Gull's Landing
Re: Gull's Landing
Mave
As the stump rubs her cheek, she reaches up and grasps it firmly with her right hand and then bites down as hard as she can on the stump, drawing blood.
"Brother, I will never ask you for mercy. And I will ask none of father for you. His judgement upon you and the others," and with that she stalks from the dungeon.

“The world breaks everyone, and afterward, many are strong at the broken places.” ~ Ernest Hemingway, A Farewell to Arms
Once he had been her brother, but his actions had broken that bond. Tasting his blood as he cried out in pain gave her a sense of satisfaction that both comforted and repelled her. Would the black sheep of the Gallowhawk family be displaced by one even more dark? Taking a kerchief from her pocket she wiped the blood from her lips. The world breaks everyone, she thought, some are made stronger at the broken places but many others are shattered like fragile glass and can never be repaired. The black sheep of the family Gallowhawk walked up the stone steps into the light.
----------------------------------
The light in the courtyard of the Gallowhawk compound shone down on Commander Torvik Shadowhood as he watched the flurry of activities as servants brought greenery and flowers, tidying up the area for the upcoming celebration. He had never been good with goodbyes and now he was about to lose some, if not all of his recruits. Promotion was on his mind, and though he had no doubts the three were worthy, it still saddened him to see the three go. They had become like the children he never had in some ways. But he pushed those thoughts away as not fitting for a Commander of the Horn. Not long after, he saw the three returning through the compound gates headed in his direction. They hemmed and hawed as they stood before him and finally Kade spoke up, "Commander, we have discussed the return to man the ranger hall in Lupre and while we hate to break up our group..." he paused a little overcome with emotion. Vari seeing her opening spoke up, "Kade and Ruskin are going to Lupre, but I'm staying with you, if you'll want me. I figure you need me and bow around to keep ya on the straight and narrow," she smiled, "And to cook for ya, since nobody can stomach your feeble attempts at edible cuisine." Ruskin chuckled and then the shorter man reached up and placed a hand of Kade's shoulder, "We will try to do you proud commander."
Around them, several servants strung large lanterns along the buildings and walls, to shine light on the celebration in the coming darkness.
----------------------------------
Darkness surrounded the four, the room only lit by a single candle, at least for now. Mediphera brought a large copper brazier into the room. It was decorated with a depiction of the Elderwood, with several animals, barely perceived, peeking through the trees and flora depicted on the censer. In her drawing room, Mediphera, Nis, Abaessa and De'Athyra gathered round while atop one large bookcase Octavius stared down, his yellow eyes wide, perhaps keeping an eye on the ever well-dressed Ducky. In vagary, Mediphera said a brief prayer, which for the first time Nis understood. She had asked for blessings upon the four and a successful outcome for the calling. De'Ath, her eyes as wide as Octavius in the candlelight sang a small prayer, also in vagary, of thanksgiving to the Goddess and hopeful that their gift was sufficient. Abaessa, her voice as hoarse and scratchy as the jagged scar upon her throat prayed that the Moon Maiden would bless this ceremony.
Mediphera reached for the candle and handed it to Niserie, "Sister, flames consume but also serve us. As the flame that burns within your heart, so may this flame sear a bonding between the two called to journey as one." She smiles warmly at Nis, "It is your hand that must create the balm of attunement." Mediphera took the hands of Abaessa and De'Ath and began to chant.
---------------------------------
In her room, still wearing the battered armor and her sword still stained with the blood of the witches, Thena began to chant thankful prayers to Tempus for his blessed victory. The glory of the battle had been great, the evil tempered, if not quashed completely. Tenebrae still lived, but so too did all that had fought at Thena's side. There was no question who Tempus favored that day. And in time she vowed to send this Tenebrae to join her slain sisters, if it be Tempus' will. She rose and took a cloth from the washbasin beside her bed. Pure and white, she ran the cloth along Rover's edge, the red stain leaving the blade but spreading its mark on the cloth. Outside her room, she heard a crow caw.
---------------------------------
Bryne heard the crow caw as she walked out into the compound and she looked skyward but could not catch sight of the bird. Lost to her eyes, though she did see the white gulls flying above in wild abandon. She stetched as she looked to the white shapes, glad her strength had returned in the time since she had journeyed to the undercity. She glanced to her right and saw a servant picking up a dead seagull, the white of its feathers stained with blood. The servant held it out away from her moving to dispose of it, and for a moment Bryne flashed back to her home Oakhurst several years past, when servants had carried in the body of her father, his face covered by a white fur cloak covered in blood.
---------------------------------
Dorian thought of his home which was little more than ruins now. He had lost his family there to the northern raiders, who had invaded his lands which lay at the farthest edge of Wildervale. Taken in by the knights of Vale, they were now the only family he had. So he had to press his knightly brother Athan on the importance of his quest to find King Emrec's niece. Athan nodded, "But brother I promised to escort the Lady Morwen and Lady Liviel back to Lupre." Morwen and Liviel stood silently listening, before Morwen spoke up, "Nonsense Athan, we will be safe without you. The rangers are headed back and we will ride with them. This is more important than you escorting two women who can take care of themselves." Liviel nodded, "Besides, you can always join us later and it will give me some time with my new cousin without you butting in." Athan grinned, "Butting in is it?" Morwen shushed Liviel, "Your brother is asking your help and you must provide it. It is part of our vows." "Well," Athan remarks, "That is true, and I do have an idea where Vaela might be headed. The King of Aisland is holding a tourney in Lionsgate. I bet that is just the thing that might draw the attention of the Vale's wild child." Morwen says, "All the more reason you go with Dorian."
Athan is about to say something else when his eyes go wide as he looks to the compound's gate, "Wilwarin!" he says as the group turn to see the elven magus stride forcefully towards them, her clothing different from when last he saw her at the fair, and her hair now worn free and long...

