Session 2: Quarantine Zone

Quarantine Zone
With Watchman Locks leading the way, the group is able to successfully sneak into the quarantined 'Dock Ward'; entering from the far north side. He quickly ducks into a side alley, where he produces a small map on rolled parchment once everyone has followed and gathered around him.

He unrolls it for everyone to view:

The tiefling detective finally breaks his silence. "We'll enter here," he says, pointing at 'Cloak Lane' on the top right of the map. "Captain Brisby lives here --" he says, pointing to a shabby tenement building a few houses in. "It's not far, so everyone keep up."

Once everyone has indicated their readiness, the junior detective sets the plan into motion and slinks around the corner and onto 'Cloak Lane.' Many destitute and sick residents huddle along the street, with the occasional rodent skittering underfoot. Locks moves without pause, ignoring any pleas from struggling locals, until he reaches the side of the building he indicated previous.

He briefly ducks off the main road and into an alley that runs alongside the building. With everyone lined up, and after confirming everyone has their protective flowers in place, he readies the group for action. "This way. Quickly."

With that, he darts back in front of the building and raps quietly on the front door.

There's no answer.

Without pause, Locks puts his shoulder into the door and it springs open. He stands at the entrance of the now open door and waves everyone in.

"Quickly now. Inside.

"Let's hurry!"

Sandro

The tortle monk will dive through the open door, doing a somersault before regaining his feet, all in one fluid movement, before leaning casually against a wall or bookcase and appearing bored.

Zeb will also step through the entranceway and step opposite side of the sorcerer. (He went left - step through to the right or vice versa)

His intent is to cover his party members if need be.

Garl steps in quickly but carefully looking for cover. If no immediate danger, he'll examine the room for exits or clues from his position before moving further in.

Perception DC [1d20] = 4

OOC: should we be adding bonuses in from our sheet on these skills? My passive wisdom perception is actually higher then this roll if that matters.

Keeping her flowers directly under her huge nose as the group hurries along, the priestess tries not to breath in too deeply.

She is somewhat taken aback by the speed of the new detective team, not sure if she should be trying to disguise her size and look, as is sometimes her way.

Oh well, she thinks to herself, in for a penny and all that.....

She ducks into the building with the others, keeping a sharp eye out for anything......off, as she makes her entry.

Captain Brisby's Apartment
With great skill, Sandro, the tortle monk, dives through the open door, doing a somersault... which is interrupted when his shell strikes an unexpected object lying in the middle of floor.

A dead body.
Captain Brisby.png
Captain Brisby.png (98.83 KiB) Viewed 2193 times
A dead male body, lying face down in a pool of blood. An initial assessment of the body shows it to be adorned in breeches and a purple waistcoat, now tainted with many different areas now coated in a deep crimson color. Around his waist, the man wore a sash and a worn leather belt; and a pair of knee-high leather boots cover his feet. A tri-cornered hat, garnished with exotic bird feathers, lies a short distance from his head.

The half turtle, in another impressive feat, quickly bounds to a standing position and notes that his shell is now decorated with patches of blood along its rim.

The body itself is found in a small and sparsely furnished apartment, with little more than a bed and a few chairs on the wooden panel floor. A clothes line drapes from one corner to the barred window, and a walls house a few shelves with random household objects:
Captain Brisby's Apartment (Resized).jpg

An open cutout to the left appears to lead into a very cluttered kitchen, dominated with copper cookware and wooden utensils. A table with multiple place settings stands in the far side of the kitchen, beneath a window leading outside to what would be the rear of the apartment:
Captain Brisby's Kitchen (Resized).jpg
Captain Brisby's Kitchen (Resized).jpg (295.72 KiB) Viewed 2193 times

Numerous bloody trails, left by tiny clawed feet, are easily noticed leading from the body into this main room and into the adjoining kitchen area. From there, they appear to have scampered up a staggered pile of crates and boxes along the far wall and out through a broken section in the lower left hand corner of the kitchen window.

The rest of the group follow in behind Sandro with more caution, and position themselves inside what appears to be a joint living room/bedroom area. Garl makes sure to her flowers directly under her huge nose and tries not to breath in too deeply.

Watchman Locks enters last, closing the forced open door behind him. "Next time, when I use the word 'quickly' or 'hurry' in a directive, assume that means to proceed with a modicum of caution," he says, glaring at Sandro. "Let's hope no evidence has been destroyed," he says, scowling.

Yes, I'm aware that the hand image would be from a body lying on its back, but searching for appropriate images for what I was going for was a real challenge, and that was the best I could do.

Asmundr

Asmundr carefully studies the rooms for clues and hints.

Initially he will focus on the body and area around it. Cause of death? Murder weapon? What were the creatures that left the footprints? What were they doing? Signs of a struggle? Any documents or valuables on the victim? Presumably this is our Captain Brisby, but are we sure? "Locks, can you confirm this is Capatain Brisby?"

Next he moves to follow the tracks until they exit the apartment. Any signs along the way? Side trips? Shape/size change? Evidence they were carrying anything? Can I tell were they went by looking through the window? Does it look like he can see where they came out outside? If so he may choose to investigate outside as well.

