Fydmar
Do you think the two arrows meant the second barrow?
After saying thus, he checks the stonework in an attempt to determine if the blocks will fall on their heads if they attempt to break though.

Marcel Gerard Desrosiers
Gerard alternates between watching the progress of their companions and peering into the murky gloom which surrounds them. "Frightful places, these mounds," he remarks. "But exciting, I daresay. Even my old bones warm at the prospect of ancient treasures awaiting discovery."

Moriartus
"Indeed, Mr. Fydmar. The arrows likely indicate the second mound to the east. However, what is it that sailors say ... ah, yes, any port in a storm? We don't know what we'll find there. At least here, we have the high ground."
He nods solemnly at Marcel's comment as they both gaze into the mist, on alert for any abominations of the Moor. "Yes, rather frightful, are they not? Still they entice the young and foolish, or in our case, the old and slightly less foolish."
He chuckles quietly in the gloomy light of the torches.

There is a strong possibility that the stones above the landing will be loosened by the vibrations of hammering on the sealed portal. We should shore up the blocks with supporting timbers. It wouldn't be helpful to have 3 hammering away. I ought to watch as the other 2 go at it to see if I can catch a collapse before it happens. And to help place timbers if we have such available.

Re: Barrow Mounds: Under the Vulture's Shadow.
The dwarven expertise of Fydmar casts a gloomy forecast over the entrance stability. There is a large boulder overhanging the entrance seal. Shoring it up might be a good move but you have little at hand to do that, planks and scaffolding staves are in short supply. You can describe other attempts to shore up the possible cave in or lessen the risk.Mr. Dougal, Fydmar, Duval, and Rickford take turns with the sledgehammers against that seal. After Mr. Fydmar assesses the structure and appropriate method first, of course."
You have one sledgehammer I believe, so can take three ten minute turns, if you want to take the risk to hammer through the seal. I have the instruction above which I can follow as Dougal, Duval then Rickford hammering, with Fydmar bracing the rock.
While you consider options, those posted on guard around the mound report 'all is quiet as the grave'.
Dougal roll me a 1d6 please.
Moriartus roll me two 1d6's please.
Fydmar roll me a 4d6 vs strength please.
Cadeweed & Marcel enjoy the view.
such a nice picture inclusive of all the characters

I think Cadeweed needs a pipe.

Re: Barrow Mounds: Under the Vulture's Shadow.
Dougal can you add a 4d6 vs dexterity please.

Re: Barrow Mounds: Under the Vulture's Shadow.
I like even the pic has the fighter in a kilt. It is my new favourite. It is from the official pdf.
Barrow Mounds, southwest of Helix, Duchy of Aerik.
18.55pm. Windy, light rain.
Light: Visibility poor, restricted to 60'ft radius. Lantern (Rickford) Lantern (Duval).
Effects: none.
The labourers set to, Dougal stripping down bare chested, in his tartan kilt to hammer at the stone seal. Which each pound, stone splinters chip away from the door, with each pound the rock above the lintel is loosened free of the structure, with each pound the echo is carried on the wind to announce your presence.
Everybody braces for trouble, the lookouts watching the incline, Fydmar shouldering the boulder. Dougal sledges away on the landing at the bottom of the dug out steps. The first to the task. Falling gravel and mud alerts him to the danger above and he dives for the steps as the rock falls to crush him.
for passing Fydmar strength check, I dropped a d6 from the damage and passing the Dex check gains you half damage.
Dougal -4hp
Luckily the stone can be rolled a few inches and Dougal, worse for wear but not crushed or broken of bones, could be hauled free. While Fydmar and Rickford lever the rock, everyone else is hushed. Duval arms himself by the entrance to protect those below.
Groans come from the trapped ranger. They are echoed by mimicking voices from shuffling figures in the mist. They lurch past the firebrands tossed at the foot of the grassy knoll. Cadeweed counts at least half a dozen gaunt and decayed figures. This group wander around anti-clockwise, fading into the mist to re-emerge in the flickering light of the next torch. Behind them, more stragglers limp, each moving a few steps then stopping to cock their heads listening, sniffing the air, tasting your fear. One takes a few casual faltering steps up the incline towards the sheltering halfling and Two-Birds.
So, Dougal is trapped below the rockfall but may be freed without incurring further injury subject to the rock being rolled free. Fydmar please roll another strength check to move it. I am adding Rickford's help as a bonus to your roll. So [4d6-4] vs str. If you succeed, Dougal is freed, failure means he cusses a few painful words as he stays pinned.
the zombies are not presently alerted to your actual location though obviously drawn to the area. This could give you a round to gain surprise upon them if you wished to act now.
You could always wait to roll the rock away once the zombies walk away in case a failed check causes him to scream out.
Or any other strategem.
actions and a group initiative roll from the first poster please.

