Chapter Five - Tuesday: After the meeting

"Good point, I will do my best to avoid that, but that aside, I curious what a single Officer is here, usually that are with families or we are told to buddy up. Can anyone see his rank?"

I am sure I can find out anything you want to know about them, once I have had a drink or two.

Nālani looks up at Pranit through her eyelashes with a small smile - the "Lady Di" look.

Your pet could attract many people, given the right circumstances. Where did you get her?

Before you respond, I want to be with my family eating my moms breakfast."

Ah! That is a very honourable wish, to be with family. It is not one I can share, my parents are long gone, and I have not seen my brother since I left home.

Ah, but I do have family. I have Hoshiko. I am afraid I do not like to share her breakfast though. She does not cook, she prefers her meals warm and squeaking.

Hoshiko a pet? No, I am the pet. She permits me to be. Nālani smiles fondly.

I won her from a bad man in a game of chance when she was small, merely a helpless thing to torment. The stakes were very high, I spent some time paying off the favours I promised to raise them, but I could not have done otherwise.

Takes a bottle of the local saki from the waitress Imelda. He pours a glass.

"My favourite places have not been visited yet. Pine forested snow capped mountains or berg filled bays glinting from the last rays of sunset, foam crested high waves which cascade upon sandy beaches. New worlds offer hope for settlers pioneering new frontiers.

Big tec and conglomerates claim ownership of lands they don't live upon. Just dig and mine, trawl and deforest. The peace brokered by the muzzle of a gun.

He downs his drink and pours again.

"Did I tell you I am still crafting my heirloom? A broad double-headed axe, forged from fine graded ore. I am still sourcing the shaft wood. Maybe Ash hardwood with a deep grain. Then to get it etched with olde Swedish runic blessings or Viking curses."

He gives a warrior like roar "aargh". "Let us hope our boarding experiences are not put to the mettle just yet."

I grew up in the Belt, it is all I know really. Perhaps one day I will go down a Well and walk a world, but I do not dream of it.

There is a casino on Siwan I like so much I do not even mind if I lose there. Oh, and there is a club here that has the best holo, and the most fashion-forward crowd, it is the place to see the new. But rocks are only stopovers. The void is my home, and I look forward to taking the Queen back there.

Wood is very expensive out here. Perhaps we will get a contract to a dirtball and you can find your own tree. Ah!, but how can you cut it until you have made the axe?

The officer, looks nervous - he has a red flower on his table, and a posh bottle of booze with two glasses (presently unfilled); and has a small box in this left hand pocket that he keeps removing and putting back in between checking his hand-held. He appears to be awaiting someone.

After the neighbouring table finishes Desert the band announces a song "By Request" and at the end the room goes quiet and Naval Officer "Pops the Question". With the answer being apparently affirmative the band strikes up an energetic dance number which the Naval Officer (and new Fiancée) bounce to in a somewhat un-coordinated fashion.

Pranit will enjoy the moment and ask Imelda to place a unopened bottle of wine from 'A fellow offocer who served' on the table.

Nālani watches the little drama play out with interest. When the lady says "yes" she smiles Ah!, how romantic! It is nice to see happy people.

I think you have chosen the venue well Mr Kilrane-Bewoor. A place where we can sit as a group to talk and eat together, with entertainment as well. And, see, a good omen for us too! They are beginning a new venture together with great happiness. And bad dancing to mainstream music, but that makes them perfect for each other.
Perhaps we too will dance poorly together and be happy.

The evening progresses. The conversation from the other tables is domestic and (in one case) salacious - only one couple talk about the city and that appears to be because they got stuck when the road by the hotel was closed because of a dead body. The Happy Couple head off - tipping the waitress and band heavily - before disappearing up the corridor towards the more up-market entertainments venues.

And the restaurant starts to empty as the other patrons go to find their (or someone's) bed.

A quiet and amiable evening.

Arnwulf

Returns to the Queen of the Belt. He has moved all his stuff aboard and expects to be working on site until the ship is ready to fly.

He can carry on with physical inspections and maintenance duties during the next day while most others attend the shareholder meeting.

When the evening at the Spaceman's Promise ends Nālani offers: I am going on to a club, if anyone wants to dance clumsily to better music.

Where she goes depends on whether she has company. If anyone takes up the invitation she goes to trendy nightclub, if alone she heads for a small avant-garde arty place.


Edit:

Whichever venue she is only intending to see and be seen, not party the night away - a weak beer or soft drink, a little dancing, some socialising/networking then home.
