Patrol Leader

"Good is relative," she says, gesturing at the surrounding lands with her spear. "We once ruled a much larger domain than this, and the Ironskins brought peace and Law to this part of the world. Our influence is much diminished these past years, and we are beset on all sides by the forces of Chaos. But come, we will take you to the court of the Baron Xelazo. He will wish to speak with you, to hear news of the outside world."

Patrol Leader

"Pfah! Orcs are everywhere. They are like lice. We do what we can to exterminate them, and every week or so will ride patrol in the nearby woods to kill any we can find. But come, ride with us to the castle."

On the way to the stronghold Syoksya wheels back through the sky, coming to rest on Haaki's shoulder, nibbling on the witch's ear as she whispers to her: it is a place of stone and steel, the owl says, there is a stink of metal everywhere, perhaps more than most houses of Men, but I saw nothing out of place.

Up close the adventurers can see the skin of the soldiers glints with the dull shine of beaten iron; their hair slivers and springs of steel. The warriors move fluidly, but with strange, almost mechanical motions.

Gardo

Gardo will call over to Notai as they travel. Once she is near, he will lean down to speak to her in a low voice. "In your travels, have you heard of or seen this type of man?"

Notai

The cerves has, in fact. "They look to be siderenos, the iron-born. Men with metallic skin, they are great warriors, but somewhat slow of wit and cunning. They often serve as mercenaries in the north."

The Barony of Draea

The road leads up towards the castle, past the farms and fields of smallholders. All of them are similar in appearance to the soldiers in the patrol, but otherwise they seem to be perfectly normal; the animals in the fields look to be of the standard variety, the crops they grow seem to be no different from what is grown all over the Principalities.

The gates of the castle swing wide and the adventurers find themselves inside a well fortified structure, built along similar lines as Bastion. It seems as though almost every square inch is occupied by something; practice yards and stables, smithies and hovels. There's not a spare space to be found.

As far as the adventurers can tell all of the residents of the castle are of the same race as the soldiers; with skin and hair of iron. The patrol leader, who introduces herself as Escea, shows the party to a stable where they can put up their mounts, then leads them inside to an antechamber. "It you're allowed to stay the night it is likely you'll have to stay in the stables," she says, matter of factly. "We have little room here in the keep, and are not equipped for visitors. I'll go and let the Baron and his council know that you are here. How should I announce you?"

Feargus

Feargus calls over Kirra Lec and says, "I know your responsibilities weren't supposed to be for this land, but that's not to say they won't be in the future, especially if we find that Kimrid has fallen. How would you like to proceed here? I feel our party's goals would be different here than yours."

Kirra Lec

Lec fixes Feargus with a hard stare. "Well, our first goal should be to try and find out what they know about the surrounding lands. We should be halfway to Kimrid, or thereabouts, and I want to know if they have any contact with the monastery, or know of any major foes. We certainly want them to be on our side, because this looks to be an ideal waystation. They must be tough, if they've survived this long alone out here. As to long term . . . well, let's just say we'd like to remain on their good side for as long as possible."

Fourthmonth, Fifteenthday
The Barony of Draea
The Audience Chamber

After about an hour or so of waiting the adventurers are invited into the audience chamber and Escea bids them farewell. "Back to patrol," she says, and then strides off.

The audience chamber is decently-sized, perhaps thirty feet wide by sixty long, and features a high, arched ceiling with green glass windows set at the tops of the wall. A brace of iron-skinned guards are beside the door, and another pair at the far end of the hall, standing with three more of the siderenos; two men and a woman. All are dressed plainly, without armor, and all three wear swords at their sides.

The companions' escort raises her voice, metallic and flat as it echoes down the hall. "My lord Baron, may I present Kirra Lec, authorized representative of the Scarlet Prince, and her escort, the adventurers known as the 'Company of the Scarlet Warriors'. They have traveled far and seek refuge here for the night."

Kirra steps forward, accompanied by one of her guards carrying a heavy leather bag. The two of them bow low. "Milord," she says, "please forgive our ignorance. I was unaware that such a pleasant domain existed this close to our northern border; no doubt your ability to survive in such a harsh land is due to your strong guiding hand. We are leading an expedition north, to the monastery in Kimrid, and would welcome shelter for the night, and perhaps what news you have of the surrounding land. We also bring gifts: wine from the Prince's own vineyards, a music box carved from a single piece of jade, and a few other trinkets." Her man produces several bottles of wine, a carved green vessel shaped almost like an egg, two long hunting knives in matching sheaths, and a riding crop chased in mother-of-pearl inlays.

