Expedition: Fingers/Ghostly Trial - Part II - 23 July 2021

Markd shrugs,

I guess we just gotta go in and start chopping. Then burning. And watch for that damned wight, like I said. Thing gave me the creeps.

Fingers sighs. "Why didn't I just stay in town? No one tries to kill you in town. Not often, anyway. And that redhead is kinda cute. Where was I? Oh, yeah. Skeletons. Guess we'd better do this. Someone get ready with a light, okay? And priests, get ready to do your priest things."

He gets ready to pour oil in front of the door, then realizes someone needs to open it. "Um, who wants to open the door?"

Marullus: Does the door open into the hall, or away from it? I'm trying to figure out if we can jerry-rig a remote door opening mechanism, like opening it with a rope or something.

[Marullus]

The doors swing open into the room, not the hallway.

[Zhym]

Fingers sighs. And sneezes. This place is dusty. "Bandy? Markd? Which one of ya wanna kick the door down?"

Markd will.

[Zhym]

"'Kay," says Fingers, pouring oil in front of the door. "Keep out of the oil, and when the door's open, get back so we can light 'em up without lighting you up too."

Bandy pulls out his new longsword and readies himself for the task of killing undead...

Fingers pours out the oil on the floor. Markd boot-stomps the door as hard as he can to kick it open, but it just shutters in its frame. A bit chagrinned, he then turns the knob and finds the door swings open. The light from the candelabra spills into the room beyond - the grinning skulls of skeletal soldiers standing in waiting ranks only a few feet away!

Fingers lights the oil on the floor as Markd retreats backwards. Sprinkles whines and retreats to the rear with his tail tucked, getting behind Allmond. There is a clanking of boots, bones, and metal as the skeletons march out into the hallway. The flames scorch them, fine cracks appearing in their bony limbs. They come at the party, two abreast.

Front rank attack normally. Second rank attacks with -1. Third rank (Allmond) cannot attack with melee weapons.

I rolled an attack for Fingers using the macro for the spear, forgetting that he no longer has it:

Spear +1 (melee) (THAC0 18): [1d20+2] = 12+2 = 14, [1d6+2] = 5+2 = 7

He can't attack from the second row with his sword, I presume, so can we apply that roll to a bow shot? Or do you want me to re-roll?

He can hit from the second row with his sword - we'll apply it to that. Please re-roll for his sword. (Interesting point, though - I'd not charge the -1 penalty for a spear.)

Fingers is currently in the front rank because he lit the oil. He needs to win initiative to switch places before the skeletons catch him.

Fingers's action has him pouring the oil and explicitly asking someone else to light it. He shouldn't be, and would never allow himself to be, in the first rank.
