Not overly perceptive, Hanson often relies on his agility instead.

The party prepares to enter Odlo's house. Hanson strides up to the threshold, and opens the door. He is immediately met by a writhing yellow mass streaming out the door! The mass immediately heads for his pouch of rations, which the leather-clad outlaw quickly tosses to the side. The contents are devoured by the time the pouch hits the ground.

Within a second or two the party realizes the yellow mass is comprised of hundreds of red-eyed yellow salamanders. And they. are. hungry.

The mass breaks and the amphibians head towards Yarnold, Zygmund, Sisyphus, and Radahn. But all four think quickly on their feet, casting aside their food before the creatures devour it (and likely them too!). Though all four newly-minted adventurers are safe, they have lost their rations to the wave. Please remove rations from the 5 PCs mentioned above.

Hailey watches in horror as the wave heads towards her pony, but the salamanders have no interest in Wallflower and the mass disperses into the tall grasses surrounding Odlo's property. Duala is thankful she left her hen at home!

Silence returns as Bobwhite must wonder whether it was luck or divine providence that kept them from targeting his biscuits.

GM rolls dice

As calm returns, our brave adventurers enter Odlo's modest home. They search his few rooms, overturning pots and pans and going through his few papers (he is [was?] not much of an archivist). They find no clues but they do easily locate his pantry. The contents have clearly been devoured by the salamanders you just had the pleasure of meeting, and they've left plenty of droppings behind for you to remember them by.

Palmero searches the outside of the house for any indications of the tunnel or other clues, but sees nothing but a mildly neglected yard and its usual contents.

As expected, the far wall of the pantry has a large hole dug into it. Next to the wall to the left leans a shovel. On the right is a chair with a coiled 50' rope and a brand new torch. The recently dug hole gives way to a tunnel that slopes downward into cool and silent darkness. The walls are rough-hewn rock but the footpath appears to be smooth, well-worn and covered in a thick layer of dust. There are two sets of footprints in the dust, both leading downward; neither lead back up. The footprints seem to match the size of Odlo and Kelvran's feet.

Hanson seems eager to explore the tunnel and begins to make his way down the tunnel, torch in hand. Deuteria hastily attempts to organize Rolf, Bilberta, and then Hunwald to lead the way, with the others falling in behind.

1 xp awarded to all.

Do you proceed? I have Hailey, Hanson, and Hunwald as torch bearers with Hanson, Rolf, Bilberta, and Hunwald in the front. Please let me know if others are carrying a torch. Actions?

Deuteria again organizes together Rolf, Bilberta, Hanson, and then Hunwald with his torch, a promising Vanguard, and heads into the tunnel first, as the others quickly canvas the house. Rolf holds his axe and does as he's bidden. Hailey follows behind them with Deuteria.

Bobwhite loiters, having searched the house.

Ayre, Baye, Cotgric, Duala

Duala will join the trek down the passage pitchfork in hand. Baye will follow behind lighting a torch before he does down. Ayre will follow behind and Cotgric will be last making sure that the mining / construction is sound.

Hunwald, Nordman, Rimilda, & Wenyld

Hunwald advances in with his torch held high. "Watch your step everyone."

Nordman follows along, keeping alert. Sling at the ready.

Rimilda takes her place. "Everyone in order now, no crowding."

Wenyld takes her place, doing her best to go unnoticed.

Legless tries not to slip and fall in all the droppings, investigating the shovel against the wall to see if there is anything interesting about it.

Palmero watches where the swarm of salamanders ends up, making sure they are actually dispersed and not planning to attack again. Once satisfied, he enters the home behind the others.

Hanson lets the more aggressive members of the group pass him if they like, never one for dying first. He holds his torch out to see by, inspecting the excavations as they move deeper into the tunnel.

Sully moves in to check out the chair with the rope and torch, adding all 3 of the items to his inventory if nobody else objects. "Ye never know when ye'll need ta sit a spell down in the dungeon."

Dodging the salamanders, the group complete the search of the Hobbit house. Yarnold disappointed that more specific papers were not found. He takes out his notebook, scribbling lines and tutting occasionally. If there is nothing else of interest in the house the group will get along.

He can take the torch, which he strikes for light, proceeding into the tunnel behind Wenceslas & Xerxes.

Zygmund equips the rope, coiling it over his shoulder.

There is quite a number of figures heading into the tunnels, so we will just file along until further passages or caverns need exploring.

Bilberta, dwarven apothecarist

Bilberta silently joins the front vanguard, smiling. The tunnel seems to appeal to her.

Margit, Grave Digger

Margit joins the middle of the pack, seeking safety in numbers and begins the descent.

Sisyphus, Hunter

Cheerfully joins the group heading down into the tunnel, bow at the ready and grateful for the light carried by others.

Radahn, Conman

"Down in the hole we go, just like the others." He follows near the rear.

GM rolls dice. Those that picked up items in Odlo's home please add them to your character sheet.

Torchbearers: Yarnold, Baye, Hailey, Hanson, Hunwald

Their first encounter leaves the party unscathed. Palmero follows the path of the salamander swarm, satisified the danger to the party has passed. The danger to nearby hobbits' gardens may be another story.

