"Well, who will sit on this council of yours, master Liam? Will we all have a say in that? Can it be put to a vote of some kind?"
Liam nods and points the man out. That is in essence the idea, Sir. Nominate those that you think represent you in some way, we vote and allow those people to be on the council, representing you and your peers. Quick decisions can be made by the cousil and of course, larger issues, later on, can be debated and put to a vote among the people themselves. We can work out the nuance later, but ultimately a republic of some sort made up of elected officials seems best.
OGRE MAGE wrote: "I think Marge should be involved! Everybody trusts her opinion!"
Liam nods. Yes, as a matter of fact I thought of Marge and Caleb early on as fine nominees for such a position should they themselves accept such a position... They both have cool heads and know a good number of the people and what goes on in the day to day lives of individuals in town. I have often sought their help and counsil myself in my time being here.
OGRE MAGE wrote: "And what will a council be able to do about 500 unruly dwarves?"
Liam holds up his hands. I understand and acknowledge your concern. It is one we share. But I believe this is a time to prioritize. For the moment the dwarves are occupied with their copper mines... First thing we need to do is recapture our water source.
No sense worrying about something we can do nothing about now and go thirsty than to do something that we do have a chance to resolve quickly. A man seeks a drink before he seeks a shower, as they say.
OGRE MAGE wrote: "You want the monkoons to be on your council too?"
Liam pauses. No, not directly. But I believe at some point there should be a druid on the council who can act as a diplomate towards the Phanatons and be willing to hear any representatives or leadership that want to come to us. We must be open to the idea of friends as we are cautious of enemies.
OGRE MAGE wrote: "My fields are as bare as a baby's ass! Crops just aint growing like they should round here. I know things are getting better, but I wasn't one of the lucky ones who had the druids help."
Liam nods. We will look into getting you on the rotation. I believe that was the original plan, to move field to field with both aid of the Druids and fellow farmers, as well as allowing the livestock to graze on the post harvest plants which will clear the plots for new plowing as well as fertilizing them. But again, let us prioritize these things first, but I agree this should be high on the list if not immediate. Water first, with respect.
OGRE MAGE wrote: "I don't like the idea of an evil temple just up the trail a spell. Someone needs to go take a closer look into this."
Liam nods, glad people are seeming to calm and listen as much or more than they are talking. The important thing is people felt they were being heard. He kept his work up trying to answer and offer solutions or at least not let people feel ignored. I agree completely, and I have heard there were attacks by undead before. Perhaps that is the source of those problems. Do we know of any adventurers that have gone that way recently?
OGRE MAGE wrote: "Indigins huh? That sounds weird. Almost insulting. Someone told me that they had vast fields of fertile farmland. Is that true?"
Liam holds his hands up. My honest answer is I do not have the information to answer that question, but lets assume they do, then we have all the more reason to make friends and trade with them in an open and happy society. Perhaps they can even show us a few things about how to make the unique soil here more fertile that perhaps we have not considered.
OGRE MAGE wrote: "Mr. Nehru wouldn't let us build a church here, but some of us still want to."
Liam nods. I think we can consider that soon once our water situation is secured. I believe, on a very personal level, that there should be a spiritual presence on the council. I would nominate Father Reythan, if he does not object. For that matter perhaps we should have a Druid on the council as well. Equal representation from different views of how to practice those ideas. And maybe we have uncovered the approach to this... We have mentioned Marge and Caleb... Perhaps we have representatives of the various labors in town? The Waterbearers, the Farms, the Druids, the Clerics... I am unsure if there are Blacksmiths and Brewers, but certainly, we should make sure to have an odd number of people on counsil to avoid tied votes.
Liam smiles and nods. What is your name, sir? Whom do you represent?OGRE MAGE wrote: "I would like to be on your council! I have some pretty important ideas to share!"
Liam saw his look and nods pointing to the Constable. And of course Law enforcement should be present at every meeting to help maintain order. The constable should have a place of honor to sit in on the council meetings and help mediate the grievances of the people to those that are making decisions. This position, I think, would be critical not only to maintain a sense of order but to reinforce the much needed security of our budding society which we are trying to build. Constable Glansandi... Would you accept this seperate but equally honored position of mediary of the people and council?OGRE MAGE wrote: Raythan nods his affirmative response about handling the memorial service for the fallen man, smiling at Liam and the good job he is doing keeping the peace with the townies. Glansandi continues to watch on in great interest, waiting for someone in the crowd to nominate him to this council.