Mave
Mave exits the dungeons and walks into the courtyard, licking her lips and then quickly scanning those within its boundaries. When her eyes finds Wilwarin, they stare for several moments at her unbelieving that she has returned. Finally, she breaks into a run and pulls the elf into an embrace knowing it will embarrass her, but not caring, "Wilwarin, we thought we had lost you."

Torvik smiles at his recruits "I told ya, we dwarves like our meat a little crunchy it's called blackened meat." jumping to the joke first then back to the serious business "Told yah lads you were me picks ta run our Ranger station in Lupre an I meant it. Vari course I'll keep yah wit me. But know yer worthy ta join Kade and Ruskin. But I'll gladly take yah wit me." showing he is fully serious he also informs them "Yer recruits no longer all three o' yah. I hereby promote you all ta Guardian."

Re: Gull's Landing
Dorian runs a hand through his hair, exhaling sharply.
Every moment spent away from his own quest gnawed at him, but Athan was right—Vaela was unpredictable, and if she was headed to Lionsgate, he would need more than just a vague direction to find her.
”Very well” he said at last, his voice edged with reluctance. “Far be it that I stand idle while a promise needs kept. If Vaela is heading for Lionsgate, she might not be subtle. We ask the right people, follow the right rumors, and we’ll find her trail. But first, I will gladly accompany you in escort, if you will have me.

Re: Gull's Landing
Niserie Silverwreath sat among the the others, cross legged and back straight. Her breath came even and deep, filling her lungs with deliberate slowness as she tries to remain relaxed. A little flutter of her pulse and random stray thoughts threatened to distract, but she let the words of those gathered ground her. She smiles with thankfulness at the prayers of her sisters, and wider still at the rare and beautiful song. The black and white cat watched the proceedings curiously, winding among the gathered women and brushing against each in turn.
The Elven woman accepts the candle with a nod of thanks. Tilting the slender beeswax taper she lets the flame spread to the collected dried herbs and incense as she begins to pray in Sylvan. Unlike many Elves it was the the language she first learned as a child, the language she learned the secrets of magic in, the essence of the Fey and she used it now as a respect to her patron.

