OGRE MAGE wrote:A few more valid things are asked out loud though.

"Well, who will sit on this council of yours, master Liam? Will we all have a say in that? Can it be put to a vote of some kind?"

Liam nods and points the man out. That is in essence the idea, Sir. Nominate those that you think represent you in some way, we vote and allow those people to be on the council, representing you and your peers. Quick decisions can be made by the cousil and of course, larger issues, later on, can be debated and put to a vote among the people themselves. We can work out the nuance later, but ultimately a republic of some sort made up of elected officials seems best.

OGRE MAGE wrote: "I think Marge should be involved! Everybody trusts her opinion!"

Liam nods. Yes, as a matter of fact I thought of Marge and Caleb early on as fine nominees for such a position should they themselves accept such a position... They both have cool heads and know a good number of the people and what goes on in the day to day lives of individuals in town. I have often sought their help and counsil myself in my time being here.

OGRE MAGE wrote: "And what will a council be able to do about 500 unruly dwarves?"

Liam holds up his hands. I understand and acknowledge your concern. It is one we share. But I believe this is a time to prioritize. For the moment the dwarves are occupied with their copper mines... First thing we need to do is recapture our water source.
No sense worrying about something we can do nothing about now and go thirsty than to do something that we do have a chance to resolve quickly. A man seeks a drink before he seeks a shower, as they say.

OGRE MAGE wrote: "You want the monkoons to be on your council too?"

Liam pauses. No, not directly. But I believe at some point there should be a druid on the council who can act as a diplomate towards the Phanatons and be willing to hear any representatives or leadership that want to come to us. We must be open to the idea of friends as we are cautious of enemies.

OGRE MAGE wrote: "My fields are as bare as a baby's ass! Crops just aint growing like they should round here. I know things are getting better, but I wasn't one of the lucky ones who had the druids help."

Liam nods. We will look into getting you on the rotation. I believe that was the original plan, to move field to field with both aid of the Druids and fellow farmers, as well as allowing the livestock to graze on the post harvest plants which will clear the plots for new plowing as well as fertilizing them. But again, let us prioritize these things first, but I agree this should be high on the list if not immediate. Water first, with respect.

OGRE MAGE wrote: "I don't like the idea of an evil temple just up the trail a spell. Someone needs to go take a closer look into this."

Liam nods, glad people are seeming to calm and listen as much or more than they are talking. The important thing is people felt they were being heard. He kept his work up trying to answer and offer solutions or at least not let people feel ignored. I agree completely, and I have heard there were attacks by undead before. Perhaps that is the source of those problems. Do we know of any adventurers that have gone that way recently?

OGRE MAGE wrote: "Indigins huh? That sounds weird. Almost insulting. Someone told me that they had vast fields of fertile farmland. Is that true?"

Liam holds his hands up. My honest answer is I do not have the information to answer that question, but lets assume they do, then we have all the more reason to make friends and trade with them in an open and happy society. Perhaps they can even show us a few things about how to make the unique soil here more fertile that perhaps we have not considered.

OGRE MAGE wrote: "Mr. Nehru wouldn't let us build a church here, but some of us still want to."

Liam nods. I think we can consider that soon once our water situation is secured. I believe, on a very personal level, that there should be a spiritual presence on the council. I would nominate Father Reythan, if he does not object. For that matter perhaps we should have a Druid on the council as well. Equal representation from different views of how to practice those ideas. And maybe we have uncovered the approach to this... We have mentioned Marge and Caleb... Perhaps we have representatives of the various labors in town? The Waterbearers, the Farms, the Druids, the Clerics... I am unsure if there are Blacksmiths and Brewers, but certainly, we should make sure to have an odd number of people on counsil to avoid tied votes.

OGRE MAGE wrote: "I would like to be on your council! I have some pretty important ideas to share!"
Liam smiles and nods. What is your name, sir? Whom do you represent?
OGRE MAGE wrote: Raythan nods his affirmative response about handling the memorial service for the fallen man, smiling at Liam and the good job he is doing keeping the peace with the townies. Glansandi continues to watch on in great interest, waiting for someone in the crowd to nominate him to this council.
Liam saw his look and nods pointing to the Constable. And of course Law enforcement should be present at every meeting to help maintain order. The constable should have a place of honor to sit in on the council meetings and help mediate the grievances of the people to those that are making decisions. This position, I think, would be critical not only to maintain a sense of order but to reinforce the much needed security of our budding society which we are trying to build. Constable Glansandi... Would you accept this seperate but equally honored position of mediary of the people and council?

Dexter Broadleaf

Dexter waits until Liam is done speaking before he approaches him. "Liam, I know we haven't had much conversation yet," he says. "But I want you to keep me in mind when it comes time to deal with these pirates. I've known many an old sailor, and some few of them bore the scars from such men. It would do me well to address some of their debts."

At some point in these proceedings, Marge steps forward once her name comes up.

"I think we all need to keep calm here. Nobody is hurting more than me with the news about Nehru, but standing here arguing isn't going to help anyone. And just look at poor Liam here! The man is so exhausted that he can barely stand, yet he is the first one to offer his help. I think that speaks a great deal to his character."

The large and in charge Marge starts addressing separate groups, bunching certain peoples up together and talking with them individually. She gets all the farmers in one group, then the fishermen in another. Eventually, the old woman has several groups all discussing their options civilly, giving Liam time to speak with Dexter about his recruitment of adventurers who want to go after the biggest threat, the smuggling pirates at the river.

Raythan takes all of the religious seekers together to discuss how they will proceed with the funeral service and take suggestions on a communal place of worship. Glansandi stays near Liam, Dexter, and Daisy, clearly intent on finishing the discussion about how to deal with the pirates.