Then Asmunder will search for any evidence of forced entry into the apartment. Windows that have recent signs of being open? "Does anyone remember, was the door locked?"

Next he moves to searching for anything that will help with stopping the rat pox. Anything unusual laying around that might be used in a cure or to stop the spread? Any documents?

"I suspect that whatever is behind this is also behind the rat pox, and perhaps we are dealing with some rat like creature."
Investigation [1d20+4] = 18+4 = 22

Perception [1d20+2] = 13+2 = 15

Please check to make sure I have the bonuses right, new to 5E.

The hulking Louchi is almost amused by the antics of Sandro, right up until he is scolded for his efforts.

She wants to see if there is anything she can do to help the dead captain, if that is really who this man is, but she doesn't risk getting too close to the body unless Locks gives her the nod first.

She begins poking around the room as well, initially noticing the way the framed pictures on the wall above the bed have clearly been tampered with. She looks all around the bed, under the sheets, and under the bed itself for any clues before concentrating on the wall behind the paintings.

If she finds nothing of interest there, she starts going through any drawers or shelves that might be hiding valuable clues or information.

(Please let me know if any of these actions require a roll, or just go ahead and make them. I don't want to be filling posts with unnecessary rolls if you don't need or want them in there. Thanks!)

The monk wanders over to the kitchen and begins looking at the table and the cookware, poking around in any drawers and cabinets. Hey, Locks Dude, did the captain live alone? This place looks too small to have others living here with him, but the table is set for multiple people. Maybe he had company.

Azalea takes a whiff of the flower thinking to herself, “This is nowhere as deadly as my namesake.” She surveys the dead body and notes that if this is the Captain then the only hope is to find something in writing regarding the cure. She knows that if it were her she would have taken certain precautions to safeguard this information and to hide it in a secret location. She moves around the body and starts looking for secret hiding places in the floorboards, furniture, ect.

Garl peers at the body and can't get too excited about that seeing another dead one - he's seen plenty of those from the war. How he died, that may be another story, as he notices the tracks. More rats? Could that actually kill a man? Maybe he wasn't awake at the time?

He does take note, as it is indeed something he isn't much used to, of the apparent book next to the bed for any possible clues to highlight. He'll piece together anything he could actually decipher and highlight the rest to the group. If that proves to be nothing he'll examine the chest at the bottom of the bed.

Captain Brisby's Apartment
"Locks, can you confirm this is Capatain Brisby?" Asmundr asks, which prompts the Watchman to approach and kneel at the side of the face down body. The head of the deceased man lies with his left side of his face against the floor, and the right side of his face partially covered by long strands of dirty blonde knotted hair. With a gloved hand, Locks brushes the hair away from the man's face and bows his head. After rising to his feet, Locks nods affirmatively, confirming that the man rumored to have solved the mystery of the rat pox can no longer share what he knows.

"Let's search the rooms," he says. "And please be careful to not destroy anything that could be evidence. Report any findings to me."

With that, the Watchman pulls out a few sheets of folded paper and an ink pen and begins scratching out notes, detailing the state of the room and preparing to document everything shared with him.

While not in Waterdeep, Asmundr's background and training in a city watch has conditioned him to be thorough in situations like this. Careful to avoid stepping in the pool of blood, Asmundr quickly moves to the body, where he notes that the Captain's body is covered in tiny bite and claw marks. Between these bite and claw marks, and the tiny footprints that leave where the body lies and into the kitchen, it appears as if Brisby was overcome by rodents -- a lot of them. With so many injuries covering his body, it's difficult to say for certain whether there are defensive wounds, but there does not appear to have been a significant struggle. The stench of death is powerful near the body, but it is not enough to mask the strong odor of alcohol... which would explain the empty bottle lying a few feet away from Brisby's outstretched hand. A small pool of liquid has formed under the open mouth of this bottle.

Continuing his search of the Captain and his possessions, the sorcerer begins to work top-down.

The first interesting item Asmundr discovers is a small pouch which dangles from the Captain's belt. Inside this pouch are 18 coins -- 11 copper and 7 silver -- plus a key which, if tested, fits the lock on the front door.

The only other item of note isn't discovered until the sorcerer reaches the Captain's boots, where his keen eye and attention to detail catches a glipse of a tiny piece of parchment hidden in the captain’s left sock:
Note.jpg
Note.jpg (9.41 KiB) Viewed 2151 times

Louchi joins Asmundr near the fallen body, and without getting too close, looks to see if there's anything she or her divine magic can do to revive the Captain. Carefully inspecting the exposed hand of the deceased shows the lower half of the hand, except where the hand actually makes contact with the floor, is a much darker shade. The firbolg's medical training informs her that lividity has definitey set in, which suggests that the Captain has been dead for at least six hours, and any chance for revival is long past.