Spirits of nature, bend ear to my call...
she intones as the incense begins to catch. Setting the candle to the side.
I beckon you, pray heed my words.
Let them ring like the chime of the Lady of Copper and Crystal.
She closes her eyes, arms stretched above the censure with fingers extended in an elegant pose like that of a dancer.
Breathe deep the beckoning scents of the Wise Harvester.
Dandelion to Welcome, Thyme for Courage, Hawthorne for Protection,
She continues, arms weaving and sweeping gracefully through the smoke causing it to billow and spread as it begins to fill the space
The herbaceous aroma wafts of gentle grassy notes, a faint sweetness, the crackle of ground berries, and evergreen.
Mugwort to open the mind and see beyond.
Pine to become one with Nature. And Catnip... She says the last with the hint of a smile, for Friendship.
One eye peeks open briefly in amusement at Ducky who sniffs curiously within the copper vessel.
Nis rests her wrists on her knees, palms up and open in a gesture of acceptance and continues the ritual.
My spirit seeks one among you willing to join me in service of Her;
Grandmother of Witches
Queen of the Fairies
Nicnevin.
Nis' eyes open and she retrieves a some small objects from a sack behind her, laying them out in a fan shape before her on a clean cloth. She watches the feline's reaction as each offering is presented. First appears a small round bundle of tough hide, stuffed with dried herbs and sewn snug in the design of a comically angry face stylized of stitched jute. Second comes a small A tiny wooden ball of woven wicker, bleached white, with a little brass bell inside. Little bites of jerkied boar and venison are sprinkled among the gifts before the final one is produced; a thin switch of willow with a knotted twill line affixed to one side. The string dangles a cluster of thin ribbons tied with tiny silver leaf charms and a trio of fine feathers of duck down. Down from the very same bird she had fetched when she and her companion had first met. Promises of fun, of bounty, of adventure and activity.
Ducky's eyes dart to each new element as it appears, moving closer to catch the scent and texture of it. At first he pats and bops interestedly at each, pausing to sniff and nip at the tiny meat treats between presentations. The wicker ball gets a firm smack, ears perking up at the tinkling bell tumbling inside. His tail twitches playfully when the willow wand appears, the dangling components immediately seizing his attention. After a few moments of exploration, the fancy-dressed feline meanders around the room as if trying to puzzle out what was really happening. A brush of a shoulder for Mediphera, a playful swish of a tail against De'Ath's hand, a comforting nuzzle and a paw of concern for Abaessa.
Nis closes her eyes and continues to repeat the words of the ritual in a clear and even pace. She pauses only at the end of each recitation to open her eyes briefly, often with amusement, and continues. The litany flows smoothly, once... twice... thrice...
Opening her eyes once again she finds Ducky sitting in front of her, watching her face closely with head slightly cocked...

“Darkness always had its part to play. Without it, how would we know when we walked in the light? It’s only when its ambitions become too grandiose that it must be opposed, disciplined, sometimes—if necessary—brought down for a time. Then it will rise again, as it must.” ~ Clive Barker, Abarat
Hours past, a glimpse to what was...
Octavius cocked his head as he watched the cat. Never trust cats he thought. Vile pompous self-centered things. Not wise and ever-watchful like his kind he thought. Why would an elf choose such a wild vicious thing? He sent those thoughts to his companion, Meh-di-fare-ah. She merely gave him a reproachful look and the owl puffed up his chest and nestled against several books stacked atop the bookcase. At least up here the cat was powerless to test his mettle.
Suddenly, Niserie Silverwreath felt what she could only describe as a gentle touch probing her mind. You know the truth, a voice spoke in her head. You recognize my innate wisdom, vast intelligence and dashing charisma. I accept you as my servant. And with that Ducky curled up in her lap and went to sleep.
-----------------------------------------
Wilwarin froze in Mave's embrace, before quickly breaking free of it, a confused look upon her delicate features. "Umm," she said looking to Athan and then back at Mave, "I am the Finla, as you both know," before adding in a soft whisper, "There are ears and eyes all about. Focus on why we are here. The tourney and the warning to the King of Aisland." She swallows hard, "There is much we must discuss."
Morwen smiles at the elf, "Wil...Finla we are here to attend a ceremony honoring our actions. I am anxious to hear of what happened to you after our visit to the fair, but as you said, ears and eyes are about, so best to be silent until we can have some private time after the proceedings."
Liviel turned her attention to Athan and Dorian, "I will repeat this once, since I know men rarely hear what a woman says to them. We need no escort. We will travel with the rangers back to Lupre. And you have not time to follow us like puppy dogs to Lupre. That is in the opposite direction of Lionsgate and you wouldn't be able to make the tourney in time. So I will not be responsible for delaying you in both of your tasks. Mave and the Finla need you. You are her bodyguards remember?" Shaking her head at the two, "Well Dorian won't remember of course, as he wasn't in the Wolf's Lair but you know your path Athan and it seems both yours and your brother's paths have joined due to this Vaela."
------------------------------------------
The three rangers stood before their commander, seemingly dumbstruck. Until Vari lets out a loud squeal, "Guardians! We're guardians now Kade and Ruskin. I...I can't believe it," as she jumps up and down. Ruskin reaches up and musses up Kade's hair, "See Kade old man, I told you we'd amount to something with the Horn." Kade just blinks in surprise before responding, "Commander, we will do our best to live up to this great honor. We will do ya proud, I promise."
--------------------------------------------
At the sound of crow's caw, Thena rises from her knees to look out the window. She sees the servant girl holding the bloodied gull and hears Bryne ask, what happened to it. The servant girl barely in her teens moves towards Bryne with the gull held out in one hand.
---------------------------------------------
The servant girl moves towards Bryne still holding the dead gull and begins to sing...as her eyes change color from blue to black.
“O little one,
My little one,
Come with me,
Your life is done.
Forget the future,
Forget the past.
Life is over:
Breathe your last.”
She then throws the bloody gull at Bryne's feet. "What happened to it is I fuckin' kilt it. As you and the intruders with you killed my sisters. Two of my kin were taken and two of your kin will be required in payment as blood debt." The girl's face contorts with anger before breaking into an evil grin, "I believe your family's path takes them to the tourney. There the debt will be paid." The girl's eyes return to the color blue. She looks confused and says, "Pardon me milady, I musta dropped it." She reaches down to pick up the dead bird, "I dunno what happened to it. Musta got itself in a bit of a scrape or somethin' bad. Here let me clean the blood from yer boots for ya."

