2nd Scroll - Bamboo and Butterfly

#1 Post by jemmus »

Yoritomo and the generals do not address the troops. Instead, their mounted messengers ride to the Minamoto, Takeda and Matsumoto contingents and each general returns to his respective army. A Takeda officer commands both the infantry and cavalry units, and lieutenants under them command the separate units. Kentaro and Hiroshi surmise that the couriers delivered instructions for the order of march. They wait while the Minamoto cavalry, then infantry, then ashigaru, then possibly ronin units take to the road. They are around 3,000. Then they wait as the Takeda in service cavalry, infantry and ashigaru fall in behind the Minamoto. Then Kentaro's unit moves, followed by Hiroshi's. The Takeda are around 1,500. And then 500 of the Matsumoto follow, trailed by the supply train with its porters, horses, and oxen.

Travel is slow for the army. A hawk flying overhead would see it moving in a long wave of starts and stops. Faster units stand and wait for slower ones ahead of them on the road. Units behind them also come to a stop. It's a continually sequence of stop, wait, then hurry to catch up. Then catch up, and wait again. The captains and lieutenants at the heads and tails of clan columns grow impatient with their counterpart officers of other clans' columns.

Hiroshi and Haruto know that the Takeda are good, hard and proud bushi. But neither know of the Takeda, Minamoto, or Matsumoto ever having been in an operation of this scale. 5,000 men, three allied but mostly unfamiliar to each other clans. The Minamoto princes from the broad and rich Kanto coastal floodplains of southeastern Nippon; the cultured Matsumoto from the narrow mountain valleys of Shinano; and the proud Takeda horsemen of Kai. Under the command of Minamoto no Yoritomo, a person who seems bent on imposing his will-- and on achieving greater things for himself, no matter what the cost to anyone. Kentaro and Hiroshi have seen dominant males of the sort before, both among humans and monkey tribes. But never as awe-inspiring as in the case of this Minamoto no Yoritomo with his tiger skin blanket under his horse's saddle, wheeling his horse around, and cutting of Takeda and Matsumoto daimyo and their whispering advisors.

And then there's the matter of the Battle of Ishibashi-yama. Where this Yoritomo was pursued by the Taira, masters of the capital and family of the infant Emperor, failed to link up with his allied body, and only escaped by hiding in a hollow tree trunk with a fellow officer. Perhaps there's a reason that the Minamoto, Matsumoto, and Takeda eye each other as the march south on the road toward Fuji-san.

Long before dusk, the generals call a halt to the march. The army has gotten halfway to the town at the base of Fuji-san. The units spread out across the dry rice fields, light fires, laugh or worry, and cook their rations of rice. Kentaro and Hiroshi can only guess that the Taira army is moving not much more quickly in their pursuit of Yoritomo.
And goal of finishing and erasing him and his disturbance. Forever.

Beside the cavalry and infantry fires, Hiroshi and Kentaro each think on the prospects for the upcoming battle. Banners flutter and strangers bushi blow on their hands in the early winter night. A low rank samurai corporal comes around and shows crude drawings of kamon emblems. Don't chop carrying these. Got it, you bums?
ImageImageImage

But if you see one of these, get the head and get one gold, got it? Unless the other guy gets yours. Then you'rer down two. Your own head-- and your gold coin! Heh ha ha! Ganbatte, do or die, eh? See you out there.
Image

Any actions?

Intent on impressing Minamoto no Yoritomo and hopefully showing-up the Matsumoto in the process, Kentaro tries to position himself forward. He hopes to challenge the enemy to a personal combat - he has long imagined reciting his grandfather's name before the other samurai...

Hiroshi will jostle for position to stay forward also (starting off Courageous). If he's to improve his station, he must be bold.

Ronin jostling the samurai at the front could cause some trouble.
#3. Samurai have the right to fight at the front of the unit. But they will treat ronin caste bushi as comrades in arms and support them and give them aid as if they were samurai.
The best way to get the attention of Yoritomo or another officer is to fight Courageous mode turns, as Taisho will the first turn.

