Tratiln heads to the inn and enjoys a quiet meal and drink with his companions, with a few weighty items on his mind. He wonders how long Elwyn will just wait around for them to show up. And what about Bargle? Surely he wasn't just sitting back and letting time fly by him as well. Heading back to his room, he studies Magic Missile for a couple hours before heading off to bed. In the morning, Tratiln rises early and heads down for a brief meal before setting out, meeting up with Fr. Varis and getting more information and letting him know of their past few adventures.

Innana the fighter

"Well, arm't we a bunch of rum dums today?" Innana joins the group for breakfast."Every single one of you look like you are thinking way too hard. Don't you know that is dangerous before you let the coffee settle in and start to take effect? "

Innana orders her coffee, and looks at her bed headed friends. "What's in the plans for the day?" Innana looks at Thordin who was doing a good job of ignoring her. Thordin, when you have time I was wondering if I may have some private words with you today."

"Aye, you may. I was going to talk to the Captain about the problems around here; come with me and we can talk."

Marodin will take a quiet dinner and retire early to get some much needed rest. He'll let Semele go to visit her family if she pleases.

When the next morning arrives, Marodin will take Semele to be fit for plate mail. Then he'll head over to hear what Father Varis has to say.
Marodin is happy to put his rowan shield to good use checking the gems and jewels for possible magic effects.

Bregalad the elf

Bregalad would like to accompany the group when they visit Father Varis. If there is time beforehand, he will take his shield to the armorer for repair.

"Plan?" Saul looks over to Innana. "Well, we should cash in those jewels, meet up with Father Varis to see what's new and get some gear before we get on our way again."

Bregalad the elf

Bregalad had forgotten how new and disorienting this city was for him upon his first visit. He wonders if Innana is feeling the same way now.

"Threshold has so many things to offer, my lady, but it is easy to miss them. For myself, I will bring my shield to the armorer for repair, and then purchase spell-scribing materials. And then, most of all, I am excited to search for a mentor for my magical studies. There is Bethany the Bold, a retired magic-user, who runs an inn not far from here. Maybe it will be her!"

"How about you? What is it you would like to do in this fair city? Surely, there must be something here to draw your interest?"

Innana the fighter:

Innana blows on her hot coffee and takes a noisy sip. "My Lady, huh? Innana smiles so big that she is sure the person behind her can see the edges of her smile. "It has been a while since anyone called me a lady. Are you trying to get on my good side, young man? Please, just call me Innana. I gave up being a lady the day I decided to lead the life of a warrior.
Don't waste your good manners with me. Besides, I would not know how to act if you all expected me to be a lady all the time."

Innana takes another noisy sip of her coffee, and puts it down on the table. "I was hoping to get some potions while in town. I hear there may be some good potions for a warrior such as myself." Innana looks at Bregalad, or perhaps they have Lady potions to enhance one to become a lady? We would just have to lock the potion up and make sure that Saul did not pour the potion into Lanny's drink."

Maybe I can help you with that shield of yours. "You treasure wood chips and metal chunks as if it carried your soul inside. Why do you treasure it so?"

"If you are interested in potions Innana I suggest you ask at the temple when we go there to see Father Varis. You may also check the apothecary later."

"Hahah! Alright, just Innana it is, then! But I must say that there have been times when I have witnessed you being most ladylike -- wearing a dress, and with ribbons in your hair!"

"Ah, yes, and this....." Bregalad raps the crumpled metal shield. "It is a parting gift from an old friend -- Solon the dwarf, the only one to live among the elves of our woods. It was he who made me realize that the elvish ways may not be enough to survive these changing times. It is for that reason that I am here with you today, so that I may one day bring home knowledge that will protect my people."

Tratiln will, after breakfest, head to the temple to see Farther Varis with the rest of the party. During the day, he'll also make time to inquire about any potions from the temple and apthocary, pick up more scribing supplies, make sure his horse gets a good brushing and new shoes, purchase an extra shield to carry on his horse, and make sure he has some time to study magic missile as well.

Innana the fighter:
"It seems that dwarfs have been a part of saving both our lives. Just can't seem to live without them". Innana winks at Thordin.

Innana thinks for a moment looking out out into space, "I guess the best way to explain why you will see me in dresses is because I like hanging out with the women and children of the villages. I always have. The only problem is that they feel uncomfortable with me if I am in my warrior garb. Women, and children seem to be more at ease when I am in a dress with ribbons in my hair. I guess it would be right to say that a dress on me is a of costume of sorts. I find the long skirts an excellent way to hide numerous blades. Does that sound like a lady?

I find the life of a lady terribly boring. My Mother tried her hardest to get me to be a lady, only to find me sneaking out to play swords with my brothers."

"I guess I will be meeting you all at the temple to see Father Varis. Thordin and I will meet most of you there." Innana gets up, and leaves behind Thordin.

Thordin the dwarf will make his way back to the guard Captain. He wants to question him about the local troubles that caused a dwarf to go weaponless in a human town...

Flaurmont 1, AC 1000

It has been almost a month since the companions first joined into a band of adventurers, and they find themselves in Threshold once again. This time, however, it is to a far different reception. There is a dark air over the town, and the inhabitants within walk about with brisk step and a cold glare to the eye. Guards are everywhere. At least twice as many as any companion can remember; perhaps the Baron has been pressing citizens into the Watch, or else lending them soldiers from his Keep.

Thordin and Innana make their way to the Captain of the Watch. Captain Arthol is a wiry man, approaching the end of his middle years, with greying hair and a drooping mustache. He is engaged in paperwork when the two adventurers enter, and bids them wait a moment while he finishes, before enquiring as to their names and motives.