The gathered's stomachs rumbled at the sight of the resplendent feast placed before them, but first Lord and Lady Gallowhawk had a few words to say. Beside them stood Mave as well as two of her brothers...Garet and Erel. Lord Gallowhawk spoke in a deep commanding voice, "We owe our lives here to the brave souls who journeyed below, to bring light to the darkness found there. I confer upon each of them an honorary key to our city, as well as two hundred gold sovereigns for each of them from the city treasury. That and our eternal gratitude." He turns to Thena, "Sister Krillovna, I at first asked Brother Lucente to offer the opening prayer, but he declined saying that there was a more worthy child of Tempus here among us. He asked that I let you give the opening prayer for our gathering and I think it only fitting that one of heroes of this city be the one to lead us before we before we dine. If you would be so kind," he says to Thena.

Thena
Seeing the odd exchange between the child and Bryne, she rapidly makes her way to Bryne's side. What's going on?
After catching up she will make her way to the celebration with Bryne.
Thank you, Lord Gallowhawk. Standing up at the table, she draws her sword, raises it over her head, and leads the prayer, beaming with pride:
Mighty Tempus, Lord of Battles, we stand before you, bloodied but unbroken, in the wake of our hard-fought victory!
With steel and strength, we clashed against the Sisters Three; two fell before our might, and one lingers yet, a shadow upon the path ahead. Yet none among us faltered, none among us fell—by your favor, we stand, victorious and unbowed.
We give thanks for the strength in our arms, the fire in our hearts, and the wisdom that guided our hands. This day, we honor the spoils of triumph, not in idle boast, but in the certainty that war is ever turning, and greater battles yet await.
Grant us your favor, O Lord of War, as we press ever forward. Let our blades be swift, our shields unyielding, and our spirits forged in the crucible of battle. For in your name, we fight, we triumph, and we endure!
Hail Tempus! War endures, and so do we!

[Hehe, if Nis could hear Octavious she would point out they are both stealthy ambush predators, but he might not appreciate the comparison
]
Nis smiles and accepts the feline into her lap, gently stroking his head and back; a fingernail gently scritching his jowls. She giggles in response to his message, I was powerless to resist from the moment we met. She sends back. I think we'll make a pretty great team.
She practically beams at the others. I can't thank you all enough for being here, and for your help.

Torvik smiles proudly "Dun look so surprised Kade all three o' yah been through a lot in me charge an have faced many challenges and foes. Yah already rightly earned the title by duty an deed. Enjoy it lads and lass dun act shocked er surprised. It's rightly earned. An I'm proud ta bestow the rank upon all three."Revenant wrote: ↑Wed Mar 19, 2025 8:30 pm “Darkness always had its part to play. Without it, how would we know when we walked in the light? The three rangers stood before their commander, seemingly dumbstruck. Until Vari lets out a loud squeal, "Guardians! We're guardians now Kade and Ruskin. I...I can't believe it," as she jumps up and down. Ruskin reaches up and musses up Kade's hair, "See Kade old man, I told you we'd amount to something with the Horn." Kade just blinks in surprise before responding, "Commander, we will do our best to live up to this great honor. We will do ya proud, I promise."

Dorian stood silent for a long moment, watching the space where the conversation had just played out.
With a sigh, he turned to Athan, crossing his arms.
“We know our road now.”
“But before we take it, is there anything left undone? Any preparation left to make?”
He watched his brother for a response.

