's go take a look," he said. With his shield in a defensive position, he proceeded further south leading the way.
Move south until something comes within eyesight.

The Gulthias Tree
Hargrem shares a glance with Klilxuac and shrugs. "Well, let's go take a look," the cleric says; then, with his shield raised before him, he begins leading the way, clanking south in his metal armor.

With a row of the pale bushes to his left, the holy man begins heading towards the voice -- after maybe 30-feet, the outline of what was once a walled structure rises from clearing. In sections. These individual wall sections are about twenty feet high, which is less than half the height of the cavern's ceiling.

The fungal light -- from the walls and ceiling -- continues to illuminate the area.

The mostly intact remains of a stone circular tower stands at the corner of this sunken structure, and Hargrem is the first to pass through:
Gulthias Tree.jpg
Gulthias Tree.jpg (124.37 KiB) Viewed 893 times
A heavily armored, young human male with a shield and sword, and a blonde, young human woman in a robe fit for a noble flank a a middle-aged, bearded human male wearing a hooded brown robe and armed with a staff and sickle.

Even from your distance, it's obvious something is "off" about these younger humans, and a more directed inspection of them reveals that their eyes are black, and their skin is gray and has the texture of bark.

Several varieties of plants grow around the perimeter of the walled sections, including a few suspicious-looking saplings, but their importance pales before that which stands at the courtyard’s center.

In the center of the stone structure grows a tree. An evil tree by all appearances, with its blackened, twisted limbs reaching upward like a skeletal hand clawing its way out of the earth.

Behind this haunting tree stand even a few more twig blights.

The middle-aged, bearded male proves to be the source of the calm voice.

"I am Belak, called the Outcast," he starts. "And this --" he says, turning and waving his arm back towards the tree of evil directly behind him. "This is the Gulthias Tree."

"It's beautiful, no?"

She can't be absolutely certain, especially from her current distance, but Sky strongly suspects the "young human woman in a robe fit for a noble" is the missing daughter, Sharwyn. The "heavily armored, young human male with a shield and sword" may be the brother, Talgen; the friend, Karakas; or, most likely, the man they left with, Sir Braford.

You recall being told the twins -- Sharwyn and Talgen -- would be wearing gold rings emblazoned with the Hucrele family emblem.

You'll need to be closer, but you can make an Investigation check to see if you can make out the ring on either of their fingers.