Inside Odlo's modest dwelling, Yarnold's inspection of Odlo's documents finds no evidence that the missing hobbit is behind on his taxes. Legless inspects the shovel, finding nothing unusual. And with that, they enter the tunnel. As they proceed, Cotrgic and Hanson examine the walls for any information that a cursory glance might miss. An examination of the texture and pattern of the wall leads Cotgric to conclude the passageway was indeed dug out by dwarves, though likely many many years ago.

The tunnel continues down about 50', where it opens into a cavern. Initially, the party's torchlight faintly illuminates craggy rock rising up to the left and right, suggesting floorspace is about 50' wide. Darkness beyond your torchlight suggests this area is longer than it is wide. Looking up, the party sees several stalactites hanging from the ceiling of the cavern roughly 30' above. It's difficult to make out the ceiling.

The footsteps the party followed down the tunnel continue straight ahead into the cavern, winding around several 4-5' high stalagmites jutting up from the rock-strewn and dusty cavern floor. Just as Bobwhite and Hanson, bringing up the rear, reach the cavern, those in front see that one set of prints ends in a chaotic pattern. A small, shiny object reflects the torchlight from those in the front.

Suddenly, three creatures drop from the darkness above, landing on Sully, Rolf, and Sisyphus! The party is surprised! The creatures are man-sized spiders of a sickly-green hue. But these aren't your garden variety man-sized spiders. They have the heads of toads. Their bulbous eyes focus on their prey as they spin green gossamer, attempting to ensnare our three hapless adventurers!

CAI4, OGRE MAGE, and Marullus please give me agility saving throws for your PCs to avoid being ensnared. Higher is better, and the target is 16.

For other PCs, please refrain from actions until we have these throws. The outcome of these rolls may affect your actions.

As you contemplate next moves, know that there are some sharp rocks lying about that can be used as missile weapons [1d3 damage]. Those with shortbows start off with 4 arrows each.

Combat rules are located here and will be updated as needed.

How would you like to handle situations where a PC states they pick something up, then another PC states the same action afterwards?

Good question! For common items It's fine to handle it ooc. If/when the party encounters more fancy items, it's a good chance to roleplay those interactions...although communication ooc to explain character actions goes a long way from keeping PC conflict from turning into player conflict.

Sisyphus screams as the arachnid lunges towards him and faints before contact with the spider was even made.

That sucks.

Behind the GM screen:
The spiders had surprise, and luck was used to determine which PCs were targeted (poor Sisyphus has now been targeted twice)...the lower the luck, the more likely to be targeted.
The toad-spiders quickly encircle their prey. Sully, his elven navigator eyes trained on the starless ceiling, never sees them coming. Sisyphus the hunter, experiencing being on the prey side of the equation for once in his life, screams and faints as one drops next to him. Rolf the woodcutter moves his hand to his axe...but the spider makes a more difficult target than a tree. The spiders rear up, spinning a sickly green web from their abdomens as their legs quickly manipulate their targets to bundle them and their possessions in a tight, sticky web and lift them up with their two forelimbs.

With their blank, bulbous eyes they look menacingly at the party, baring their dagger teeth as they head towards the walls, intending to ascend with their new prey.

Spider-monstrosity:
toad-spider.jpg
toad-spider.jpg (176.95 KiB) Viewed 216 times
Some PCs are near one another given previous instructions (e.g. the vanguard) and Hanson and Bobwhite being near the back. You can call out specific spiders to attack, but this is a "fog of war" situation so I may alter the target to ensure a melee target is close enough.

Please roll initiative [1d20 with appropriate modifier] along with your actions. Sisyphus, Rolf, and Sully can make a strength or agility check (DC 18 given how tightly they're bound) to escape their web snares.

Good luck!

W, X, Y, Z.

Initiative: Wenceslas [1d20+1]=10+1=11 Xerxes [1d20-1]=13-1=12 Yarnold [1d20]=15 Zygmund [1d20-1]=9-1=8

Wenceslas, not sure if he is in any kind of melee range, but if so, hefts a mighty swing at the beasts.

Wenceslas: swings his mining pick [1d20]=13 [1d4]=4

Xerxes, backing up the dwarf, the grave digger swings his own tool of his trade, swatting uselessly at a Spider-toad.

Xerxes: swings his long shovel. [1d20+1]=4+1=5 [1d4+1]=4+1=5

Yarnold, raises his firebrand torch above his head. His concern not so much to illuminate the passage but to discourage any unseen critters still lurking from dropping upon his own head. "Stay close to me Zyggy" he insists, stabbing out at any critter within range.

Yarnold: Longsword stab [1d20-1]=20-1=19 [1d8-1]=4-1=3

Zygmund, is amazed by these strange arachnid abominations, wondering what foul spawn they are. He takes out his Black Grimoire, a leather bound tome of arcane scribblings and studies, turning the pages towards any bestiary section, his mind as much a web of intricate threads.

"Spider-toads, Spider-toads, do whatever a Spider-toad does. Can he swing from web? No he can't. He's a toad. Lookout, Spider-toad."

Zygmund: 14 Intelligence: using Black Grimoire [1d20]=4 He wants to check regarding the hybrid critter and any notes he might discern regarding webs in general (strength of threads, flammability), spider sting or bite poisons and toad skin toxins; if they are fatal, sleep inducing or paralysing?

He hopes any knowledge or snippet might prove invaluable.

Yarnold rolled a natural 20, scoring a critical hit! Feel free to roll a 1d4 (modified by -1 for Yarnold's luck) to see the effect. It's on page 21 of the starter rules here