The combined army bivouacs in fields along the road to Fuji-san. It is a cold night's sleep for the Hiroshi, Kentaro, and everyone else. Before dawn, war drums are used to rouse the troops.
Image
It again takes a full Nippon hour for the Minamoto, Takeda, and Matsumoto army to eat, saddle horses, and assemble on the road. But after a full day of marching yesterday, the units are better at not getting in each others' way, and progress is quicker. The army follows the road south through the large village of Fujikawa-cho at the foot of Fuji-san and turn off onto a smaller road leading south. It wraps around the west side of the base of Fuji-san.
Map. Fujikawa-cho is at the intersection of the black road and white road below D. viewtopic.php?p=589567#p589567

Kentaro and Hiroshi look up, having never been so close to the holy mountain and spiritual heart of Nippon before. Unfortunately, as on most days, the top is obscured by a layer of clouds. The army moves along the road beside the pebble-bottomed Fujikawa River, which is a foot or less deep. In the late afternoon, a murmuring is heard coming from the head of the column. Word soon passes back from from unit to unit: "The Taira's banners are sighted. ten thousand strong." Or that's the figure when the news reaches Hiroshi and Kentaro. The figure may have originally started at 1,000 or even 100, for all they know. The lore known to all bushi says that soldiers in armies are prone to sharing rumors, and the rumors tend to get more and more exaggerated and far from the truth as they go along.

Hiroshi's and Kentaro's units reach the head of the column. The red and white butterfly kamon banners of the Taira can be seen They are to the right hand, in a field across the shallow and now wide Fujikawa.
Image
Minamoto no Yoritomo at Fujikawa
From the size of their own units, the two ronin guess there are maybe 6,000 to 7,000 Taira. A thousand or more than their own 5,000. The enemy seem to have been preparing to bivouac, but now they are rushing to quickly deploy as units. The Minamoto have turned right-face to march in a line parallel to the Taira lines to the west. The Takeda follow, and when they're reached their position, left face to face the enemy. Yoritomo and the other generals are seen conferring from horseback, but this time behind the lines of bushi. Eyes front! the sergeants bark. By the time the Matsumoto arrived and taken their places in the lines, the early winter sun is setting.

The bushi nervously wait for the order to charge across the river, or for the Taira samurai to ride up issuing challenges. But neither happens. As dusk gathers, both armies send forward large numbers of mounted and foot sentries to the river's sides. Each group is perhaps 300 paces forward of its lines. When night falls, Kentaro's and Hiroshi's units are ordered to eat and rest by their arms while they wait for their own pickets watches. The Takeda samurai and ashigaru around them seem tense and unable to rest.

The two ronin's units are sent for their watches after the first Nippon hour after dark. There's just a sliver of moon, and the field is almost pitch black. The Taira camp and its horse and foot sentries cannot be seen. The bushi of Kentaro's and Hiroshi's strain their eyes and ears, watching for a sudden attack from any side.

Suddenly there is a huge commotion from the area of the water. Splashing and loud, rushed, beating sounds. And suddenly a bigger commotion from the direction of the Taira camp. There is the sound of yelling and disorder, horses whinnying, objects colliding and being dropped. Figures can vaguely be seen dashing around campfires, lantern lights bob wildly, as if carried by running feel. Takeda officers ride up to the pickets, watching and listening. Soon it seems that the entire Takeda army has fallen in behind the sentries, weapons ready. The din in the Taira camp continues, but in a few minutes recedes into the distance, then dissipates altogether.

The above post was revised because I found the Yoritomo image showing the terrain.
Sorry, more storytelling without much opportunity for player input. But something kind of unbelievable happened.
-I mentioned before about the Honor Bound module being set in Kai, and how I made the Takeda the rulers. (They ruled Kai 300 years later, but I didn't know about in 1180). I arbitrarily made them Minamoto.
-I used Google Maps to find place names for towns around Kofu. One of them was Fujikawa-cho. When Haruto joined, we made his family ninyo of Fujikawa-cho.
-I was looking at a map of Japan with the sites of Genpei War battles. One was at Fujikawa, Taira vs. Minamoto and Takeda. (It was on November 10, 1180. I had to move the date to December 8, 1180 to fit our game's chronology).

So Honor Bound and some arbitrary homebrew decisions lead to a real historical battle, with the correct characters and at the beginning of the war, where we are. And it lead to Haruto's hometown being threatened by the Taira. None of that was planned.

