I've added Molly Maguire. I rolled stats with the 4d6 drop one system. I'll need some hand-holding for the crunchy parts of character creation, since I don't play or own any 5e material.

Hi! Thanks for allowing me to join you.

Will characters be rolled up using 4d6 drop the lowest?

Yes, 4d6, drop lowest ~ I'll add that to my new rules/guides post :)

Character Sheet in Progress:

Here's a link to a 5e spreadsheet that is a much more thorough record of the character than the US sheet.

And here's the description of the Artificer class.

Mister-Kent, do you think a warlock would work within this setting? If not, that's fine and I will go with a Sorcerer instead.

here is one I did earlier: Ambergris, a hook handed whaler who has gone partially mad (become a warlock) since a 'Jonah-type' experience with a Cthulhu inspired Great Old One of the Deep.

I LOVE Abstentious and Ambergris! A great pulpy cast, have we

Ybn: Certainly either a warlock or sorcerer would work

With Ambergis already created I am going to switch gears. Any problem with a Tabaxi (from Volo's Guide to Monsters) cleric?

I've left one of Abstentious Device's languages open until I have a better sense of what would make sense for this campaign world. I'm open to any suggestions.

The write-up for Artificers suggests that each one should have a rival. Shall I invent Abbie's rival, or should I leave that up to the DM?

I'm intrigued by the use of the Renown mechanic. I remember of rich world of guilds and organizations in the last campaign I was in with Mr. Kent!

YBN: A tabaxi cleric sounds really cool and pulpy! (And I was actually just reminiscing about the Disney's Tarzan cartoon, where he fought Queen La and the Leopardmen - whilst on my current Disney animation binge)

Pulpatoon: Yes, you can create your Artificer's rival. I love that feature of the class, it can really be a fun thing for both the player AND Dm.

I'm sorry about being quiet these past two days. It's likely to continue for two more days, then I'll have more time on the 26th. In the meantime I am reading everything for a few minutes before I go to sleep.

Here's a look at what I have so far.

Even if your character's not 100% done, if you find free time everyone's free to post in the "Part Zero" thread. Typical tavern gathering, I know, but you all know each other somehow. Also, if you've chosen your bonds/flaws/etc from your Backgrounds, please write those in the Notes section of your character sheet.

Here's a copy of what I have so far. I've included a description and brief history. Essentially, he spent the last few years in what passes for the army. Does anyone want to link backgrounds in some way?

Okay, so let's play with backgrounds! How does this sound?

Payterish's squadron came across a goblin enclave that had been devastated by a fungal blight. One of the blast-pike junior officers decided on a whim to adopt a goblin founding as the squad mascot. The junior officer's fickle attentions did not last much past dumping the naked, filthy thing upon his aide de camp. But some of the soldiers, including Payterish, showed an interest.

Payterish knew that life as a mascot held few opportunities for improvement or dignity, and the next time his squad stopped over in Urbistadt, he asked a young woman he knew from his younger days, Molly Maguire, if she could find a place for him. Molly had, just the night before, while doing a little second-story reconnaissance, stumbled across a Master of the contraptionist's guild in an extremely compromising position. She decided to revisit the contraptionist and inform him that the price of her discretion was that he take on an apprentice.

The contraptionist master, Zylender Device, discarded the squadron's name for their former mascot ("Dungbutt") and christened the goblin "Abstentious" in the hopes that the little beast would one day learn to resist acting on its every impulse.

It was during his apprenticeship that Abstentious Device developed a bitter rivalry with Gileo Ostentata.

Gileo Ostentata
High Elf Artificer, male, Lawful Priggish
Gileo is a fine, upstanding Elf of semi-noble pedigree. He is sophisticated, magnanimous, and well-groomed. And he has dedicated years of his long life to the mathematical study of ballistics and its application to engineering. He entered into his apprenticeship with every expectation of being the Master's star pupil. But despite every resource and advantage, he finds himself in constant competition for Master Device's attention with a goblin child who usually does his work one-handed because the other one is knuckle-deep up a nostril. Gileo honestly tries to feel sympathy for the wretched creature, but his attempts at composure are usually ruined by Abstentious setting fire to something, or—even worse—succeeding at a problem that has confounded Gileo. In his quietest moments of self-reflection, Gileo has finally admitted to himself that he hates that unworthy green pissant, and would love nothing more than to see his rival humiliated before the entire Guild.

Meanwhile, Abstentious has learned the trappings of civilization. He dresses in mostly clean clothes, eats with cutlery, and covers when he sneezes. Still, homesickness for the loving squalor of a goblin-den will settle upon him.

Abstentious Device, in soliloquy:
Whenever I find myself growing grim about the mouth; whenever it is a damp, drizzly November in my soul; whenever I find myself involuntarily pausing before coffin warehouses, and bringing up the rear of every funeral I meet; and especially whenever my hypos get such an upper hand of me, that it requires a strong moral principle to prevent me from deliberately stepping into the street, and methodically knocking people’s hats off—then, I account it high time to find the muddiest, grubbiest, most thoroughly insalubrious gutter in this city, and heave myself in. There, one can truly relax, with the squelch of honest mud beneath and the glittering of stars above. There is no finer bedchamber in all creation.
Needless to say, this is where he made Ambergris' acquaintance.

Hope everyone has/had a great New Year's celebration. I'm going to volunteer at our town's German-heritage New Year's celebration (ball drop is 6pm, since we do it on German time), and I will have some posts for the thread after I get home :D
