Quest #24 "Spying On Bings Pirates"

Daisy
Daisy stays put, kneeling low on the ground. She watches the men moving around and listens for sny chatter among them. A squad of decent troops could take 'em all... she whispers.

Cealwyn Blackthorn
Cealwyn watches Dexter's progress for a moment, then quickly sweeps his gaze across the immediate vicinity to judge range and trajectory as he quietly strings his bow. He eases an arrow from his quiver and nocks it. "I don't intend to attack them," he explains under his breath. "But if they should discover our small friend and come for him, I'll attempt to provide cover fire while we escape." He looks behind them, picking out the quickest and cleanest escape routes.
A half-dozen bowmen could tear the camp apart with a few well-placed volleys from concealment.

Re: Quest #24 "Spying On Bings Pirates"
Watching The Watchers
Sunday, the 14th of Goodmonth
Late Morning, Hot, Muggy, Buggy
Watching the disheveled pirates fishing from the bank of the river for a while, Dexter decides to move in for a little closer look. Cealwyn and Daisy both agree in a whisper that this rabble could easily be taken down with the right combination of attackers. Galanthas doesn't seem as convinced while he watches his new friends preparing for what might come of their spying game.
As Dex moves away from the others, he takes a mental count of everything he can, trying to learn just how well equipped these stragglers are. He sees targets set up and a few bows leaning against one hut, but not much else in the way of missile weapons anywhere around the area. Of the men he sees, almost none of them are wearing any armor, but several still have swords and daggers on their belts. A few of them are dressed in suits of leather armor, but no heavier means of protection is spotted.
He sees a few flat, long bamboo rafts that are pulled up on the bank of the river, but none of them are packed up with anything. He also sees one communal cook fire not far from the river, but cant tell what, if anything, is actually cooking on it. There is no other gear laying around that can be seen and the whole place seems to be quite lacking in upkeep.
Just when the sneaky Halfling thinks he has seen it all, he spots 2 more armed and armored humans behind the shacks that the others cant see. They appear to have an elf secured to a tree who they are currently screaming at. Dexter cant make out their words in the loud jungle from this distance, but they don't appear all too happy with the lone demi-human.

Dexter moves away from the clearing a bit (say 10 ft more) and then continues to swing around the village quietly, hoping to get some idea of why the humans have the elf, and what they are yelling.

'Course not, honey. I just noticed it because of all the hours I got drilled on things like that at the Convent.

Cealwyn focuses briefly on the nearest pirates, estimating the range and trajectory should he need to snap off a quick shot. Finally satisfied, he sweeps a slow gaze across the clearing and to the portion of the jungle where he last saw Dexter.
He exhales half the air in his lungs before speaking to be certain of quiet speech which doesn't carry far. "I see no indication of a commotion. It seems that our light-footed friend is performing his duty admirably. I hesitate to risk exposing him by moving closer."
He glances back deeper into the jungle. "And if we move now, he may be unable to find us in the event he returns by another route bearing news. Perhaps we should be patient for a moment longer. As this is your expedition, I defer to your judgment. But that's my opinion." He offers an amiable nod and reaffixes his gaze upon the wandering string of huts and the pirates scattered between them.

Ah'm pretty sure you're right, sugar. Ah think we'd hear 'em yellin'.
Daisy holds her position, trying to get a clear image of the camp in her mind.

Watching The Watchers
Sunday, the 14th of Goodmonth
Late Morning, Hot, Muggy, Buggy
Glansandi nods at the rangers wisdom and responds barely above a whisper. "You are correct, of course. Patience was never my strong suit. And by all means, please feel free to advise any of us, at any time. I would be a complete fool if I didn't listen to the reasoning of a professional woodsman runner like yourself."
The elf pats the human on his broad shoulder and remains still and quiet.
After a lengthy wait, once Daisy has taken a good long look around the parts of camp she can see, little Dexter finds his way back to the group again. The nearly silent halfling appears to have something important to tell the others.

Dexter Broadfoot
Dexter walks up to the group and says, "There is not a lot more to be seen, as far as men and equipment. But on the other side of the village, two men, slightly better equipped, have captured an elf. He was tied to a tree, at least I think it was a 'he'. I could not make out what, exactly, they were wanting to know, but it was definitely an interrogation. They threatened to kill him if he didn't tell them and tell them the truth."

Glansandi seems concerned about a restrained prisoner.
"An elf you say? Well, I think we need to do something about that!"
The constable looks to the others to gauge their reactions.

Dexter Broadleaf
Dexter purses his lips and his entire face seems to say, "Yeah, this is what I was afraid of...."
When his mouth moves, the message becomes a little clearer. "OK," he says. "I thought we were in agreement that rescues, raids and other deeds of derring-do were off the table. Yes, we have added another sword arm to our group, which brings us to four, attacking 20 or so."
"We have surprise," he continues. "But they have the defender's position."

Cealwyn Blackthorn
Cealwyn's brow furrows as he absorbs Dexter's news. "Speaking only for myself, I can't leave a captive here to die," he says quietly. He shifts his gaze from Dexter to Glansandi. "But we can't defeat a score of pirates, either. Even if we all decide that a rescue is the best course of action."
He frowns, recounting the pirates and noting their makeshift armour and weaponry. "We could backtrack and raise a party to return, but the prisoner may be dead by then. Or we can move closer and observe the situation until nightfall. Perhaps then we could make a stealthy rescue and leave unscathed."
He looks from one to another to gauge their resolve. "Am I overlooking any options?"

"Welllll..." Dexter starts. "Those two, and their prisoner, were near the tree line. I suppose we could do a 'snatch and run'. Take out the two there as fast as we can, free the elf, and run like hell." He looks around. "I don't think we could even make a good fight out of it otherwise."

Ah hate to think of anyone being tortured, but Ah don't think we should risk a.. snatch and run. Bless your heart, Dexter- ya'll don't really think you and me can outrun a bunch of Bigs, do you?
I think our best option is to wait for darkness- after all these boys have gone to sleep- and then fetch the Elf.

Watching The Watchers
Sunday, the 14th of Goodmonth
Late Morning, Hot, Muggy, Buggy
Glansandi appears relieved once Cealwyn states that he will not leave the captured elf behind. He tends to agree that a stealthy approach after nightfall might be the groups best option.
“Is the area where you witnessed this atrocity large enough to hide all four of us, Dexter? Do you think you can get us all over there without being detected? If a fight does break out, it would be better if we were all in close proximity of each other. Perhaps if we continue to observe them from the bush, we may learn more about our enemy?”

Dexter nods his head. "Yeah, I was inside the tree line, so there is all of the jungle on that side of the village to hide us. As far as getting us there undetected, I would just say go wider than I did. I was about 15 or 20 feet off the treeline. We're all Halflings, Elves and Rangers, so I can't imagine us needing more than 30 feet or so. 35 for that extra margin of error. The we just close in towards the treeline when we're ready."

Cealwyn Blackthorn
Cealwyn secures his gear to ensure nothing will bump or clank, then pulls his mottled cloak close around his shoulders for added camouflage. He gives a brief nod once he's ready to move.
"We need a plan in place in case we're discovered and forced to flee. I advise selecting two escape routes once we've reached our destination. In the event we're forced to retreat, I'll take the rear and provide cover fire for as long as possible."