Shaking her head, the mini-giant rises to her feet and moves to the Captain's sleeping area. Above the bed are a pair of pictures which appear to have been disrupted. A closer look reveals that the two prints are actually meant to look as they appear -- two rectangle frames, one lying at an angle on top of the other, intentionally fastened into this angled shape. Both framed images appear to be sketches of the captain with a young girl with red hair and freckles.

Azalea joins Louchi in the sleeping quarter and quickly glances at the unmade bed. The mattress is old, and dirty, and the bed does not appear to be well-kept, but nothing extraordinary stands out about it. Men can be dirty, after all. Using her dagger, she shifts the pillows and sheets, releasing a small billow of dust or dirt, but neither turns up anything.

Under the bed, near its foot, wedged between two of the wooden beams supporting the mattress, the rogue spots what appears to be a rolled up sheet of paper. After carefully removing it, the elf unrolls it and discovers an advert or newsletter of some kind:
Newspaper.png
Newspaper.png (576.57 KiB) Viewed 2151 times

Garl, question how rats could kill a man, wonders if maybe the Captain wasn't awake at the time of the attack. Or, glancing at the empty bottle nearby, the ranger comes to the assumption that Brisy was just passed out drunk at the time. While reading is not necessarily his strength, the half-orc makes his way to the chair near the window, with an open book and a what looks like a pottery dish filling the seat.

The bottom of the dish is ink stained and filled with water; an ink pen rests point down in it.

The book is open to a pair of journal entries, apparently documenting Captain Brisby's many adventures at sea. Flipping through the book, it's page after page of the same thing.
Journal.jpg
Journal.jpg (269.35 KiB) Viewed 2151 times
Giving up on trying to make sense of the nautical noties, the ranger moves to the small chest at the foot of the bed, which is unlocked... and releases a funk when opened. The chest, apparently serving as a laundry basket, is stuffed with clothes, most of them heavily stained and none appear to be clean.

Sandro is the first to wander into the kitchen. "Hey, Locks Dude, did the captain live alone? This place looks too small to have others living here with him, but the table is set for multiple people. Maybe he had company?" The Watchman shares that he believes the Captain had a daughter, but isn't aware of any other family members. "My guess is, his crewmates probably spent a fair amount of time here."

The kitchen -- including the table, cookware, untencils, dishes, and stove -- all appear to be normal items. In the far corner of the kitchen, however, Sandro discovers a wooden box with a hinged door... that overwhelmingly smells of cheese. Opening the box confirms the source of the smell as it is full of cheese! Small chunks of more varieties of cheese that can easily be counted. Also inside the box is a small chest containing a carton of crackers.
Icebox.jpg
Icebox.jpg (173 KiB) Viewed 2151 times

Some of the many bloody rodent tracks which lead from the body here to the kitchen deviate from the main trail to this icebox, but eventually work their way out of the kitchen through a fist-sized crack the window.

Asmundr

"It does kind of look like the mice or rates killed him, maybe with the aid of him being passed out. I suppose it is possible the drink was poisoned and the rats did their work after. Either way they were here for something. I found this scrap of paper, clearly hidden in his sock. HH908 An address maybe? Or possibly code for something. Are there any streets or districts that abbreviate HH? Azzalea, can I see that flyer? Look HH could be Harbor Holdings, looks like it might be an account or a box at the bank maybe? I wonder why the doctor is circled, do you think he might know something?"

Investigation [1d20+4] = 12+4 = 16 [1d20+4] = 9+4 = 13 using Inspiration

Perception [1d20+2] = 6+2 = 8

I seem to have decided that Asmundr rambles as a way of working through problems.

This is great.

You guys should definitely feel free to openly discuss your findings, and go back-and-forth with ideas, or suggestions for next steps, etc...

Yes, I agree that the bank might hold more clues. This looks like a lockbox number. Do you still have that key? Maybe that is for the bank lockbox? Oh, it’s for the front door? Is the circle around the Doctors printed on or could he have made it as to say it’s someone we should talk to? Also, maybe we should each take some of that cheese. Maybe it can be use to distract the rat hoards at some point?

Azalea decides to look around further for another key that could be used for a bank lockbox or a combination code.

Louchi looks at all the clues the others have found, agreeing with most of the assumptions offered so far. She is surprised by the quick thinking and great ideas from Asmundr, glad to have the sorcerer along on this mission. “All of that sounds reasonable to me. Seeking out this mysterious redhead daughter might be prudent as well. Anyone know about poison? Maybe we should check out what’s in that bottle?”

She continues on with her search, checking all of the top shelves and other high places that others might not be able to easily see. She moves into the kitchen area next, doing the same thing in there.

Perception Check [1d20+3] = 6+3 = 9

Following the rat tracks, she tries to determine if the direction they fled away from the window outside can be determined.

“Cheese and crackers, eh? All we need now is some sausage and beer and we got ourselves the makings of a nice snack.”

She will offer to carry the cheese box along with her unless someone disagrees.

Ho, ho-Sausages and beer? Sounds good to me! I think we should try the bank first, see if we can get a peek inside that box, if the numbers mean what we think. Then after that maybe check out the doc. Sound like a decent plan, dudes and dudette?