Here's what happened while the PCs were on picket duty. A very short read.https://military-history.fandom.com/wik ... f_Fujikawa

The next morning, Hiroshi, Kentaro and their units were again roused to duty by battle drums. When the Sun rose, the Minamoto armies looked across the river to the Taira camp. Wisps of smoke rose from the remains of campfires. Tents stood empty, or half knocked down. Cooking pots, o-yoroi and ashigaru armor, and weapons were strewn about. Bushels of rice, kegs of sake, and other supplies stood neatly stacked, with their pack horses and oxen tethered beside them.

A murmur of astonishment slowly rose from the 5,000 Minamoto, Matsumoto and Takeda bushi. It soon turned into a cheer of happiness, with weapons upraised.. When that died down, the jokes began. “Did they see a ghost?” “Did the 500 Matsumoto scare them? More than half of which are skinny ashigaru who haven't eaten fish in a year.” “See that pack horse there. Its rope is wound round and around its stake. From a Taira cavalryman trying to escape on it while it was still tethered!” It seems that the spirits of the combined armies are lifted. This time Yoritomo didn't hide in a hollow tree. This time the previous victors ran without a fight. The morale seems to have shifted to the Minamoto side.

Hiroshi's sergeant sets the record straight. Here's the real story. He makes the sign of ninja kuji kuri hand gestures. He nods, saying with his eyes, Yes, reliable information from ninja spies. Water fowl on the beach got disturbed and suddenly flew away. The Taira thought it was us doing a night attack from across the river. A few panicked and fled, and that caused a mass panic. No man trusting another, every man fearing he'd been betrayed by cowards and not wanting to be the fool who was cut down alone. Twenty cowards made 6,000 cowards. Kentaro's sergeant says something similar to his unit. It seems that its the official announcement from the top.

The quartermasters will collect the goods. No looting is allowed. Ronin, no pay for you for this 'battle,' because the enemy did not fight. But don't worry, you'll have your battle soon enough. We're pursuing across the rivers into Suruga.

The armies fell into their marching order and continued marching south into Suruga of the wealthy Imagawa Taira clan, masters of three provinces. Mounted Taira bushi sometimes observed the armies from a distance, but avoided any encounters. Peasants in the Suruga fields bowed to the Minamoto army, hedging their bets. The army reached the coast and the Tokaido highway and bivouacked in the fields. Hiroshi and Kentaro again endure a cold night, this one made worse by a cold steady breeze.

The next morning, the sky is a uniform gray. The army entered the highway and turned west. Heading deeper into Taira territory in pursuit of the defeated army. It reached a high, narrow ocean side pass they learned is called Satta.
Image
The officers seems concerned, and the army stood waiting for hours while the commanders discussed. The bushi whiled away the time speculating. “This is a crucial point of the highway. Only a few can pass at a time. It's like going backward through a funnel. A little goes through at a time. But a big cone of water could be waiting on the other side, ready to attack the few emerging at once from all sides.” Eventually the word comes down. Each unit is to double-time through the pass, emerge, and assume its previous place in the battle line. Again, double-time.

Kentaro's ronin cavalry unit emerges, followed by Hiroshi's infantry ronin. Again the Taira's tents and red banners are arrayed, but just a mere 500 paces away. The enemy are on a flat plain cut by rice fields' straight raised bunds. A wooded hill of maples and pines is at their back. The Taira are milling about, forming for battle, as is the arriving Minamoto, Takeda, and Matsumoto. The various clans' officers ride up and down the line, shouting, Pray to your ancestors and make them proud of you! The offspring of their hard work and suffering!” A light snow flurry begin to fall, partially obscuring sight of the banners, horses and men of the Taira.

Shortly before the lines have fully assembled, the snowing stops, but the winds don't. Minamoto no Yoritomo himself and his entourage and guard troop ride up and down the lines, inspecting. It seems that he's not there to inspire, but to gather facts, and correct any defects. He then rides to the center, raises his marshal's baton and calls out, Bushi! You have trained every moment of you lives for this moment! He is not an especially flamboyant or charismatic speaker. Instead, he gives the impression of being a ruthlessly stubborn operator and a man who intent on having his every command obeyed. Nonetheless, he is impressive. This is a man who has no doubts about himself, and no fear of taking extreme measures to push his destiny to its very end. If your horse is lathered-- run it to the ground! If your feet feel slow-- make them move faster than ever before! If your arm is tired-- make it strike truer and harder than ever before! Today is the one day to prove the worth of your hard bugei training. Today is the day to honor your ancestors, and defend your families from their enemies. No one will run away from ducks and loons, like the Taira. Honor! Though it means death!

