The Unseen Servant forums

Hi everyone...Been a few years since I've gamed. I got my start in AD&D back in, oh, somewhere around the 1986-ish timeframe. I've run a tabletop game or two over the years, dabbled in other fantasy RPG's, even gone so far as to say "I think I'm done playing D&D." But I always come back. I've never gone more than a few years without playing; mostly due to real life stuff. I think most of all I enjoy the creative part of RPG's, but nothing beats a good dungeon crawl! This will be my first PbP experience, and looking forward to it. Anywho, glad to be here and looking forward to meeting a few folks and playing in my first dungeon crawl.

Wasn't he the fellow from Oscar Wilde's Importance of being Earnest who had a fantasy character friend 'Bunbury' who was always on the verge of near death.

Ah..."Algernon Moncrieff"
I know of The Importance of Being Earnest, but had not connected that Algernon. Mine is referring to Algernon Blackwood, an English broadcasting narrator, journalist, novelist and short story writer.
But I suppose Algernon Moncrieff would be fitting as well. It's premise, " a farcical comedy in which the protagonists maintain fictitious personae to escape burdensome social obligation," as well as your comment above " always on the verge of near death," I suppose, makes for an idealistic interpretation of Players and their Characters. Yes/No?

My favorite being The Willows - not because of it's popularity, or because it was one of H.P. Lovecraft's favorites, but rather the ingenious way Blackwood develops and builds the horror through description, subconscious thought, and our fear of the unknown. It is a simple yet effective. One of my favs.

Similarly welcome! And I very much feel our paths might cross -- thought I first started dnding with 3e, I am playing a chunk of odnd and bx these days (and it's only a matter of time before I take another go at adnd2)

I quite agree with you about The Willows. It's rarely been equaled, although I must admit a certain fondness for The Wendigo and Ancient Sorceries.
