He lifts his dagger, ready to strike--- but then stops. Madness, sinful thoughts in the darkness.
The creepiest part about this is that, like watching a horror movie, I see the near-death but the character is completely oblivious.

Cool, that's the atmosphere I was aiming for! I'm glad it came through.

Oh Ballar Uh, you lovable scamp!

I'll have an update (including any overheard things for Zaent) tomorrow (er, today I guess, as it's after midnight. I guess I need to go to bed :D)

So, do we wait and eavesdrop in case we can overhear some info, or do we interrupt them, capture the guards and interrogate them - alongside the chained figure?

I vote for eavesdropping. There doesn't seem to be an immediate need to intervene. If something starts to happen, Mathias can cast Suggestion on them--probably better than attempting an assassination attempt from up a slope covered in loose debris we won't be able to descend quickly or quietly.

Another vote for eavesdropping. Once we kill them, we've lost our stalking horses.
We want them alive and unaware of us when the big bad turns up. ;)

I love the idea of a Suggestion. Can we implant: "Monologue about all your plans like an evil villain?"

On a more practical note, "Speak all your plans and intentions aloud" for the next six rounds?

Given that it can be several sentences, I like "come up here and tell us your plans and intentions". That way if it does come to violence, we don't have to get down the rocky slope first.

Most of us have ranged weapons, they are in light, we are in darkness - I guess we are in advantage even if we don't go down the slope!

"Speak all your plans and intentions aloud" for the next six rounds?" sounds great!

That's true. With the suggestion they won't be aware of our presence and won't realize anything unusual is happening. Can we make assassination attempts with ranged weapons? It looks like we can.

Looks like we can, that's what I forgot back at the church...

Do we want to beguile all three? The chained figure may have useful information, but it's possible we may reveal something to the guards as well.

EDIT: How far are we from them? It sounds from the description like we're relatively close. Within thirty feet?

I think we should try to pick out a "leader", the one person who possibly knows "more".

The rules aren't specific on whether it's possible to assassinate with a ranged weapon.
To backstab, an assassin
must catch an opponent unaware of his presence (achieve
surprise), usually by using move silently and hide in shadows.
Assassins may also roll to instantly kill a victim of a backstab
(discussed later). When backstabbing, an assassin will receive an
attack bonus of +4 and will multiply all damage by 2. The
damage multiplier applies even if the instant assassination roll
fails.

<...>

Assassination: Assassins may attempt to kill a target instantly.
The assassin must attempt and succeed in a backstab and
achieve surprise on his opponent. The base chance of success is
50% against a victim of equal level or monster HD to the
assassin. This probability is raised or lowered by 5% for each
level or HD the target is above or below the assassin. For
example, if a 5th level assassin attempts to assassinate a 7th level
character, the probability of success goes down to 40%. If that
same 5th level assassin attempts to assassinate a 3 HD monster,
the probability goes up to 60%.
The constant talk about backstabbing implies a dagger or something, not backstabbing with, like, an arrow 8-) But it seems logical to me to take an assassination attempt with a bow.

True, but the rules for the Thief backstabbing doesn't say they need to be in melee either, just that they need to catch the target unaware. The only implication I can find that says either assassination attempts or backstabbing attempts need to be done in melee is in the name of the ability itself.

As far as a leader, it seems we only see these three. I don't think we'll be able to sneak by them, so we need to either kill them or try to get info from them.

Suggestion sounds great.

Mr. Kent, can we sneak past these three? Is there enough darkness to cover the first 4 of us?

My concern with sneaking is that we've been described as having "a steep slope of dirt and loose stone" between us and them. If we want I can try to sneak past, find the leader, and cast Suggestion on him, but he may be better able to save vs. spells. We only really need one of these guys to fail. If we try to bring everybody somebody's likely to fail a Move Silently check. But if I'm misreading and we can bypass them, I agree we should!

There is sufficient darkness--the only light in this massive cave is coming from one guard's torch. The debris of the slope is indeed very loose and rocky.

You are ~80 feet from the trio (two guards + the chained, hooded figure). You're at the top of "steep slope" arrow, and they are directly below, to the right of the altar.

In that case, do we want to try sneaking past them? My only concern is the loose rock making noise--perhaps somebody could Silence us?

Suggestion has a 30' range, so the caster does need to sneak closer.
You are right - if we move together at once, we are more likely to fail our move silently checks. But the caster needs some back-up as well, so probably one more person sneaking along with him, with the others ready to attack at the top of the slope.

Edit:
or the back-up sneaker/warrior can move even further, to get in the back of the soldiers:
