Inspired by Inferno's fantastic "Sauron Victorious" game (immensely engrossing to read - kudos to Inferno and their players for such excellence), I am gauging interest for a game set in Middle Earth. I would rather keep the game joyfully serious and close to Professor Tolkien's heroic and immersive writing.

Potential setting would be the First Age, with the game set somewhere in Beleriand and the great deeds that took place there. Alternatively, the Second Age, with a grim take on the Last Alliance's siege of Barad-dûr and the horrors of war even when besieging Sauron's very stronghold in a very long and tiresome siege. Númenor is also a possibility; the downfall of the Númenóreans is a superb tale by itself.

As for the system to be used, I am considering AD&D 1e, The One Ring (TOR - formerly published by Cubicle 7) and a rather new contender for heroic fantasy, The Hero's Journey 2e.

Links:
- The One Ring (TOR): https://www.amazon.com/One-Ring-Rolepla ... 0857442449
- The Hero's Journey 2e: https://www.drivethrurpg.com/product/29 ... nd-Edition
and its review/breakdown: https://rollingboxcars.com/2020/03/04/a ... nd-edition

All thoughts/ideas/suggestions are most welcome and would greatly aid a complete newbie to PbP DMing. If enough (?) interest is expressed, I will open a new thread in this sub-forum as to avoid cluttering this thread.

I would be interested, especially if it is 1e AD&D — although I enjoy other systems, I don’t want to spread myself too thin learning a new one. Totally understand if you choose a different rule system though.

sounds interesting

AD&D doesn't fit the magic of Tolkien, and i'm not familiar with the other systems

but it does sound interesting

I recently wrote an adventure module for Tiny Frontiers, which is a Traveller-like game. I understand that probably not many people have the Tiny Frontiers rules, but the resolution mechanic is really simple and character generation is simple enough that it could be done as a black box - you give me concept, I give you traits and explanations to match (there are no stats - characters are defined by their rule-altering traits). Anyway, I'd like to run the module for 3-4 players.

Respectfully, I suggest you take a look at https://rayotus.itch.io/taba. I've used these rules in three games now, two as a player and one as DM. They're free, light, and effective for storytelling.

Your Ancient General's Tomb game is the first time I have ever played the Tinyd6 ruleset and I love it. I do have Tiny Frontiers and I'm interested in this if you'll have me in another game.

Thank you very much, that's a nice suggestion. It certainly aids narrative play and is easy enough to learn, which are definitely a plus.

Also, while searching for a 1st ed. D&D conversion to Middle Earth specifics, I found this:
"Balrogs and Bagginses" - https://drive.google.com/file/d/1a52Wlo ... sp=sharing

It's much longer, but might warrant some attention.

Also, here was a TABA based game here not too long ago. I tried to help run it, but I haven't made the transition to very light rules yet. For group story-telling, they might be very good.

Hi Old Duergar,
Thanks for the kind words. If you want to use 1e, here are the House Rules I've adopted to approximate Middle Earth:

So far, it seems to be working.

Thanks for the heads up on 'Balrogs and Bagginses.' Will definitely check it out.

Good luck with your game.

For the Tiny Frontiers game, a few people seem interested so I put up a new thread here: viewtopic.php?f=21&t=10289.

I decided to give There And Back Again (TABA) a go for a Middle Earth game and I put up a new thread here: viewtopic.php?f=21&t=10298 . Thank you all for your advice and encouragement.

Wondering if there would be any interest in The Sprawl, cyberpunk NOT|Shadowrun PbtA.
Do people still use this thread or should I make a new one?

Nice, we can probably give it a try with 2-3 players, might go up to 4 depending.

In my experience, all that is required to play (not MC) a PbtA game is knowledge of the setting and a copy o fthe playbook/movelists. That said, I've never played the Sprawl.

I have a serious itch to run Beyond the Wall and Other Adventures, a D&D variant, but no current local group. I am looking for 3-5 players for a campaign with a setting and tone similar to Lloyd Alexander's Prydain Chronicles.
Lots of player input in shaping things, I want to try out the campaign world creation system from Further Afield.
Playing: At the Forest's Edge: Desmond Halfling Vagabond
The Northern Marches: Hengist Cleric of Baudh
