Olleg, Dwarf

"Well I don't think we can just walk away now!" Olleg responds to Mortar, while making another attempt at piercing the creature's natural armor.

Vennar

Vennar points to the Ogre and looks back and forth with the Aspis and the Ogre before giving up and agreeing to head back.

Mortar nods at Olleg.

"Yes. Agreed. I suppose we can't stop now."

He scurries across the floor to retrieve his dagger, stabbing at the monster again if he gets the opportunity.

Dagger Melee Attack [1d20]=16 Dam [1d4]=1

I am still just stumped as to why the ogre would break the ladder in the first place.

A reaction based on the group deciding to split, half 'returning to wait upstairs' and the other half going with orcs & ogre to inspect slave market. I guess they didn't want you to sneak back and climb the ladder to access the Audience chamber without them knowing.

at least that was the GM's thinking at the time.

Tunnels: Ladder Cave

Team Alpha

Not sure where Brick gets any charging bonus, but he gets a hefty strike in -11hp (medium sized for damage consideration). It use only strike that wounds though Olleg barges into it shield first which unsteadies it further adding an increased penalty to its attack routine.

Aspis: broadsword vs [1d20-3]=6-3=3 [2d4]=6 [1d20-3]=10-3=7 [2d4]=6

It swashes about missing all, nearly falling into a pit. Jacupo jumps in after Esther but there is nothing he can do for her. Rogger backs up the fighters and they can gang up on the creature.

next attacks Olleg Mortar & Brick.

Sure, I get that.

But it still seems like an extreme measure to take if the ladder is used frequently.

Which also made me think that they might not use it frequently, suggesting there may be noting up there to find.

Or, perhaps I am simply looking to deeply into such things.

Brick

Brick attacks again.

Bastard Sword [1d20+4]=2+4=6 to hit [2d4+5]=5+5=10 damage

I thought it might be a charge as the round before he didn't move up to join Olleg, he threw one of his javelins. No big deal, why I mentioned it, in case you didn't think it was a charge.

Ladder Cave.
Team Alpha

The entire round goes by with only Olleg maintaining any momentum, his shield bash further pushing the staggering Aspis but despite his best efforts and the ladder as a trip hazard, it manages to avoid any pitfalls.

Jacupo climbs out the pit he jumped in, leaving Esther's body behind. He wards the cave entrance.

continue attacks please.

Team Alpha

Olleg: 26/33hp
Brick: 15/18hp
Mortar: 7/10hp
Esther: deceased
Jacupo: 7/15hp

Tunnels:

Aspis Cave
Team Bravo

Both Galadria & Vennar decline to trade their shields for the Aspis' own hand made (if they have hands, maybe leg made) wooden shield and the unknown potion. With Edel insisting their presence is not required and using that as a way to get rid of the Ogre temporarily (with a view to permanently perhaps?), the two clerics take their leave, exiting the Aspis Cave mindful of the trigger wire laid across the passage threshold.

"Escort them upstairs Khanak, we shall no stray too far from here." says one Orc. The Ogre takes his leave, the Aspis guards holding their long proboscis with pinched fingers as he departs. Maybe there is just not enough pheromone to ever mask an Ogre's odour. The Aspis drone-warriors turn back to their mundane duties, the 'trader' reluctantly stuffing the unwanted trade potion back into a pouch. They click tongues and chitter, beginning a rhythmic beat that sounds rather like two halves of an empty coconut shell clapped together to mimic hoof hooves. The four Aspis crafting nod and work to the beat, entertaining themselves while they work.

The Ogre walks back up the tunnel as far as the slippery steps, gesturing the two clerics Galadria & Vennar to go ahead of him as he walks behind. "Your friends are upstairs in the reception. I will take you to the gatehouse to wait there." he says.

actions for Vennar
"Ok, please take us along your usual patrol route - that should suffice for my report"
says Edel.

The two charmed Orcs nod and gesture for Durrant & Edel to follow, ignoring the passage that leads to the Temple access in favour of the passage that goes south. The guard Aspis that sniffed folk and allowed access accompanies the quartet also. Once more, at the threshold to this passage a thin trip wire trap has been set up to snare intruders, activating a large sticky-sweet smelling net that is folded into a niche above the entrance archway.