The bushi of the Minamoto army raise their weapons over their heads yell a battle cry. The gusting winds blow the powdery snow across the rectangular fields and pile it against the walls of the bunds. The Taira army raise dai-kyu, yari, naginata, and katana overhead and answer with their own battle cry. The horses look, point their ears and front, paw the earth, and snort steam. The white, blue and black banners of the clans of the Minamoto army whip and turn in the gusts of wind. As do the red ones of the army across the fields.

The Battle of Okitsu
Taira, 6,000 troops (6 Troop Points). Minamoto, 5,000 troops (5 Troop Points (PT))

Situational Modifiers: None. The Taira were on the offensive into Minamoto lands to wipe out the leaders of the insurrection. And nearly did. Morale: +1 Taira, -1 Minamoto. Effect to Minamoto recruiting/rallying efforts because doubts and poor morale (homebrew GMing). Taira retreat and disgrace at Battle of Fujikawa. -2 Taira, +1 Minamoto. Taira on home ground, the capital and reinforcements to their back, +1. Net 0.

The Minamoto army arrived at 12:00 noon. Deployment/Preparation Round - [1d3-1]=3-1=2 2 Nippon hours. Battle starts at 4:00 PM

One-time initial senjo-jutsu (Strategy) roll to see is either commander gets +1 to each Turn roll throughout the battle.
Taira no Koremori: [1d20]=15
Minamoto no Yoritomo senjo-jutsu roll: [1d20]=15
Both fail, +0 each for the battle.

Turn 1. Hiroshi: Courageous mode. Kentaro: Courageous mode.

Commanders' 1d6 rolls for combat results.
Taira no Koremori [1d6]=3
Minamoto no Yoritomo [1d6]=3
3 and 3, tied. Deadlocked results. Per the rules, no losses on either side. But it's been 2 hours of combat, so homebrew rule says half a Troop Point loss per side.

Commanders Koremori and Yoritomo get BCS throws to lose only half TP.
Taira no Koremori [1d6]=3 Loses the full 1/2 TP. Current army at 5.5 TP. (5,500 troops).
Minamoto no Yoritomo: [1d20]=3 Saves. Losses at .50% this turn, so loses .25 TP. TP at 4.75, vs. 5.5. Less than 2:1 ratio, so no bonuses to either side next turn.

PCs roll on the 2d6 on the Deadlocked column of page 36 of book 2. Add 2 for Courageous mode, and please post your results. The first round of battle is challenges to single combat, acceptances, and final resolutions. We can RP that after we see your rolls results.

Turn 1 - Deadlocked and Courageous [2d6+2]=5+2=7
"1-3H INJ": [1d3]=3 Heads [1d3]=3 hp
Kentaro collects three Taira heads, but is injured. 23/26 hp.

Intent on getting to the front line, Kentaro finds an opening when several of the in-service Samurai fall defeated. He glances left at Minamoto no Yoritomo and the Matsumoto samurai, then bellows at the opposing army, his deep voice carrying over the din.

"I am Togakushi no Kentaro, grandson of Togakushi no Daisuke, who overcame the dragon of Hida, Bushi of the Hida mountains! Son of my father, Togakushi no Katashi, I have looked upon Fuji-san, served as Yojimbo to the Fujikawa, bowed to Fuujin-sama and come as a divine wind for the heads of the honorless Taira!" Tafu snorts, stamping the battlefield with his broad hooves, the massive beast looking average sized under the bulk of his armed and armored master.

His incitement works. One of the Taira samurai rides at him, answering the challenge, katana drawn. Better with the sword but uncertain of his own horsemanship, Kentaro holds the Kuge's katana with bold hands and receives the charge, nudging Tafu only to pivot slightly to mitigate impact. His blade slides home, blood spraying his armor as the samurai slides backwards off his horse from the force of the blow.

But it worked too well. Another comes at him. Then another. The bellowing of an upstart ronin has done its job and Kentaro is beset. The battle is fierce and chaotic. Finally, Kentaro stands victorious, cutting the third head from his fallen foes, but his own side cut and bleeding down past his waist. Finally able to look down and see his wound, he staunches it with fabric, and looks back toward the Matsumoto to see how the rest of the battle fares as he remounts Tafu...