"I will go along as well, if the town can spare me. I have skills in fighting and am a natural at making battle plans. Perhaps we could recruit this Hrothgar fellow again, if he is as handy with a blade as you have said. I think Liam is correct in his thinking that we need to deal with them before worrying about anything else."

The commoner who asked about the Indijins steps up to Liam once discussions are well underway.

"Who told you that the natives were called that? I think there may have been a slight mix-up with the pronunciation. Or possibly even a communication breakdown of some kind? Doesn't Indijin sound a lot like another word in common that might fit their title a bit better?"

Liam nods and puts a hand on the smaller man's shoulder. Thank you, Master Broadleaf. We will need every able body we can muster I think.

He nods to her appreciatively and takes a step back to have a seat and listen a spell while he can.

Liam is impressed. He knew he made a right decision in nominating Marge to help organize. He had a vague idea and there she was taking it and making it happen. This could work...

Liam nod. I welcome your company, Constable. We will certainly need you. Hrothgar is... a bit boarish... but I would welcome him along again as well. He said he was heading to the Treehouse for some rum. We could send somebody if you like, or if my part is done here for the moment, I could go myself.

Liam looks up from his seat. I thought the same thing, but it came from the Chief, Powstab, himself. Though he seemed amused at the time. It is a temporary name if nothing else. Communication is limited with him right now until we can find someone able to make out their natural speech. Powstab speaks a little common though, so that is a start.

Daisy
Daisy watches in admiration as Marge gets the crowd sorted into working groups, rather than a potential panicked mob. She even sounds a little like Mother Superior...
Daisy smiles when talk turns to ending the pirate problem once and for all. If ya'll are going, count me in.

Marge, Raythan, and Caleb seem to have the gathering under control for the time being, allowing the adventuring types to plan their return trip to the river.

Glansandi pulls Dexter, Liam, and Daisy aside and speaks with them in a bit softer tone than his usual vibrato.

"You two appear to need some rest, badly. When should we plan on gathering our forces to investigate this pirate menace? Should we not send scouts ahead to watch their movements and get a better count on what we might be facing out there? It seems that all of the adventurers around here have cleared out most of the dangerous jungle denizens from here to there, but it would be to our benefit to find out their numbers before we make plans to attack, would it not."

The stern elf looks around uncomfortably.

"Do any of you know someone around here who is skilled in reconnaissance or surveillance?"

He stares down at the halfling unapologetically.

Dexter Broadleaf

Dexter's eyes go a bit wide at the suggestion. "Well ... uh..." he stammers. "I can hide myself well enough and move pretty quiet, but I'm no woodsman. How far is it from town to this cove? And how safe is that trip?" He waits to hear an answer to those questions and then continues. "I'm willing to go the last bit alone, but I'd like an escort to get me to the vicinity."
"There is no spoon."

Liam

Getting back to his feet as the Constable addresses them. I want to go on records as agreeing 100%. This is one of my reasons for wanting to recruit the druids to help get talks expedited with the Phanatons. I am sure they already have information on them or would be willing to do so with a promise of 1. cooperation in removing the Bing Threat, and 2. Another promise of peace between them and the Natives, who I am sure would stop eating them if they can only see they are not simple animals. The Phanatons, I believe, have more to gain from this than any of us.

Daisy scowls at the mention of the Indigents eating Phantons. Whatever it takes, ya'll. We got to stop this slaughter.

Glansandi nods at the halfling.

“You’re a brave one, Dexter. I like that. I will personally escort you there, if you wish. As I said, I think the trip along the beach is safe enough these days. But maybe a few others would like to go as well? I think we could benefit greatly from watching their movements for a day or two. Maybe we can even discover something about their numbers as well.”

Dexter Broadleaf

Dexter nods at Glansandi's suggestion of bringing others. "How about that Raythan gent? He seems like a nice level-headed gentleman. And a healer of sorts, isn't he? If I understood the local talk correctly?" He looks the constable up and down. "I think between the three of us, we'd be quiet and unobtrusive. Yes, sir, that is my word for the day.... un-ob-trusive. And since we are all rested, we could start as soon as you like."

Glansandi looks to Daisy and Liam next.

"I will try to recruit Raythan, but he seems reluctant to adventure again since he watched his friend get bitten in half by a huge sea troll a while back."

"What about you, miss Daisy? You seem to be looking for something more. Would Mr. Liam also be interested in going along too? Or is his place here, amongst his flock?"

"If so, I suggest a good nights rest, then setting out at first light."

Dexter nudges Daisy in the ribs gently. "And Brandobaris just can't pass up an adventure!"

OK, set for tomorrow. OM, about what time is it now? Trying to figure out what Dexter has time for before bed.

When characters are in town, I don't really track time of day.

So, as long as he isn't doing a full weeks worth of stuff, go ahead and tackle anything you need to do.

Thanks!

I will start a new thread for the folks who want to go out to investigate the river shortly.

Looked very torn... looking between those talking about scouting, which was important... then the council forming which was still at best in its primordial stages... he felt responsible for what was forming and that he should remain and try to help there... and of course... there was his animals and Joe... He wanted desperately to check on them all since he had been gone so long. And the water situation...

I'm sorry, but I feel there is too much work to be done here. I should stay behind and contribute what little I can here. I will try to help organize the counsel and spearhead an effort for an alternative water source in the meantime.

Dexter nods. "Well yes, Mr. Meadstaff. I didn't really expect you to come along. Don't fret, we can do this, I am sure." He looks around. "Say, since we don't leave before morning, where can a man find a drink in these parts?"

After taking his leave from the recon team and wishing them luck, goes to Marge, Caleb, and anyone else in the forming counsel. Well, where do we stand, Ladies and Gentlemen?