"We pass through another of their caves and by the old sewer cistern. Then we patrol the channels towards the guard posts and reserved markets." talkative Orc says proudly.

The other Orc strikes a firebrand to provide light.

The passage, another support struts reinforced earthen tunnel curves about 30'ft in length before opening into a rough sided cave about 30'ft square. An exit passage is in the south wall, a veritable stench emanating from that direction.

This next cave is reasoned to be some kind of food storage or kitchen. A 5’ wide path runs through the center of this room from exit to exit. To either side of the path is a narrow slit trench about 3'ft wide and 5'ft deep. Beyond the trenches are piles of dried and bloody carcasses and mounds of rotting vegetation. A small frying pan is set up nearby, burning rancid cooking oil, slow heated by a candle. The Aspis casually digs a long skewer into a nearby pile of rotting vegetation impaling two fat, wriggling Rot Grubs on the end. It then deep fries the snacks in the pan, offering the crispy morsels to the character guests to eat.

Hung around the cave from stakes driven into the walls are strips of leather skins taken from gator type reptiles and pelts from recognisable animals; badgers, fox, wild dogs and more alarmingly, stretched across a cane frame by the carcass pile is the distinct skinned torso; belly button to neck and the eyeless face of a bearded humanoid, female by the looks of the sagging breasts that mark her gender.

Aspis Icon [1d6]=1

Actions please for Durrant & Edel .

Health status & conditions:

Galadria: 16/17hp
Vennar: 12/19hp
Durrant: 7/7hp
Edel: 11/11hp (14/14hp with Pallas the Owl:
3/3hp)

Edel

The elf is tempted to try the deep fried rot grubs, but first he tries to remember if he knows anything about the nature of those vermin, whether they are poisonous or not, and if in fact they can be ingested if properly cooked.

Is this an Int check? Deep fried rot grub ok-ish? (Int 17) [1d20]=10

The skinned torso catches his attention, reminding him of the danger and horrors of the place they are in.

He does approach it however, to take a closer look... Could this be the iconic Elwita..?

"Why do you have dealings with the Aspis?" - he inquired as he observed the gruesome scene - "Why have you decided to engage in trading instead of treating them as... Hmm... Opponents? I am curious" - he asks his orc 'friend'

Tunnels:

Ladder Cave
Team Alpha

Rogger: Morningstar melee: [1d20]=20 [2d4]=2

Hurrah! Between Rogger clubbing the Aspis soundly, Brick hacking and Mortar applying a little 'coup de grace', the tough Aspis drone-warrior is slain and its body falls into the grain pit.

Rogger & Jacupo can bust themselves for a few minutes, burying the Aspis body and that of Esther's beneath a layer of grain and lentil beans or castaway leaves.

It leaves Mortar, Brick & Olleg to consider next actions and choices.

checking the Aspis; its shields are common hand made from a strange lightly grained wood, painted with gaudy colours and abstract streaks. Each broadsword are crafted with serrated edges, very much like a rough saw and fitted into leather wrapped bone hilts.

The narrow passage at the rear of the Ladder Cave curves away southeastward into darkness. Your frantic melee not attracting any interest from that direction. The passage back towards the slippery staircase is also dark and quiet.

Next Actions Mortar Brick Olleg

Brick: 15/18hp

Mortar breathes a sigh of relief.

"Good shot Rog! I wasn't sure we could best that thing without a bunch more coming to help it."

"Brick? Are you still here too? That magic powder should be wearing off any time now."

The Gnome looks up at the hatch again and then to the broken ladder. "I don't fancy trying to get up there on a busted ladder, so why don't we head back towards the others to see if we can figure out where everyone is at the moment?"

Olleg, Dwarf

"I suppose that's what I get for sharing my mead! That ungrateful insect was a tough bugger, though," says Olleg, looking down at the spot where the Aspis is now buried. He then takes a quick moment to check over his gear. Once he is confident everything is in order, Olleg replies, "Aye, you're both right. The sooner we rejoin the others, the better."
