Reap & Seed

Gwilt quickly assesses the interior of the 'Reap & Seed' as he passes through its open doors. His conclusion is that that most items are agricultural in nature.

A man and woman stand behind a counter along the left wall of the store. They smile as Gwilt enters. "Welcome to R&S," he says. "I help you find anything?" he asks.

Gwilt notices a table directly in front of this counter with a random assortment of weapons laid upon it, and much to his surprise and delight, he spots two large barrels on the floor next to the table of weapons with the word "arrows" painted across the front of each. He approaches and can tell the barrows are well-stocked. The man sizes up Gwilt and notices him eyeing the barrels of arrows. "A hunter?" he asks.

Gwillt nods, "Ayup. I hunt things, that's for sure." He peaks at the arrows, pulling some out to test for straightness and quality.

"Diminished my supply 'hunting' snarks the last few days; thought I'd stock up, if'n ya don't mind. What's yer cost on a score, then?"

Gwilt pulls an arrow out of the first barrel, inspecting the quality of its tip, shaft and flight; finding it to be of surprisingly good quality. "Harold's the name," the man starts when he notices you inspecting the barrel of flight arrows. "I trust you find them of decent quality?" he asks, almost rhetorically as he's clearly very proud of his stock of arrows and suspects no less than a positive response. "Is our most popular item, as lots of people use 'em for hunting around here. Protectin' their herds, and what have ya." He catches himself in mid-ramble. "Oh, right, the price. We sell 'em by the dozen. Five silver pieces. I'm 'fraid I'd have to defer to my wife to price out a score've them, though."

"Assumin' you like 'em, and find the price agreeable, how many of 'em can I get for ya? And what else can I interest you in?" he asks.

Gwillt raises an eyebrow at the mention of the cost, but continues sighting down a fourth arrow randomly pulled from the barrel.

Finally, he nods, "Aye, they're not bad. But, five silvers a dozen for hunting arrows is... a bit..." he closely examines the head and checks the edge for sharpness by scraping it across his fingernail, "hmmm..." he ends without putting actual words to his thoughts.

He stares at the nearest barrel a moment, as if thinking something over in his head. Then he begins pulling arrows out of it, giving them a cursory look for quality before placing them on the counter. He counts out 3 dozen arrows, neatly piled into 3 piles of 12 arrows each. Then, for good measure, he pulls out and creates 2 more stacks of 12.

"Let's talk bulk, then, shall we?" He pulls out the 8 silver and 20 of the coppers from the goblin treasure, then adds another 10 silver from his own, laying them all out on the counter. Then he pulls out the 4 flight arrow heads he'd recovered previously and sets them next to the coins.

"18 and 20 coin and the 4 good flight points for 5 dozen arrows; that's 4 silver a dozen, with something extra thrown in. Sounds fair to me; how's that sound to you?"

He looks up at the shopkeeper to gauge his reaction.

"You drive a hard bargain, mister, but it sounds fair to me. Lemme just run it past my wife--" he stops. "Nah, tell you what," he says, leaning close. "Let's just call it a deal." he says, nodding his head in his wife's direction. He doesn't even bothering to inspect the arrow heads offered as a perk to the deal.

"So, what else can I interest you in? I don't reckon you to be a farmer, but perhaps I could interest you in one of our fine pelts over here," he says, motioning to a rack on far side of the store.

Gwillt shrugs as he pulls one of his large sacks out of his pack and loads the arrows into it.

"I'm generally more interested in selling pelts," he says as he walks towards the pile of fur. "Unfortunately, the only things I've come across lately are wormy, lice-ridden worgs. Don't know of any demand for worg pelts around here, do you? Unfortunate, really, since I wasted several arrows on them in the process..."

Once near them, he examines the pelts for quality...

OOC: Was buying arrows for Shanny (12) and Alordan (24), as well, in case something happened and we had to bug out of town in a hurry, and in case anyone was wondering and is reading this thread. Figured it was OK to use the party coin taken to-date for that since it wasn't that much to begin with and, thus far, all arrows spent have been for the good of the party.

I'll update my inventory and disperse arrows when the party gets back together.

In case it has to be mentioned, Gwillt maintains a level of awareness as he walks through the store. After the incident in the inn, he isn't letting his guard down. But he wants to appear casual and normal, at least until he can finish any transactions he wants to make.