Feargus

"Milord, as the ambassador mentioned, we travel north to Kimrid. Do you have knowledge of this monastery and the lands between here and there along the old road? Likewise if you are looking to communicate with the monastery, we would be willing to escort your ambassador as well...for a suitable price."

Gardo

Hearing Feargus speaking, Gardo steps over and hits him in the arm and quickly speaks. "My apologies, Lord Baron," he begins as he makes a bow. "He meant no offense by forgetting to show his proper manners." He turns a little and gives Feargus a severe look then returns his attention forward.

"Allow me to also say that we should thank you. Both to you and your people for what we see here in an area thought as wild lands. Our group has come together with a purpose, to drive back the chaos that exists in our lands and threatens all borders. It is a boon to all to see that it is not just men that are standing against the chaos." He gestures to the group, lingering on Notai for a moment longer than the others and then to the siderenos in the room. "I, for one, say thank you for your presence here. I feel confident that the creatures of chaos will soon fear the sharpness of our weapons and the fierceness of our cause."

Bowing again, Gardo steps back. While still bowed, he tries to speak in a hushed tone. "Hey. Hey, Mariusz. Does he look okay or should I run now?"

The Baron accepts the gifts that Lec has offered without a word, examining the bottles of wine, pulling each knife from its sheath and testing the blades with an iron-bound thumb. The music box he sets on the table, giving it little more than a cursory glance. His expression hardens as Feargus speaks, but relaxes as Feargus takes over. "You are Men of actions, it seems, and not so much of the honeyed tongue. I like that. I know of the monastery of which you speak; we trade on occasion. The road north is dangerous, though, and the last trip we made was before the snows fell. We have no need for an escort, though, and can make our own way in the world. I will warn you, however, that a clan of giants -- brutish fellows, like ogres, but bigger and meaner -- have taken up residence alongside the road about a day's ride north of here. They are the most major threat that I know of; there are goblins and orcs, or course, but they are lessened since the the Orc King was slain."

One of the other Ironborn speaks up. "Our Baron is too modest. He slew the Orc King, the one that styled himself 'The Snake that Strikes', with his own blade, and caused their forces to rout."

The Baron makes a dismissive gesture with one hand. "It was my duty as a warrior, nothing more. The orcs and other riffraff have mostly retreated to the east, staying within the thicker woods, where they may move about without fear of the sunlight. We slay them when we encounter them on patrol, but do not have the manpower, nor the desire, to range much further in pursuit of them."

Newton bowed during the introduction, but then remained quiet, until now.

"Lord Baron, my name is Newton Longvillle, I am the companies scout. As such, I understand the advantage that familiarity in your surroundings provides when travelling. I realise that your troops are vital in keeping the hordes of chaos from your door, but might it be possible for you to spare someone who is familiar with the journey to Kimrid to travel with us? It would provide an opportunity for you to re-establish contact with the Monastery"

The Baron

The Baron fixes Newton with his gaze, eyes as dark and unreadable as his iron skin. "It's a road. You follow it north. If you are as capable a scout as you suggest I don't think you will have any issues. If you do get lost . . . well, maybe it's time to seek another line of employment."

Haaki, the Feather Witch

Haaki cackles. She can’t seem to help herself. She does it again after the Baron’s response.

Gardo

Gardo stifles a laugh as well, especially after hearing Haaki. Composing himself (barely), he looks to the Baron again. "Lord Baron, if we have information that you would like to hear, please let us know what it is. I would even say that we share with you knowledge of the land that we encountered on our travels here. Perhaps a small map exchange would be in order. Once this... business is done, I really desire to hear how you slew that so called 'Snake'. I had hoped that I would get a chance to find him and test my sword against him. Oh! We should tell you about the creature we recently slew back in.... whatever town that was. A real spawn of Chaos that bedeviled us."

The Baron

"Perhaps we will! I regret that we do not have any inns or taverns, such as you might be accustomed to; I believe a provision has been made for you to sleep the night in a stable. However! On a nightly basis we open up our mead-hall, the seat of my power, to all comers. You are welcome to join us tonight for dinner and drinks."
