Alordan shakes his head. "That whistling has to be the smugglers signal. It doesn't sound right. We can't go back to beachtown yet - we need to go back and warn the natives."

“I can only imagine the natives are aware the smugglers still exist,” says Chauncey quietly, but not without a note of impatience.“They can see a road block as well as we. Anyway, the chief, before he expulsed me from the village, made me unsterstand that they were well aware of the continued presence of some number of ruffians on the trail. These barriers...” he says, indicating the piled underbrush, “...are the ruffians attempting to protect themselves from the natives. We must continue on and circumvent this obstruction somehow.” He crosses his arms, moodily. “I’m not personally chopping underbrush, though. I simply lack the requisite upper body strength. Though I am impressively built for an arcane practitioner,” he quickly adds.

Luther

Luther mumbles a curse under his breath, scowling at the brambles and waitaminit vines. He crouches on the edge of the trail and studies the barrier. Would it be possible to climb over it? And would that be easier than trying to hack a path around it?

Urson: It would clearly be easier to climb over the obstruction and continue down the presumably open path then to slog through the untamed jungle again.

Chopping through the jungle wouldn't be impossible, but travel is at 1/4 movement rate.

Luther

Alordan, Monocar, keep watch for me. I'm going to be busy. Luther begins looking over the barricade, finding the easiest way to climb it, and cutting away small branches to clear that path. His main focus is this, but he'll _try_ to watch out for smugglers who anticpated this very idea.

Hey, Chauncey... can your stick make that thing go all explodey like you did the camp?
After the briefest of awkward pauses, Chauncey replies. “Well I’m sure it very well might under the right circumstances, Monocar, but the question is, what will we encounter on the other side? A lot of disgruntled ruffians, I think it safe to say. Will hacking through them be any easier than ha king through the brush?”

Lightfinger waits.

The Thief stays silent and watchful in the puckerbrush.

From what direction(s) do the whistles originate?

Lerrick looks for a tall tree near the barricade but off the trail. She will climb and see if she can spot anything that might be useful to tell the others

Heading Back To Beachtown
Godsday, The 9th of Goodmonth
Late Morning, Hot, Humid, Buggy

Alordan suggests taking the rest of the day to return north to the natives camp to warn them about smugglers a full days travel down the trail. Chauncey quickly puts that thought to rest, letting the ranger know that it is more likely that the smugglers are worried about an invasion from the natives. The mage presses the idea to simply go around the obstacle, waiting for someone to chop a path for him.

Lightfinger stays put, listening closely for the origination of the strange whistles. The thief thinks he hears them in the trees further down the trail, but some also sound like they are coming from beyond the barricade. Lerrick spots a tall tree at the edge of the trail and starts to climb it.

Monocar wants to see another explosion, asking the wizard to blow the pile up with his stick. Luther begins climbing the pile of downed trees and brush blocking the trail, telling the others to watch his back as he bucks branches from the thick logs. Once he reaches the top of the pile, he has a look over the other side. From his precarious perch, he soon spots 2 men standing down the trail a short distance. They level crossbows at him and he soon hears the telltale click of their triggers. A pair of bolts whizz at the wobbly human, one of them flies past him as the other sticks deep into his shoulder. 4 dam

Lerrick quickly climbs higher than the top of the pile and sees the 2 men shooting at her hairy friend about 50 feet away. She then spots another man in a tree, just a few dozen feet from her current position. This man also has a crossbow in his hands, though the branch he is sitting on is too small for him to be extremely agile with his weapon. He seems to have his concentration aimed directly at her friends, she doesn't think that the man has even noticed her yet.

Monocar

Seeing things are already getting on the way, he draws his fancy new broadsword and charges forward trying to hurdle or at least get a good jump on climbing the barrier so he can join the fray.

Alordan sees that that the jungle to the left of the barricade would take too long to navigate. He climbs the barricade keeping his head down until he can draw and loose missile fire...

Lightfinger winces.

Seeing the Bear-man struck and the mountain Monocar trying to vault the makeshift barricade, the Hobbit remains still. His strengths lie in others being targets, and as of this moment, he knows not where the attackers are located. He'll try to visually spot a route thru the undergrowth that leads around the brush barrier.

Luther

Luther snatches the arrow out of his shoulder, growling Mother-ruttin' misborn! He drops down on the party's side of the barracade, readying his short bow. He gets off one shot, aiming for the man on the left.

Chauncey sees and hears the commotion, but from his vantage point cannot see what, exactly, is transpiring. He infers the existence of at least one bandit on the other side of the barrier from the bolt sticking out of their ranger, but has no way of targeting him with a spell. He stays put for the moment, just peeping out to follow the action as best he can.

Lerrick quickly descends the tree. Once down, she tells the other about the bad guy in the tree. There's one in the tree over there. Can anyone reach him with their bows.

Luther ducks down below the pile long enough to yank the bolt from his shoulder. Monocar and Alordan begin to climb as well, making it to the top once Luther fires off his arrow, hitting one of the attackers as they shift over into the partial cover of the tree line.

2 more bolts whistle past the three amigos at the top of the pile, both coming from higher up in the branches of the trees alongside the trail in front of them. None of the three can easily spot where the elevated attackers are firing from.

Lerrick slides down the tree again once she spots the elevated smuggler. She tells the others nearby what she saw. Chauncey cant see what all the commotion is about, so he stays put at the edge of the trail for the time being.

Lightfinger also stays put. He searches for a spot to bypass the pile, guessing that he could skirt the blockade through the jungle on either side of the pile simply by chopping through the thick underbrush a little bit.

Talaris just stands in the middle of the trail at the very back of the group, not exactly sure why the group has stopped in the first place.

Luther

Still growling curses, Luther sends another arrow at the ground-bound attackers. He shoots at the one on the right of the trail.
