Sorry to me (an 80's kid) "old school" D&D is referring to anything 2e and older. Not specifically OSR. So you will have to pardon the misuse of the term. Don't get me wrong it's cool to see other games making a run for it especially Traveller, along with others. Cantrips I think came into play in 1e? Don't quote me on it but I vaguely recall that in most all 1e games, and I do recall it is in some of the "splat books" for 2e.

Hmm is it me or has this place gone almost entirely away from old school D&D games?
The inclusion of different/new game systems is great, and does not come at the exclusion of D&D games of any edition. Both can (and should) coexist.
GreyWolfVT wrote: ↑Wed May 05, 2021 4:27 pmIn other words I'm looking for old school D&D games!
There is still a large D&D audience here. Posting here that you're looking for an old school game is probably the best way to stir up interest.

That's the general idea Dave I'm hoping to stir up another DM other than the 3 to 4 (Inferno, Hedgeknight, Ogre Mage, Myself) of us already running older edition D&D games. I do agree they should all coexist I'm just not personally into many of the newer versions yes I have given 5e my shot I am willing to play in it again some day, just not going to throw my hat back into DMing it for now.
I love seeing all these other types of games just not anything I feel like jumping into game wise currently. Also was noticing I used to average playing in about 10 games on here now I'm down to 5 ish.

It does seem to be going that way lately. I have been thinking I might DM another game, but work has been crazy busy lately. Perhaps in June, it will be some variant of D&D, 2e at the latest.

No worries I know not everyone has a job like mine, some days this place is so slow I have to make up things to do and yes check the forums here often... I'd like that Rex if you run a game no need to ask I'm in!

Sounds like you and I would define "old school" about the same. Though I'd not include 2e; the wikipedia article seems to say the "PC Police" got hold of it. While I don't consider Unearthed Arcana or Oriential Adventures to be pure 1e AD&D, I'm not really pure. Err... not much of a purist.

Eh 2e is what I started with so I'll always include it, as for the "PC Police" I guess though I don't quite see it myself. Purist is sometimes overrated anyway Leitz.
The way I look at it all is anything before WoTC went hog-wild with things and made the game more like a video game and to me more confusing to learn & play (pre 5e) though that version also acts to me a lot like a video game and I still get confused by many things in it but not quite as hard to learn as when 3e first entered the world.
I like the old school stuff though I to get irritated by the versions that consider demi-human races to be a class.
Having this chat here made me recall I haven't played Rules Cyclopedia D&D in a long time I'd love to give that a run again.

That statement confuses me. You're irritated with versions using race as class but you want to have another run at RC?!

Just poking fun at you Ed.

Oh it is a funny statement I give you that ybn. Yes I dislike that whole elf, dwarf, halfling is a class not a race bit. But I do also have some strange desire to play Basic (B/X, BECMI, etc.) Not so much on the OD&D end and Rules Cyclopedia I was introduced to once played a short run and haven't played since mostly lack of DMs running it. It's one of those things where you dislike it but like the rest of the system so play it anyway.
However, I do also like how RC added druid and mystic in as well as information on how to convert characters between Basic and AD&D.

There's always this old character concept:

P. S. I have my heart set on playing a mychonid assassin/druid/illusionist who doesn’t speak but communicates through spores. Is that allowed?

Ok let's make a Mime character too then

One of the things I struggle with is really enjoying character development and NPC interactions. Not sure I could do the mime thing. I almost wonder if that's why my D&D game went okay, but the others I've tried to run didn't. In the D&D game there was a set real-time limit, and not a lot of NPCs to interact with. The last semi-successful game I ran was elsewhere. Lots of NPCs and interactions. While I'm sure I have room to improve, the game went for almost three years. I haven't been able to do that again.

Would love to catch a Dungeon World or Savage Worlds game on here if I’m lucky! I’d take any other recommendations similar to those systems as I’m quite new to non-DnD systems.

I was running the archived 'Deadlands Reloaded' using the Savage Worlds ruleset.
Due to work issues I had to withdraw from a few games but I hope after some spring exams finish I will be able to restore it.
I will reach out to the players and possibly open up recruitment to fill any gaps. Check back by the end of the month.

For me, the root of roleplaying is not D&D but the Fighting Fantasy gamebooks that were in my local public library in the mid-to-late 80s. Those got to me five or six years before I encountered D&D. I like the classic D&D settings, particularly Mystara, but the rules don't really grab me. I've got a small itch to run an adventure in Mystara, playing something fast and loose and based in Fighting Fantasy (like maybe a Tunnel Goons derivative), but unfortunately I'm not that interested in the grind of running D&D combat play-by-post.

I was an avid Fighting Fantasy gamebooks reader! I wish they had written more in the style of Scorpion Swamp, though. The freedom of movement was revolutionary in the genre.

I tend to think of anything published by TSR (prior to the WotC takeover) as "old school". If the Wikipedia article actually refers to the PC Police getting hold of 2nd Edition, then someone should really think about suggesting an edit. The "Satanic Panic" was a legitimate issue, and TSR did what they thought was the best thing to make the game more marketable to the masses. If that meant removing the terms angel, demon, and devil in lieu of celestial and fiend to get parents groups off their case, then so be it. For me, old became new once everything in the monster manual got a full array of stats, feats, and skills, I was out. That concept worked real well for Dungeons & Dragons Online (not a terrible game by any means), but adjudicating all that at the table is madness.
