Elitir

"If it isn't locked open the door and I will go through first. Finn, be ready in case it gets ugly." Elitir steps around the wee folk and moves to go through the opening door, shield and sword ready.

Grossphil the Feeble

Grossphil agrees wholeheartedly with the idea of allowing fighters in first and will take his place in the middle of the formation we decided on earlier.

Finnigan takes his place at the back of the line ("some things never change," he grumbles...) and walks through the doorway when his turn is up.

Living Room
Arrival Evening

Elitir lets the little ones get out of the way again before she pushes the normal wooden door open. The smaller room beyond looks like a library or meeting room of some kind. There are wide bookshelves overflowing with tomes that line 3 of the walls and a large table and chairs in the center of the floor. On the wall directly opposite this door there stands another of the strange black portals. To your immediate right, there is a huge glass window that overlooks the living area and its furniture. Mac can be seen through this window, sitting on one large couch and scratching himself through his wet robes. Next to the window there is a normal desk and chair that appears to have been rifled through recently. Loose papers are scattered on its top and around the opened drawers.

There is what appears to be a dead body laying on the floor half way between you and the opposite walls black portal. It looks like a human male, dressed in leather armor. There are no physical wounds on him that you can see from the door.

Just as Elitir is about to enter the room, the "body" suddenly jumps up to a crouch. He slides a glass flask across the hard floor towards the half-orc and then turns to sprint out of the room. A second man dressed in leather stands up from behind the far end of the table and fires an arrow at Elitir, hitting her in the shoulder with a disturbing noise followed by an audible grunt. 3 dam

Actions!

Depending on initiative, I can only allow a return attack from the first 3 characters in the doorway. (Elitir, Pumfrey, and Zefarrel) The rest of you can still make an action, you just wont be able to get in an attack.

CP: This room fills out the rest of the rectangle of the main room.

Zefarrel moves quickly into the room, avoiding the flask "Watch out, flask on the ground!" & attacks the bowman with her staff if possible. If not, then the "body" thief.
initiative [1d6] = 1 (does she get a dex adjustment here?)
Attack [1d20] = 17

Edit: forgot to roll damage (in case needed)
damage [1d6] = 2

Elitir

Elitir rushes to attack whoever is closest. "Beware, there may be more!"

Long Sword to hit [1d20+1] = 12+1 = 13 damage [1d8+1] = 1+1 = 2

"och, come on... Let me through!" Finnigan hops from one foot to another, his battleaxe almost vibrating with anticipation.

As soon as he clears the doorway, he heads straight for the bowman behind the sofa...

”Well that escalated quickly. After you, after you...” says Sprig stepping to the side and waving in any more fighter-y types should they wish to enter. “Not really a front-line guy, myself.” He will ready his short sword, should its use be required.

Grossphil the Feeble

Grossphil sees Sprig letting people through but he too steps completely out of the way. He shrugs at Sprig and says "I'm definitely not a fighter either. The dwarf seems awfully eager, I say let him go through. If there ever comes a time where I have to fight, I'll know the rest of you died horrible deaths."

Grossphil makes sure he's back in the previous room so as to avoid combat and the charging dwarf. He'd only be a liability in combat anyway.

Living Room
Arrival Evening

Elitir rushes into the room as she draws her sword, ready to show the others her fighting prowess. Zefarrel doesn't hesitate to follow right behind, her staff at the ready. She warns those behind her about the flask on the floor. Finnigan pats his battle axe with anticipation, happy to see a few others parting the way for him to get into the action sooner.

Though the bravery and enthusiasm of the fighter types is commendable, their first encounter here proves to be a bit of a let-down. Seeing the willingness of the group to charge into action, the pair of men inside the room decide to make a hasty retreat. The first man simply runs through the black portal without hesitation. The bowman doesn't even bother knocking another arrow and quickly follows directly behind him.

As soon as the encounter begins, it is over again. The group looks around in the suddenly unoccupied room, wondering if they should continue making chase through the mysterious black portal.

After an acceptable let’s-see-if-the-flask-is-going-to-explode interval spent behind the cover of the doorway, Sprig will step gingerly over said object, eyeing it but not touching, and make his way over to the rifled desk. ”These guys seem to have been looking for something,” he says and begins his own careful search of the desk and its contents. He’ll look for traps before opening any drawers. Looking back over his shoulder he adds, ”Unless I miss my guess, those fellows weren’t inhabitants of this place, but looters. I don’t know if you noticed, but there don’t seem to be any boats tied up outside.... Where did they come from? There must be some other way on and off this island. Maybe they was dropped off by a genie or a giant bird. Or a very large flying broom.”

Finnigan's stomach lurches at the thought of flying on a broom or... a bird. "Boats is bad enough!"

He checks on Elitir's wound, "You all right? Doesn't look too bad, but thieves like that might tip their arrows with nasty things, so I'd clean it well, just in case. Let's make sure we're all ready to move on before we go chasing them. No sense in running headlong into a trap; it's much better to stumble into one after cautiously approaching it..."

OOC: Need to update signature with Elitir's damage, OM...

Mac

Rounding the corner to see what all the hubbub is about, Mac gasps when he sees the library. "Lovely! Simply lovely!" Mac gently makes his way past others into the room and turns full circle, soaking in the room.

"A proper reading room. How wonderful." He finally sees Elitir's wound and stops. "What happened? Was there a trap protecting the library?" Mac stoops down, casting his eyes around for the source of the trap.

Zefarrel: Elitir, do you require healing? Finnigan, does the arrow have any trace of poison on it?
If we were to chase, I am confident we would be walking into an ambush. They apparently knew we were here, and as our little friend said....how did they get here??? I don't think we ought to go through the portal they retreated through at all, unless it becomes necessary. And if we do, we should wait until their vigilance slackens and come up with a plan before doing so. There may be multiple ways to get to each room. For now, we should investigate this library, with someone guarding each portal.

"I am not in danger of dying soon, but would prefer healing before I walk into another ambush. Search the room for sure. It seems the black portals are the way others move around in here."

Grossphil the Feeble

Grossphil observed the abrupt skirmish from the safety of the other room, but he now delicately steps into the room and stands next to Mac to survey the room. He glances intently at the portal the thieves fled through for a long minute before speaking. "I vote we don't follow them, that just screams ambush. Perhaps if we take a different portal in the other room, we can find ourselves in a position to ambush them instead. What do you guys think?"

Living Room
Arrival Evening

Once the initial excitement of the mini skirmish and spotting others alive in this odd place wears off, nobody in the group proves to be willing to give chase. Likely a wise decision, giving the strange circumstances of the initial interaction.

Catching their breath again, the group goes about searching the room while Finnigan and Zefarrel patch up Elitir's shoulder as best they can. Grossphil stares into the black portal, suggesting another be used instead to avoid any surprise ambush.

Mac looks around for signs of a recent trap, but the only thing out of place is the lone potion bottle lying on the floor and the huge one-way window into the living room. He is rather excited to see the packed bookshelves, finding them filled with hundreds of general knowledge texts. There are tomes of every shape and size, and on all manner of subjects.

Sprig checks out the disheveled desk, finding nothing in the way of any new information. He does find plenty of normal parchment, ink, and other writing materials, but this desk seems like it was used for visitors, not by any one person. The tiny gnome contemplates where the others came from. His musings are enough to make the dwarf cringe.

The flask of clear liquid remains on the floor where it was left.

Elitir

"Does someone want to check out the flask of clear liquid? Not my specialty, but if no one else is going to I will."
