CHAPTER 15: A New Dawn

The Jag Oru Coast 56D/82 (Morning)
You escaped the underground water control complex, avoided the pursuit of Honfezgalapad’s Gorilla Legions and found your way to the west coast of the Gam’A Zone. There, you happened upon a group of Karub Pirates and bartered for passage to their next destination.

“We make haste for Port Vorak on the shores of the Jag Oru Coast, west across the Exica Sea. You’ll have to make you way from there.”
The three-week sea journey was occasioned by storms, ocean color blooms and sea monsters that were easily managed by the motley crew of the armed Pirate Galley. You lent assistance when necessary and gained the respect of a few crew members.

When the pirates lowered anchor at their port, you witnessed a tense standoff between the Pirate Leader and the Port Authority. It was your impression that the port personnel are subservient to the Karub Pirates. The Authority informed the Pirates that their stores were depleted, and they’d barely be able to resupply before shoving off.
Visibly unhappy, the Pirate Leader instructed his crew to take on provisions for their next journey.
Once the supplies were secured, the Karub leader bid farewell to you with an address loud enough for the port residents to hear:
“Perhaps these Land Lorbies could pay you to investigate the absence of the traders from the interior, since they lack any courage among their numbers!”
You start a new chapter in an isolated base on the shores of a strange land.

Denslow says, let’s find these Land Lorbies and see about this mission. I wonder if they are anything like land sharks.

Max replies, I think that’s just a term for people who don’t live on the sea, not a new species. But who knows around here? It would be good to be on a successful adventure…

"Let's find somewhere to stay while we learn about this new land, and its opportunities."

Kurot takes a moment to survey the lay of the land. Knowing that many humanoids don't respond well to being interrogated by an android, he waits for someone else to act as spokesman for the group.
Spokesperson.
Spokes-sentient.
Whatever.

The Jag Oru Coast 56D/82 (Morning)
Port Vorak lies on a narrow stretch of coastline along the shore of a tropical jungle (The Jag Oru Coast). Its natural harbor provides shelter from the sea, and the area teems with small terrestrial and avian fauna. However, trade from the interior has been disrupted, leaving the port's supplies critically low. There has been no contact for weeks, and none of the 14 port personnel have attempted to venture into the jungle.
“We have few belongings and only small coastal craft for transport. Traveling along the coast carries the risk of encountering raiders from Bur Oros the farther north one goes. To the south lie the lands of the Monki tribes, which are best avoided,” says Ohn-Tye, the manimal serving as Port Authority.

“We know little about the interior—only stories and rumors from local traders. Tales of ruined cities, strange intelligent metal constructs, dangerous beasts, and imposing temples are common. Despite this, the port has never faced any threats from the jungle.”
Ohn-Tye pauses and stares out across the harbor.
“We can sustain ourselves indefinitely with seafood, but the Karub Pirates require regular resupply. Without provisions from the interior, we cannot function as a port of call for them and risk incurring their wrath.”

Denslow says, Are there any issues with getting your provisions from the interior? You say there are no threats from there.
Perhaps the pirates are the real problem. Have you ever sent someone to deal with them?

The Jag Oru Coast 56D/82 (Morning)
“Plister Plantient,” replies Ohn-Tye, “we don’t have the knowledge or skills to hunt or forage in these jungles!"

"Only a few among us would dare risk an encounter with the wild beasts prowling the interior. Wait until tonight and you’ll hear the haunting music of the jungle's spawn.”
"Regarding the Pirates, opposing them would initiate a chain reaction detrimental to our wellbeing."

Silvestri
"Do you have a map, or at least an idea, of the route the traders would take through the jungle?"

Barry
Over hearing the conversation between the new comers and Ohn-Tye, Barry walks up to the group, looking over Ohn-Tye.
"I will help if you will have me. I haven't been into the jungle, but I know it is a dangerous place and having a large pack is better than a small one."

The Jag Oru Coast 56D/82 (Morning)

"There is a well-maintained trail that leads into the jungle to the west of here. Its path avoids the pooled mires, toxic flora and sinkholes hidden by the undergrowth. Liant once ventured a mile or so down the trail. She might be able to offer more details."

Thank you, Ohn-Tye, says Denslow. Can you point out where Liant is so that we might speak with her?
He turns to his companions: We might be better off helping to secure this path than messing with pirates. Let’s also see if we can find a merchant who has travelled it as well. That could be useful.

Max chuckles, Hate to go barking up the wrong tree, eh Apples? I say we check out a lost city. Could be good loot there.
And we can’t rely on just one harbor master’s word when it comes to pirates. He might be in their employ.

"Sure, I can help finding Liant and I know the town well enough to help you find what you need. I am Barry by the way, been working as a laborer at the docks here lately but I can cook and have done some carpentry too so I can help out around camp if you will have me."

Drakshar
@Norjax - Drakshar has Navigation. Is it sea or land navigation, o can it be used in both situations?
A massive, muscular humanoid with two feral rat heads approaches the group - one head sniffs at them while the other looks curiously at Ohn-Tye -
"If you are venturing inland and need a strong arm, we would join you strangers" - one of the heads speaks in a guttural, almost rasping voice, while the manimal pats his morning star -
"We are good at navigation" - offers the second head, with a distinctive faster cadence, punctuated by hisses and growls -
"Also as guards and scouts" - adds the first one.
"We are Drakshar" - they both offer simultaneously.

Silvestri
"Well met Drakshar. I am Silvestri. It sounds like a strong arm and keen eyes would be of use in the jungle."
