Telemachus
"There are worlds beyond mere human comprehension, at least for most mortals. The Faerie Realm is but one of them. This could have no relevance to us, a conflict limited solely to the elves and fairies, or it could indicate a weakening of the barriers between our two realities. Only time will tell. In any event, nothing that concerns us this evening. Best back to sleep, perchance to dream. The door is our primary goal."
The following morning, instead of memorizing Sleep twice, Telemachus does but once, and also memorizes Shocking Grasp. Instead of memorizing Stinking Cloud, he memorizes Knock. Instead of Fireball, he memorizes Hold Person. Equipped thusly, he deems himself ready for close quarters combat.

As far as Gardo knows the constellation of the Circlet has naught to do with those of the chelydrane persuasion.VonAlric wrote:Gardo

"Well I guess only time will tell what the missing star means"
That evening he regales Nald with tales of his adventuring exploits and he hopes that he is ready for his first adventure, that and being good at holding a lantern.

Thirdmonth, Twentyfourthday
Junction
The adventurers rise and make their preparations. So far as they can see nothing is different in the world, so perhaps the missing star is not a portent at all.

The mage casts his spell. Arcane symbols briefly illuminate across the surface of the door and then vanish. Casfrea strides forward and pushes the door open with her blade. With the creak of ancient hinges it swings inward. A miasmic odor billows forth, and a stone staircase is revealed, five feet wide, descending into the earth and darkness.

Aldus sighs contentedly at the sight of the descending stairs. "Now this is the sort of work I'm better suited to than all this riding around the wilderness. Give me a chest with a lock and a spring-loaded poison needle, and I'll be happy."
Low on armor and better with ranged weapons, Aldus should be in the middle of the pack with the other squishy characters. He would rather keep Wulfka by his side, but she is happy to serve at either the front or back.

It's hard to explain puns to kleptomaniacs because they always take things literally.

Newton
Newton communes with nature in the morning and recovers his spells. He also checks that we have the royal jelly with us too before we leave. As they travel to the door he seems to be in good spirits, enjoying the wilderness without the tramping of the mercenaries scaring the creatures away.
Once the door is open he dismounts and makes sure that both his and Nald's horses are properly secured. He rummages around in his saddlebags and transfers a lantern and some flasks of oil to his backpack.
He address the young priest "Lad, we're going need you be be a lantern bearer on this trip. You've got oil and a lantern in your backpack, and I've got spare oil and torches if needed. But don't worry, we'll also need your spear at the ready just in case, and your healing will be important too."

Feargus
Standing outside the door, Feargus nods to Goshawk. "Not sure what we find in there. You spent much time in dark places like this? Ha...yeah I guess if you spend too much you end up dead. Gardo's going in first, you go behind him with that polearm of yours. Also bring your sword and shield if it gets down to close quarters. I'll take the rear guard."

The Door

One by one, their way lit by flickering torchlight, the adventurers descend into darkness. The air grows damp and chill as they descend, thirty steps, then forty, until finally, on the fifty-third step, it levels out and opens up onto a rectangular room. The ceilings are ten feet or so in height, arching to a point in the center. The room is twenty-five feet wide north to south and twenty feet east to west. The staircase enters the room in the northern corner of the eastern wall. From the base of the stairs Gardo can see a niche opening up in the same wall as the stairs, in the center of the wall. There is a statue of some sort in the niche. Opposite the niche, in the center of the western wall, a set of stairs descends before dead-ending into a door. In the western corner of the north wall another set of stairs descends until it, too, runs into a door. The smell of damp and mildew is almost overwhelming, the dust on the stairs is more of a film of mold on the floor than a coating of dry dust. Still, it doesn't look like the the layer of filth covering the floor has been disturbed, at least not recently.

Telemachus
Telemachus and Casfrea are toward the back of the marching order, just in front of Feargus.
Once the group has entered the room, Telemachus approaches the niche and examines the statue without touching it.

Re: IC
The statue is a carven representation of a man clad in robes, a spear in one hand and a shield in the other. At least, it looks to be a Man, but a closer inspection reveals distinctly porcine features. He's not sure exactly who the figure is supposed to represent, but does know that several Cycles ago, as the Skeldrene were collapsing to the south, a number of clans of beast-men known as mochyn dominated this area of Absalom. Every so often a strong leader would emerge to unite the tribes, but such alliances rarely lasted more than a generation, if that. Called boar-folk by the historians, the mochyn withdrew to the north as the Variagated Princedoms pushed westward and they came into contact with men.sulldawga wrote:Telemachus

Urging Nald on, Newton enters the room and takes up residence near the middle and stays alert while other with more appropriate skills check the room over.

Re: IC
Entering the room, the adventurers soon notice that the bottoms of the two stairwells are filled with a black, murky water. It's hard to judge exactly how deep it is, but it looks to be about two feet deep. The doors at the bottom of each stairwell are warped and swollen, and both look quite rotten.

Seeing the water at the bottom of the stairs, Gardo calls to Goshawk. "I hate stepping into water like that. Goshawk, how about testing out how deep it is and that there are no hidden surprises."

Aldus inspects the statue to see if it seems like a good candidate for hauling back to Junction. "I bet our sage friend would know some people who'd be interested in such a relic of ancient times!" He also checks it out for any manner of hidden mechanism. "In terms of architecture, it kinda seems like there should be another stairwell here, don't you think? Otherwise, the layout has an unnerving asymmetry."

It's quite possible that the statue would be of interest to a collector, but Aldus judges it likely weighs some five hundred pounds, at least.

Aldus finds no sign of a hidden door or mechanism within the statue. If there is meaning to the frightful asymmetry of the room he is as of yet unable to grasp it.