"By the way...", Gwillt adds as he looks over the furs, "you wouldn't happen to have any lances or... Umm... poles suitable for turning into lances, would you? My friend tried using his lance as a vaulting tool, as it were, and it got snapped in half. In his defense," he adds, hastily,"I do not believe vaulting was his intent! He's just a bit wet behind the ears, if you get my meaning."

"Worgs, you say? Ain't seem many of them 'round here." Harold says. "Pelts ain't worth the effort if you ask me, but good of you to put an end to 'em."

He glances over at the weapons table. "Nah, sorry, nothin' like a lance. Not even a spear. Not sure you'll find somethin' like that 'round here. Sorry, mate."

"Yeah... Didn't REALLY expect you to, but... I thought I'd ask," Gwillt replies.

"So how is the work around here? Always looking to make a bit of coin, if you know what I mean. Any marauding orcs or snarks causing trouble for the town? Or..." He shrugs. "You know, whatever."

He makes his way to the long knives and examines them closely as he chats about work.

"'fraid you won't find much opportunity for work here in O'Hare. Most people ain't the trustin' sort. Especially lately."

A local family enters the shop. "You'll have to 'cuse me, " he says. "Gotta keep an eye on the little one; me swear the little devil has stolen from me on more than one occasion." he says as he rushes over to greet his new customers.

Does it appear the shopkeeper is no longer paying any attention to Gwillt at all? Or just occupied for a moment with the other customers?

If he's dismissed Gwillt, then he'll take his leave. If he just appears to be busy for a moment, then Gwillt will hang about a while longer, looking at whatever adventuring gear he might find available...

You suspect the shop keeper will be paying undivided attention to this newest batch of customers. How long they'll remain is unknown? The wife is also in the shop, and she glances at you occasionally, but makes no effort to engage with you.

"Ma'am," Gwillt says, approaching the shopkeeper's wife. "Your husband is a shrewd shop keeper,"he says, jerking his head back in the direction of her husband.

"But he's fair. And I don't come across that very often anymore." He pauses before continuing, "We were talking about work opportunities in the area when that family came in... he mentioned a change for the worse around here lately." He looks pointedly at some of the empty shelf spaces and adds, "I also notice your store seems to be a bit low on some supplies, as well. I bet it's hard to find good suppliers these days, especially with such an unfriendly air about the town."

He stops and makes a point of looking around to make sure nobody else is listening, "Look... you folk seem like just and fair people. I hate to see your business affected by the goings on of others. I can help you."

"Ma'am," Gwillt says, approaching the shopkeeper's wife. "Your husband is a shrewd shop keeper," he says, jerking his head back in the direction of her husband. The wife, still silent, appears nervous as you approach, even taking a step back. Behind her is a curtain providing a rudimentary cover into a room behind the counter, which she seems to want to retreat into.... "But he's fair. And I don't come across that very often anymore." He pauses before continuing. "M-m-my husband handles all of that." she finally manages to spit out, retreating another step.... "We were talking about work opportunities in the area when that family came in... he mentioned a change for the worse around here lately." Another retreated step; her back is to the curtain now.

---

It becomes evident that the shopkeepers wife is well aware of the changes for the worse, and despite his cordial demeanor, she is fearful of Gwilt. Your offer to become a supplier falls on deaf ears.

Gwilt shrugs, "The gods help those who help themselves, ma'am," he calls out as he grabs his sack of arrows and heads towards the door.

He gives the shopkeeper one last look to see if he might be available to talk before leaving, frustrated at his inability to get information.

Damnit! I would have sworn I responded to this earlier this afternoon, but I must have only been in 'preview' mode and closed my browser tab.

Anyway....

Gwilt shrugs, "The gods help those who help themselves, ma'am," he calls out as he grabs his sack of arrows and heads towards the door. He casts an unmet glance at the shopkeeper who's still very intently following around the family of customers, particularly their young son.

Frustrated at his inability to get information, Gwilt exits the store.

To where?

Once outside, Gwillt tries to get his bearings and figure out where the other inn is. But before he goes anywhere, he'll stand around a bit and see if the others leave the first inn any time soon...