That's a nice roll. A lot of heads, not much damage.

We need Hiroshi's and Kentaro's modes for next turn. They can stay Courageous or move a step down to Dutiful.

We also need to make a ruling on when players have to state their mode for the turn. Before they know whether it's a Winning, Deadlocked, or Losing turn? Or after? I always assumed players declare before the commanders' rolls, but the rules don't specifically say that.

This time the Taira don't run. The Minamoto, Takeda, and Matsumoto charge with a great cry and the Taira rush out to meet them. There's a sound of 8,000 loosed bowstrings, the swoosh of as many arrows in the arrow, and the striking of arrowhead on steel. Men and horses scream. In the next few seconds, tens of thousands of skillfully aimed arrows fly at their targets.
Image
Amazing feats of yadomejutsu are seen, but more often bushi are struck repeatedly.
Image

Then the armies meet at hand to hand, eyeball to eyeball range. It is pure chaos. There are no formations and no officers shouting orders. It is just a huge combat of bushi versus bushi. Here, two samurai duel with katana and naginata. There, three ashigaru pull a ronin from his horse and stab him with yari. And there, an arrow-shot samurai runs pursued by two with naginata. The great battle is fought in clusters of a thousand individual fights.

Kentaro calls out his ancestry and challenges the nearby Taira to combat. But none are off sufficient rank to reply with their own proud heritage. They respond instead with yari, naginata, and tetsubo. Kentaro fells two of them, suffers a slight wound from a third, and cuts him and another down. He takes their heads for proof of his valor in combat. Hiroshi's experience is similar, but he defeats six foes and takes their heads.

After a Nippon hour, the battle is still deadlocked. The bushi of both sides struggle and battle on, but the sun is setting. War drums from one side beats the rhythm for parlay, and drums from the other side join. The day's fighting is done. The bushi eye each other warily and draw back. Some in the midst of of fierce combat refuse to stop, until one of them goes down. In places bushi treacherously strike down a foe who has lowered his weapon, and the fight starts up again. But eventually each side withdraws to its own camp. Men with ghastly wounds and limp along as best they can.

Mounted officers of both sides meet in the middle of the field. They do not talk long before riding back to their own side. Hiroshi and Kentaro guess that tomorrow will be another fight. And this time, a full day of battle, until one side or the other goes down in defeat.

If the two sides roll the same number, the parlay results in the battle ending.
Taira [1d6]=6 Minamoto [1d6]=4

In this situation 1 TP is recovered for every 4 lost in the battle. “This represents the restoration of the lightly wounded and the return or reorganization of Troop Points that were rendered ineffective but not destroyed in the previous day's fighting. A successful Senjo-jutsu BCS roll by the commander converts any fractional recoveries to a full Troop Point.”
Yoritomo [1d20]=10 Koremori [1d20]=19
Taira lost 0.5 TP, recover 0.1. 5.6 TP.
Minamoto lost .25, recover 0.06. 4.756 TP. Still +0 for both sides due to TP ratio.

Battle of Okitsu, Day 2
Hiroshi - Courageous. Kentaro - Courageous.

Commanders' senjo-jutsu rolls for advantage on Day 2.
Yoritomo [1d20]=15 Koremori [1d20]=3
Koremori succeeds, Taira get +1 to every turn's 1d6 roll until the battle ends.

Commanders' rolls. Yoritomo [1d6]=5 Koremori [1d6+1]=5+1=6
6-5=1, Minamoto lose 1 TP. Taira - 5.6 TP. Minamoto - 3.756 TP.
Minamoto are Losing. Please roll 2d6 on the Losing column and add 2 for Courageous. (p. 36 chart)

Hiroshi doesn't take as many heads this time, but he also escapes without further wounds...

PCs really mop up as long as their army isn't defeated :-)

The daily progress log has been updated with yesterday's and today's ' new battle Turn 1 results. viewtopic.php?p=585241#p585241
I missed Minamoto no Yoritomo' senjo-jutsu roll for reducing Turn 1 TP loss by half. [1d20]=18 Minamoto lose the full 1 TP.

Need Kentaro's and Hiroshi's mode calls for the next turn. Can stay at Courageous or move one step to dutiful.
