OOC I
Re: OOC
Great ideas, guys!
Although I will definitely need some time to re-read, digest, and comment on all of it!
TK: Can we have until tomorrow morning (real time) to complete our planning? I'd like to post on this again in more detail after work this evening.
Also, could we get two more rulings on the flasks of oil:
1) How many "fire arrows" can be prepped from a single flask of oil?
2) If a flask of oil is thrown directly at the troll, must a hit roll be made? Is it treated like a hurled/thrown weapon, and if so, what is its range?

Re: OOC
Take as much time as you need.
1)I don't know, 20 arrows? 30? For the sake of keeping things simple, let's just say one flask is used up making the arrows.
2)Trying to hit a moving target with a flask requires a to-hit roll against the target's AC. Trying to toss it in the general vicinity (trying to hit a puddle of oil, for instance), will require a to-hit roll against AC 10. Again, trying to keep things simple, I'm going to say the flasks have the same range as a dagger.

Re: OOC
We've bought 10 flasks as a group. Drudsa has another 5 himself. I think that should be sufficient to cover the are in front of the door (2 quares) and to draw a sort of "corridor" between the door and the southern corridor (as we will be basically drawing two parallel lines).thirdkingdom wrote:Please keep in mind that while the Rulebook does not state the size, I am working on the assumption that a flask of oil holds about a quart (800 MP, for you metric folk) of oil. So don't be thinking you've got barrels of the stuff. I am going to be generous and say the contents will cover an area with a radius of 5' in a thin slick of oil.
How many flasks do you think we would spend on that TK, 4? Two for the two squares in front of the door and the other two to draw the lines leading to the southern corridor?
The chest room is smaller, I think we can spend 4 flasks on it.

Re: OOC
Saul, that was an awesome parting speech! Bregalad did not really feel it was prudent to take on the troll, but most of the group seemed intent on doing this. Now the elf will not leave this dungeon unless you make it out before him!Luis wrote:Saul was about to ask whether Bregalad wanted to be the cat or the mouse when Lanny made it clear who he thought should be the bait.
He takes on exaggerated tones, in jest, and says to Lanny: "Flatter me some more, will you? Might as well have my ego well armoured against that thing... Still, with my esteemed colleague Grey Jake feeling a bit under the weather I'm afraid I am currently the best scout this party has."
He gives a wink towards Jake, handing him his arrow bag, and pats Lanny on the back while heading towards Semele with a smile on his way out.
"Cheer up, my dear. Oh, and for the love of your immortal don't drop that torch, I'd rather not join him anytime soon."
Saul will drop everything he has save for his goggles, his dagger and his bow with two arrows. He doesn't light any of them as he lacks confidence in his aim and having to light up an arrow in the dark might be too much for him.
He puts one arrow in the notch of his bow, puts on his goggles on his brow, ready to go down if need be, and heads to the doorway. Before putting his second arrow between his teeth and heading out the door he says to the group:
"I'll be right back."

Re: OOC
Hmmm. frobozz, are you suggesting the whole party venture down the stairs in an attempt to face the troll in its lair? 'Cause if understood correctly, the plan that has already been put forward involves sending Saul down alone to try and draw the troll up into the main room.
Re: OOC
Zebediah's overall plan sounds good to me, although we might have to adjust it in certain circumstances (like if Bregalad's Light spell does its job). One thing I would add to it would be to have some oily rags scattered at regular intervals in the southern hallway. We may need to slow down the troll, and creating a fire barrier in the hallway might do it and buy us some time to retreat further south (the troll is faster than we are at 40' per round). If the troll is hungry enough, it will pass through the fire barrier(s)... if not, we can pepper it with arrows at a safe distance from the other side of the fire barrier(s).
I'm assuming that all 10 of the oil flasks of the group were used up in preparing the arrows and setting the fire traps. That seems to leave Marodin, Drudsa, Saul, Bregalad, and Meagnor with their own stocks.
I think we'll still need at least one live torch bearer to set the fires, and to throw the torch if necessary. Preferably someone that is not going to be using a bow or crossbow. (I know Jake already volunteered to carry a torch - if he wants to continue on with that role instead of using a crossbow, that is cool.)
I think that's all I got.

No, not at all. I was suggesting that Saul should shout as loudly as he can after opening the double doors, to try to grab the troll's attention (instead of personally venturing down into the lair).thirdkingdom wrote:Hmmm. frobozz, are you suggesting the whole party venture down the stairs in an attempt to face the troll in its lair? Edit - Of course, if the shout does not elicit a response or if Saul would prefer not to give away his position by shouting in advance, then having him proceed past the double doors using stealth is still an option.

Shouting down a hallway does not require any special thieving skill. Plus it gives away any chance for Saul to sneak up on the troll.
I don't know Lanny. I kind of view this as Saul's moment in the spotlight, his chance to be the hero. His actions and style were way cool, and inspiring. Shouting down the hall, although a possibly valid tactic, doesn't inspire confidence.

Yep. Good point. Let me fix this real quick in IC.Finglas wrote:Shouting down a hallway does not require any special thieving skill. Plus it gives away any chance for Saul to sneak up on the troll.

Good idea, Lanny! Saul's chances (and our group's chances) got that much better for success! Thanks!

Can I get someone to do a quick sketch of the room and setup? It can be pretty rough, but I'd like to see where everyone is.
Re: OOC
Assuming Jake will hold the torch, I think this is it. Please correct me guys. I'm not sure about the barricades position or Saul's position. I think is better if Drudsa stays behind Meagnor and Tratiln

Re: OOC
Huh. The way it is drawn now you guys will be essentially be limited to the actions the four in the front two rows can take.
Re: OOC
It was my understanding that everyone would stay in the corridor. But maybe the idea was to stay inside the room, behind the barricade and I didn't get it.