Re: Barrow Mounds: Under the Vulture's Shadow.
Moriartus
Moriartus crouches low next to Duval, watching as the vanguard of the zombie procession enters their torch light. Rapidly attempting to assess the situation, he notices the zombies frequently tilting their heads.
To listen ... and to smell.
Pausing momentarily, which for what he was about to do, felt like an eternity, he carefully unties the pouch of cigars from his belt and sets it on the ground before him, opened to show the fruit of his most recent vice.
He plucks a scrap of dry cloth from his tinderbox and silently lights it using the flame in Duval's lantern. With a wistful glance at the tobacco and an inaudible sigh, he proceeds to ignite the small pile of cigars, then the pouch itself. Finally, he stuffs the lit cloth into the pouch like a crude wick.
Gingerly lifting the smoldering, aromatic pouch from its base, Moriartus lobs it high into the air like a grenade, aiming a few feet into the mist ahead of the zombies.
Initiative: [1d6]=1
Cigar smoke bomb: [1d20]=5
Dexterity (9): [4d6]=9

Fydmar
Pauses for a moment as Moriartus throws his "bomb" & then puts finger to lips (shh sign) to the ranger & then attempts to lift the rock (w/Rickford) high enough, so that Dougal can get out.
str check w/help [4d6-4]=14-4=10
yay

Cadeweed
Cadeweed stays low to the ground (not like that is to hard for him anyway) with his sling and bullet ready in case the zombies are not tricked by the smoke bomb.

Barrow Mounds, southwest of Helix, Duchy of Aerik.
19.00pm. Windy, light rain.
Light: Visibility poor, restricted to 60'ft radius. Lantern (Rickford) Lantern (Duval).
Effects: none.
At the foot of the dugout entrance, Fydmar and Rickford lever the boulder from crushing Dougal further. He is able to scramble free. The boulder covers the bottom half of the sealed door but you can continue, extending the hirelings terms and a few extra minutes to make the shortfall of Dougal's attempts.
Though that may wait as those around the mound try to hide from the stalking zombies.
Moriartus tries a distraction to lead them away, tossing his fragrant tobacco in a burning pouch down the incline and into another area of stony ground. But the zombies, though drawn to the burnt offering soon crush it underfoot in their wanderings and while most continue to circle the mound, you can see by the light of your thrown firebrands that a couple lurch forward up the knoll. The pair are soon followed by a couple more, who scramble on clawed hands and bony knees to climb up the steep slope to the circular stone barrow.
A conflict looks inevitable and the hirelings poise for action. Duval draws his bow, taking a bead upon some hoary grey head. Rickford, double handed with short swords.
With Fydmar and Dougal pairing up, Marcel with Moriartus and on the far side, Two-Birds with Cadeweed. Each pair taking a quadrant of the barrow mound. Beyond bushes and bracken, there is little to shield behind though a little higher ground is on the crown of the structure.
Surprise though is still in your favour, roll actions and any attacks please.
