Chapter 04: What lurks below
Chapter 04: What lurks below
The four of you have arrived at Rat Ridge, following a kind of tip from an unknown drunkard in the pub of your village Slowcroft. He raved on about a disappeared 'Princess Regina' who he wanted (back?), about a reward from her father 'Lord Gung', about Rat Ridge, and an evil adversary called Wob somehow involved in all this. The name of Wob caused fear among others in the pub, having been heard already earlier in scary rumours.
The pieces of the drunkard's story didn't quite fit with what you already knew about the Gung family or about Rat Ridge, but nevertheless intrigued your taste for adventure. Korin swiped a bag of unidentified items from the drunkard, who later passed out.
So, after some hours on horseback, you all stand at an entrance, roughly 40 ft above ground on the west side, of a passage that seems to go inwards into Rat Ridge, a rock you previously knew as being unexcavated.
Your horses have been secured outside, on the south side of Rat Ridge, by Ox and Jacob, near another possible passage filled with rock rubble. Something behind the rubble frightened Ox, Jacob and the horses.
Just inside the west wall entrance are two opposing metal plaques, showing embossed demonic faces, some of which details can be pressed in different combinations, so far resulting in either emission of a foul-smelling gas, a spurting flame - - or, unluckily, if some are pressed long enough: an explosion, which Korin and Ox discovered.
Another button combination deactivated a trap in among the overhead wood beams.
It is early evening. In the flash of the gas explosion you briefly saw the passage continue on- and downwards. But for now, all you see is this: Actions!

Jacob will continue down the corridor, checking the floors, walls, and ceiling for traps as he goes.

Korin will also go along with Jacob but is limited by his stature to only check the floors and walls at his level. Korin will do so for the next 30 to 50 feet. Then stop and wait for the others. Or stop as he finds a trap and attempt to disarm any traps he locates.

Re: Chapter 04: What lurks below
Jacob relays his certainties and cautions the others about those he is not certain of before continuing on, still searching the walls, floors, and ceilings.

Korin nods to Jacob and continues on with their work in relative silence.

Korin stops and lights a torch. Then continues with his work a bit slower having the one hand free to check for traps unless he finds a torch sconce to put the torch in.

Korin stops after hearing something and holds a hand up to stop Jacob "hold up there Jacob, I heard a noise like metal clankin' not sure how close or far away it was but I think we need ta wait for everyone to follow us."

Norbold Ernessaeia [Sylvanian Elf Cleric: Scale Mail AC 6 : 2 / 2 HP]:
Norbold follows behind the trap seekers with a bow & arrow at the ready & drawn, when walking, but does not have the bow drawn when the searching is going on. (don't what his arm to get tired!)

No more sound can be heard down the passage for the moment. (However, out in the open lands a desert wind can be heard building up).

The noise Korin briefly heard was either faint and close, or very far ahead, he couldn't quite make out which

Re: Chapter 04: What lurks below
Korin still not sure about the sound location. He however now clearly sees that the passage starts to slope a bit downwards from here. After a while, Jacob notices the sloping too
Re: Chapter 04: What lurks below
Now the whole party can clearly see that the passage is starting to slope downwards.
Jacob continues to search the next 10´:

Jacob continues to search the next 10´:
- he is not able to determine if there is any trap on the left wall
- he is not able to determine if there is any trap on the floor
- he feels kinda certain there is no trap on the right wall
- he is certain there is no trap on the ceiling, as he can see that the trap mechanism he deactivated further up controls this part of the ceiling also
- he is absolutely sure there is no trap on the left wall
- he is absolutely sure there is no trap on the floor
- he is absolutely sure there is no trap on the right wall

Again Korin taps into his dwarf abilities and tries to Determine depth, detect grade/slope, detect sliding/shifting walls/rooms, detect
traps involving pits or stonework, in the passage ahead.
