Something else to keep in mind. There are ways past every obstacle you face. All three paths lead somewhere, and there are ways to reach the end of all three. I'm not a fan of railroading, so if it ever feels like you're being pushed in a direction, that isn't the case. It's up to you and your wits to go as far as you like in whatever direction pleases you.

If I have nothing prepared for an area, I have tables prepared to roll for terrain, monsters, treasure, etc, so no corner of the map is off limits.

The opening post for our second expedition is up! You may feel free to jump in whenever you like. Since I've had trouble rounding up enough players, you may also choose to take up to three hirelings along. They may be of any basic type. Use them for hauling equipment, bearing torches, or fighting men. Up to you!

As long as we have three players in the mix, we should be fine. I'm sure more will join as we go.

Where should we discuss which hirelings we have? How are they to be played?

I'd like Sven to have a torchbearer called Bautista (can he also be the mule?) and a man-at-arms called Bob, with flail, shield or whatever basic fighting equipment you deem appropriate, oh, mighty referee :-P

How are we to play them? Just name their actions within and along our characters'?

Ha! Good.

Cougbeav is in, and you. Hadarai and RadRabbit also.

That makes four. If you choose to use hirelings, we could end up with a nice contingent.

You may feel free to propose whatever you like for your hirelings. As long as it's pretty basic, we'll be good. Men-at-arms, porters, baggage-toters, torch-bearers, or any combination therof. If I see something too crazy, I'll let you know.

No magical hirelings, though. Or thieves. Just mundane types and men-at-arms. You can direct their actions and I'll adjudicate the results.

Then Bautista (torchbearer) will have have a sort sword (dagger with this rules?) and a sling with bullets, for basic defense. Is he allowed a leather armor?

Bob will go with flail, dagger, plate mail and shield if possible.

I can write that down in my character notes.

Another subject completely unrelated. In many other thread for other campaigns there's an option for 'Quick Answer'. I usually use that, since I often post from my cell phone and that's the only way I can see the previous answers from the rest of you.

This option is not available in this campaign. Is it something that depends on the campaign? Maybe we could ask the admins.

I don't know much about the quick answer option. We might have to pose that to a wiser head than mine.

Leather armor is good. Your men sound fine. Keep in mind that they are entitled to a share of any treasure you find and their loyalty depends entirely on how you treat them.

Your retainers will be 0-level humans, for all practical purposes. You may flavor their race however you please, but they'll fight and play as 1HD humans. Basically, if they get hit more than once, game over, so keep them safe. Or use them to keep YOU safe...but be mindful of their relative fragility. I doubt you'll find more for a while yet.

You all know this stuff. Just reiterating on the off-chance one of you hasn't played an old-school game with hirelings before.

Sounds good. I'll start a thread for retainers to keep track of who has hired whom. Will each one of you make a post in that thread listing your hirelings, please? We'll update as we hire/fire/ruthlessly murder lose men.

Include name, description, and function. If they attain wealth or XP, we'll record it there, too. Just edit your original post and add what they've gained.

Thank you. :)

Things are getting tense for the first expedition! I'm eager to see how this plays out. Most good/bad things that happen during our combats or encounters are generated randomly on tables I created just for this setting, so it's as much a surprise to me as it is you. I like reffing that kind of game. If I know everything ahead of time and steer you at set-piece encounters, it's so boring. Watching you make your own way has been fun.

Thanks for playing, guys. :)

I'll actually have to do that with the random tables too for my OD &D campaign (in person with my friends, not pbp) because of what you just said.

I'm enjoying the game so far!

See...this is why we make multiple characters. When the priest abandons you and flees, you can just save yourself.
