Character Creation Q&A

#1 Post by OGRE MAGE »

Here we can discuss all things related to AS&SH character creation.

I will answer questions and post the relevant information in this thread as we progress.

Lets use the 4D6 (drop the lowest) method for rolling stats. One roll per character, please!

If you end up with rolls you deem unplayable, toss them out and divide up 72 points between all 6 stats with none lower than a 8 and none higher than a 17.

To avoid the temptation of making multiple rolls, and to keep things fair for all players, we wont be using the bonus XP % for characters with higher stats.

Otherwise, character creation will be mostly by the book. I will make amendments to this as/if they arise.

Go ahead with any questions you can think of.

I will edit in the things I forgot to mention here as well, so the relevant items can all be found in this one post...

Campaign ID # 866

Max hit points at first level.

Is there a campaign # on the roller for this game yet? :)
It'll keep our rolling honest. ;)
This is a game about killing things and taking their stuff so you can become more powerful in order to kill bigger things and take even better stuff.
Alethan: I'm good with NOT pressing our luck this time.
mjulius: That's how I know I'm home.
Pulpatoon: The whole point of PbP is to take the scheduling pressure off the game. We're just chatty because we're so eager!
Scott308: ...everyone should be reminded of just how wonderful the people they play games with here can be in real life.
Leitz: Quality and quantity wise, I think US is the best I've seen.
Paladin: I can promise terror, glory, and riches...or a quick and brutal death.
Inferno: Come on! That's was Vicar's Head, a completely different doomed village!
Rex: I can move to the wait list to let someone else into the game.

OK, I will think about this and work on the PC when I get home from work tonight. Interesting set. Tempted to put the 3 on Int, but not sure I can pull off the role playing aspect of it.

Ability Scores [4d6c1] = 13 [4d6c1] = 14 [4d6c1] = 3
Ability Scores [4d6c1] = 13 [4d6c1] = 14 [4d6c1] = 14

I think I'm going to go for a ranger with these rolls.
Stats: STR:14, INT:10, WIS:11, CON:14, DEX:18, CHR:11

Also, are we rolling for our first level hit points?

So, two fighter types and a cleric type thus far?
I was thinking "hey a clerics always easy for me" then I looked all the stuff up and realized what a runegraver is! :D If we don't have an MU PC, will that hurt us? If someone picks up an MU I'll go scout or bard; pretty sure I could handle one of those.

Rolls:
Ability Scores [4d6c1] = 10 [4d6c1] = 10 [4d6c1] = 13
Ability Scores [4d6c1] = 14 [4d6c1] = 13 [4d6c1] = 15

Whee, looks like we are going to be a bunch of average Joes! Wouldn't want to go caster with this set of scores anyway  If we think we need another fighter type, I can look into the huntsman. But for now I'm looking at ... oh wait a minute, you don't have to go with a subclass? Is just being a "thief" too vanilla?

Runegraver doesn’t have much in the way of healing and no turning ability.
There is the ale horn for healing (2 hp per day per CA level), but that’s pretty much it.

The subclasses are really varied! As are the races. But the races seem mainly for flavor, no real mechanical instances except one of them lives longer IIRC. should be fun!

We are learning (the hard way) in our FtF home game group that a Runegraver does not make a good fill-in for a cleric.

The base cleric class seems the best way to go, to get a healer. A WIS of 15 can't be too bad! :D

By the Powers, those are the best rolls I've ever had in an OSR game! A most propitious beginning :)

Also, if I am allowed to post that, please find linked an AS&SH Name Generator approved by the game's creator himself. Hope you find it useful!

Well, if it's approved by Jeff, then how can I refuse.

One thing I should have mentioned while you equip your characters.......

I am a bit of a stickler on players who ignore encumbrance. Without going into too much detail, please remember that you will be starting out at sea in this game.

We all know what happens to heavy things in water, right?

Light and svelte will be the name of the game for the first portion of this adventure. So no need to waste a ton of time and money on plate mail, 4 extra weapons, hammers and pitons, etc.

Just double checking, but we can arrange attributes as desired?

That's correct.

I should have been more clear on that.

I'm guessing that warlocks don't get the INT bonus to spells cast per day?

edit: just found it, they do get the bonus :-)
