Library Look-around. Sam & Hrothgar investigation #1
Main Library: 1st Floor
Records Archive
August 24th, 2018 1pm
The transit line takes Sam around a bit of the long way around to the Main Library on Roger's Ave not too far from the Firehouse and across from a large city park.
Your phone pings to and when you open it you realize that you are near part of the team that is investigating the cemetery.
The city library is very large and modern build, borrowing from the postmodern ardeco styles. Once inside it is easy enough to find the old records archive. It is very near the main desk and to the back of the library. So with some negotiating the librarian lets you in with the cat, apparently sympathetic, but you cannot let him out of the carrier under any circumstances.
Actions?

Sam looks around the library for any people he can try to convince to help him search through old papers for references to the Jack Belt accident - obituary, incident report, police report, or other news article referencing Jack Belt to understand who he was.
Excuse me...could I trouble you for some of your time?
Sam doesn't know how well it would go over to ask about devil worshippers of strangers so he is going to focus on looking for references to strange gatherings, graffiti, concerned parents, and concerned religious groups in articles and editorials himself.
To Hrothgar You have to stay in there buddy.
The cat meows a reply - but only because it is starting to get hungry and had a moment of Sam's direct attention.

A lady not much different in age than yourself smiles and offers to help
She takes him to the corner of the archive where there is a computer database.
We have the search engine here and it will bring up a lot of what we have scanned into the computers. It will also tell you where to find old copies of newspapers located over here... and some others are on microfiche over here. And of course, books also have bound copies of certain papers and records as well.
Lets just see how well this goes. I am not putting a degree on this roll, I just want to see what you are able to find with a straight brains roll.

Sam feels daunted by the quantity of information the friendly lady shows him and begins to start his research into the archives.

Times Record dated July 6th 1989.
There is an over whelming amount of information here. It seems like it will take some time to find specifics. Once her keys in: Jack Belt though, he does find an article mentioning him:
Police have released the name of the man who died after being involved in a car accident two days ago as Jack Belt, 25 of Fort Smith. Belt was driving at high speeds when he ran a red light and was hit by a semi-truck on the corner of Midland and Division Avenues. The driver of the truck was uninjured, but unavailable for an interview. Police say drugs and alcohol were involved.

Sam checks the time to see if he will be able to make it to the Mormon church. Then takes a moment to send the team a text - intending to text the group but only sends it to Roy again - I have a lot information here - is anyone any good at researching archival records?

There indefinitely something aggravating Hrothgar all of a sudden. As if on cue, Sam's phone begins to ping as the passive PKE begins to signal activity.

Sam leans in close to the face plate of Hrothgars carrier sensing the agitation, What is it Hrothgar? and starts to unclasp the carrier to reach in and provide some comfort to the distressed cat.

You just barely manage to keep the cat in the carrier!
The ruckus certainly draws several looks and murmurs...

Sam is going to make sure the carrier door is closed securely, try to determine if the cat is focusing its agitation in any particular direction, and sheepishly hide from the looks and murmurs behind a table, Sorry...sorry. said quietly and mostly to himself.
Sam then will try to send a message to the team about the PKE spike thinking it is a malfunctioning phone, my phone keeps making these chirping sounds - is something wrong with it? - he isn't sure who receives the message.

The carrier is fine and the readings you saw momentarily on your phone have stopped.
You can roll moderate brains to try to decipher them.
Other than that most of the people in the library go back to their own business with only a few cursory looks. Thankfully none of the library staff seem to have noticed yet. As he looked around, he does notice there is a tall stack of books that was not there before.

Sam leaves Hrothgar where he is and slowly approaches the stack of books with his phone out intending to record a video of the book titles.

The ghost dice really doesn't like you
Sam just can't seem to find the readings on his phone after accidentally dismissing the notification.
He manages to open the camera on the phone and snap some shots of the book titles.

Sam rips a page out of his notebook as cleanly as he can and writes in large evenly spaced letters, RESERVED on a second line he writes the name, Roy O'Dowd and includes Roy's phone number and places it on top of the stack of books.
Sam grabs Hrothgar and heads out of the library for a bus line to the Mormon church to follow up on the other recommendation - the waitress mother's genealogical study.

Sam is able to make it out and find a nearby bench across the street at the park to wait for another bus. after about 20mins like clockwork, there is another bus that comes and picks him up. Turns out it is even on the proper route to get to the church he inquires about. in about half an hour he is standing in front of the Mormon church. There is a sign pointing to a large annex building labeled "Records".
Once inside, he is in a dimly lit large room full of computers and micro-reel machines not too unlike what he saw in the library. There are a few people scattered about looking through records and taking their notes.
Actions?

Sam takes note of the people in the room and clears his throat, Ahem... then a little louder, Ahem...would anyone be so kind as to help me look up some information on some names?
Hrothgar has been in this cage for far longer than he would ever care to be and is very hungry - the cheese was just not enough - and is making some louder, pleading meowing sounds.
Does anyone happen to have any fish with them? This cat is getting hotter under the collar than a fur coat on a summer day.

You need to roll a hard Cool for that one. These folks are pretty engrossed in their own work and don't seem to appreciate the cat or the noise it is making.

Hard Cool @ Mormon Records [2d6] = 7 + 3BP [3d6] = 14 + Ghost [1d6] = 6
Sam gives a small cough at the end of his request and looks from face to face at their reactions.
