As Telemachus and Feargus are showing interest in getting the items identified, Newton will go looking for retainers.
He'll investigate if there is a particular place retainers go to advertise their availability. As a start he'll ask some approachable looking city guards to see if they can help.
After spending a day searching the pair find two potential candidates; an untrained youth named Rahron Ard and a warrior named Jacon Brandles. Brandles claims to have served as a footsoldier in a mercenary company, but left after a few battles to attempt and make a living as an adventurer.Pulpatoon wrote:Aldus goes with Newton to look for retainers.

Re: IC
Telemachus gathers that the two magicians mentioned earlier -- Tyrol Macneth and Wilsha the Wily -- are most likely the two most powerful magic-users in the city; those able to enchant magical items are, he knows, more puissant than he is. It is likely that one of those two would be the ones to speak to about the spells contained within the found spellbook.sulldawga wrote:Telemachus
The mage is happy to deal with finding a sage to identify the magical items the party has in their possession.
EDIT: Telemachus is also on the lookout for a sage or magician who can help him figure out the spells from the partially ruined spellbook he has.

The Old Quarter
The Old Quarter is as it sounds; a warren of ancient buildings close to the center of the city. It is built largely of brick and slate, with mortar crumbling from between the joins and efflourescing down the walls in long streaks. Despite a slight sense of claustrophobia, and the general age of the buildings, the dwellings here are all well-maintained, the streets quiet even as scores of people traverse them. More than a few have liveried guards posted out front, and those emerging from within seem well-dressed and comported. Unlike the truly opulent dwellings that surrounded the main square, which the companions have since learned is called "Prince's Square", those in the Old Quarter seem to contain the old, well-to-do families; merchants and traders, master craftsmen who employ their own workers, scribes, and sages, retired adventurers, and so forth. Reker Nus's tower is easy to identify; it is of brick and slate, the roof and upper story streaked with thick rivulets of pigeon shit.
There is a woman, as stiff and quiet as a statue, in a red and blue surcoat with a short blade at her side. Her hair is braided in three long cords, and she looks down at the adventurers as they approach. "What do you seek at the Tower of Nus?" she asks, loudly.

The mage seeks out a sage, or sages, first, and ascertains the magical capabilities of the party's items.
Then he attempts to gain an audience with either of Tyrol or Wilsha.

Gardo
After waking up, Gardo gets up to stretch. As he lifts one arm up, he winces. "Blast. This wound from the ghast is not healing up easily. Well, still need to take care of things today."
He finds Notai. "So, what things would you need to to gear up to travel with me? Also, is there anything I need to know that is different about you from a plain human as I?"

It's hard to explain puns to kleptomaniacs because they always take things literally.

"Yeah...what he said." Feargus is beginning to realize that much of the conversation now may go right over his head. Still though, better to look knowledgeable in front of Goshawk.

The guard nods and tugs at a cord hanging beside the door. There is a faint tinkling, from somewhere far inside, and then, after the space of a few hearbeats, a bell next to her head chimes softly. "Follow me," she says, and leads the adventurers indoors. It is cool and musty inside, and smells like books and leather. The companions are led dow a narrow corridor, up a steep staircase, and finally into a large open room that seems to occupy the top floor of the tower. Bookshelves line the wall, and a youthful man sits behind a large desk. "I am Reker Nus!" he exclaims, "pre-eminant sage of this fair city."sulldawga wrote:Telemachusthirdkingdom wrote:The Old Quarter

Telemachus
"Reker Nus, I am Telemachus. My colleagues and I are adventurers operating out of Junction. We've found some items with seemingly ancient provenance, or else ensorcelled with magical properties beyond my ability to understand. We seek your wisdom to identify these items and their utility."
Telemachus spreads the items across the desk.

Reker Nus
The young sage scratches his chin. "I can certainly do that. Simple items typically cost me a day to identify, and 100 gold. More complicated items take one to two weeks, depending on the rarity of the item, and between 500 and 1000 gold. Minor items like this," he indicates the snake fang armband with a dismissive wave of a hand, "I will do for free, as what the merchants call a 'loss leader'. It is a minor item, and enchanted to protect the wearer from poison. After doing so once it will crumble into dust."

"Impressive."
He considers the offer for a moment. "It's a deal. How much do you want up front?"
"Nothing up front. We'll settle up when you come to collect the items. If you don't return within three months I will consider you dead and sell the items."