[Later, at the feast]
Niserie arrives at the feast dressed in a humble and layered dress of overlapping greens, escorted by her near-constant companion; the well dressed feline knight of the water-fowl. Ducky takes in the scents and sights with interest, but meanders through the assembled host as curiosity staves off his hunger temporarily.
Nis nods approvingly at the proposal for Thena to say the meal's blessing and her face takes on a look of admiration and determination with the warriors words. She searches those gathered for the Lady Gallowhawk and Lord Aurens in particular.

Mave
Dressed in an elegant gown colored to match her reputation as the black sheep of the family, Mave raises her sword, which seems out of place considering her décolleté. She calls out hurrahs after the magnificent prayer, afterwhich she moves to get a drink before visiting with Liviel, Morwen, Athan and Dorian. Looking at Athan, she playfully arches a brow and asks, "Are you regretting not marrying me Athan?" She then breaks out in teasing giggles....perhaps the drink has gone to her head.

"Ho! Ho! Ho! To the bottle I go
To heal my heart and drown my woe.
Rain may fall and wind may blow,
And many miles be still to go
But under a tall tree I will lie,
And let the clouds go sailing by." ~ J.R.R. Tolkien
Arise, the victory won and the time for respite and frivolity begins...After the prayer and the introductions for each of the heroes, all those who fought for the city's safety listed by name, the Lord and Lady signal for the feast to begin proper. Servants dish out food from great plates filled with vegetables, venison, roasted boar, pheasants and all manner of fruit and sweet pies and cakes. Musicians fill every corner of the compound and to the surprise of Torvik, Morwen and the newly promoted guardians they spy the bard Mallorean, who they traveled from the outpost to Lupre with. He is playing a lively tune as numerous young maids twirl in time to the song. Kade and Ruskin look to Torvik as if asking permission to be off in pursuit of said young maids. While Vari not waiting to ask has gone in search of some sweets.
Morwen shakes her head at Mave's jest while Athan turns bright red. Athan quickly changes the subject turning to Dorian, "Brother Dorian, all has been prepared and the only thing left to be undone is your armor. Go and enjoy yourself, dance, drink and wench, probably not in that order. There will be time soon enough for our task after the festivities." Liviel grabs Dorian's hand, "Come sir, help me choose what to dine upon. There is so much I scarce know how to pick enough for one plate." Morwen looks to Mave and says, "You've many admirers here, please don't let us keep you from them. I'd like some private time with Athan, since we will be leaving on the morrow."
Abaessa stays close with her father Aurens still not quite fully recovered though the sight of De'Ath, Niserie and Mediphera at the gathering cheers her greatly. Niserie easily catches sight of Lady Gallowhawk standing beside her husband and Aurens stands nearby doting on his injured daughter.
The wizard Malaguerre and several students including Sigismund are seated nearby with several of the younger student dancing in time to the music and seeing that their mentor's plate and wine glass are always full.
Bryne still mulling over the words of the serving girl is troubled despite the frivolity around her. Mave's brother Garet approaches her, "Friend, you appear troubled. Is there anything I can do to assist?"
Standing next to next to Lord and Lady Gallowhawk, as Thena finishes her prayer, the Lord whispers to her, "I've arranged a meeting in the morn after our fast is broke. I believe you already know Malaguerre has agreed to assist with the items you have found in your travels. And I wish to speak to you all about the voyage to the tourney. I've secured a private vessel to take you, Mave and your friends there." Before he can say more Brother Lucente appears, "A magnificent prayer Sister. We endure indeed and hopefully the city will be less troubled with the coven broken." He takes her aside for a moment, "You've made quite the impression on my flock. All five that journeyed with you spoke of your heroism and leadership. They say without you, the battle would not have gone their way. I have decided to write a letter of recommendation to your superiors in Enslore, if you don't object of course," he pauses waiting for her reply.
And around them in the courtyard the festivities continue...the moon arising...

Sheaths her sword and bows to Lord Gallowhawk for the opportunity to share the prayer and Malaguerre's attention. Thank you, M’Lord!
Listening to Brother Lucente closely she nods at his offer: Yes, I would appreciate the letter, it may have significant sway on my ability to fulfill Tempus’s will. She nods for him to sit for a moment and enjoy some tidbits/wine with her. The entire flock was in tune with Tempus and deserves your respect. I hope you don’t mind me taking the liberty of letting Bessea speak. With a slight laugh and smile.