The rest of the companions make their way to the Temple and are soon ushered in to the office of Father Varis, who greets them warmly. "My friends," he exclaims, "you look as though you have grown in age and stature since last I saw you! Can I assist you in any manner?"

Lanny the elf

Lanny smiles and nods his head in acknowledgement of Father Varis.

"You are right, Father Varis, it has been a few weeks since last we spoke. And my, how things have changed around here in that short time... Captain Quintas informed us of the situation on Fogor's Isle. Two of our group went this morning to speak to Captain Arthol in the hopes of getting more information about the recent events..."

Knowing that Thordin and Innana would be gathering those details, Lanny shifts gears to speak about Elwyn.

"Have you heard anything recently from the men of Kelven who set out to try to find the location of Elwyn's hideout? As it turns out, when we returned to the caves where Aleena was found, we encounted what can only be described as a "Magic Mouth", which divined the answer to a question that we asked of it about the whereabouts of his hideout. I honestly do not know if it is true, but we wanted you to have this information."

Lanny proceeds to recount the answer provided by the Magic Mouth:
The Magic Mouth in the caves provided us with this information about the location of Elwyn's hideout:

"Travel to Penhaligon and seek the assistance of a mortal woman calling herself Selfa Erinsdotter. She will lead you to your destination. Beware of two things! Things are not what they seem in Penhaligon. Trust no one. Next, the Drowned Maiden has awaken after her centuries of sleep and stalks both banks of the river, clutching both man and beast in her icy embrace."

Tratiln adds to Lanny's information, "Yes, we were hoping more infomation about Elwyn or Bargle had come up in the meantime in our absence that we could possibly act on."

Tratiln will also make it a point, when the time is right, to recount what they have done so far in the tower and recount the great sense of evil of that place. "We had thought about possibly using it as a base of operations but I feel now, due to the evil nature of the place, we shouldn't. I was just wondering what you think about it?"

"I am Thordin and this is Innana. I have come to inquire about this situation that seems to be so dire, so as to require me to leave my weapon at the gate. When I heard this I waxed wroth, and seethed beneath my pleasant exterior. Only the assurance of your most honorable guardsmen dissuaded violence."

Thordin's eyes flash.

"My vexation requires an outlet. Tell me of this worry you have, and let me see if we can find a solution."

Saul perks up at the mention of leaving the tower.

"Now, now, let's not be hasty. We haven't cleared the lower levels yet, we don't know what's there, ture but what better way of making sure a site doesn't lapse back into evil than to have good folk living in it. Besides, I'm sure the people of Jessup could use a fort to defend them of all the dangers we've seen."

Father Varis

The priest frowns slightly. "We have yet to have heard from our scouts. Whether this is because of this distances involved, or ambush, or something more sinister I cannot say. As to the voice you heard, and the veracity of its words, I cannot answer you specifically. However, keep in mind that magic created it, and, as a general rule, magic that does not flow from the Immortals is not to be trusted. No offense to the spellcasters here, of course, but why do you think that the Patriarch has forbidden the practice of magic within the borders of the town! It is because that by and large, magic-users and their ilk are subtle and devious and more interested in power than holding back the forces of Chaos!"

This seems to be a subject about which Father Varis is passionate. "The Tower you speak of is a good example of this! It sounds as if the former owner consorted with demons or other fell creatures, was ensnared and met his just end. I would counsel you, my friends, to raze the structure to the ground and invite the church in to consecrate the fallen stones."

He shakes his head. "You asked about the Iron Ring and this mess on Fogor's Isle. I don't know much, as it is a temporal rather than spiritual matter, but just after you left a number of bodies -- some a year or two old, some recent -- were found in a well in the Old Mill. All bore the marks of torture and ritual execution, and each had clamped about their neck an iron collar, which is both a sign of slavery and of this group calling itself the Iron Ring. More importantly, all were members of the local Thieves Guild, which had slowly been losing members over the years -- to violence, it now seems, as opposed to desertion. Now the two groups are fighting it out on the Isle, the Guard is leery of entering and the whole town is on edge."

Captain Arthol

"Aha!" he exclaims. It appears his lugubrious look does not influence his personality. "You are Thordin Grymsson, one of the adventurers who returned Aleena's body to us! And you, my lady, I do not recognize, but you must be a worthy warrior to travel in such company! I welcome you back to Threshold, and apologize for the need to confiscate all weapons, even those from fighters such as yourselves who have proven their worth to this city."

He strokes his mustache. "However! Dark times indeed have fallen upon the city, and I will tell you what I can. Two weeks ago, give or take, another band of intrepid adventurers were hired to clear out the warren of large insects that laired within the Old Mill on Fogors Isle. In the process they discovered an old well shaft, at the bottom of which were heaped two dozen or more corpses, all victims of this gang of thugs and drug addicts known as the Iron Ring. All were also members of the local Thieves Guild. Now, say what you will about thieves and their ilk, but it is a sad truth that in much of the world an uneasy peace exists between the government and these organizations. In exchange for tight control over their members and their activities we typically turn a blind eye to the existence of the Guild. Not that we allow them to function with impunity, mind you! It is more a case of the devil you know being better than the devil you don't, you see!"

He pauses for a moment and collects his thoughts. "Now, this Iron Ring is thought to be if not sponsored then allowed to function by the Black Eagle Barony, the lands ruled by the Duke's mad cousin. We have no proof of this, of course, but they are as vicious and mean a group of hoodlums as you could ever meet, and it seems they are making a push into Threshold to establish dominance. The local Guild likes this not, nor the fact that its members are being slain, or worse. So they are fighting for control of Fogor's Isle. The Baron has ordered us to sit back and let them bleed each other dry, then we shall move in and clear the island of them both for good."
