I’m awfully tempted to put a rifle or two in the second story windows of the Mad Mesa overlooking the corral to provide fire support. It is kind of hard to tell from the map, how commanding is that view? Would they have enough cover to keep sharpshooters from being useful up there? I think Rusty and I are best suited for the role if we decided to go that route.

I was actually thinking of the top of the blacksmith roof. From the looks of it the best guys with the rifle are also the best guys with a revolver so I guess you try to get your fastest guys with the revolvers since rifle are slow no matter what. So the beginning of the round will be dominated by revolver fire and the end by rifle fire.

Those are actually two windows. The double windows are stacked together. Babe's Saloon, the Russell hangout, is the only two story building on this part of the map.

That is about the way of it. Riflemen want to be out of the way of pistols or they are dead. Accurate but slow are best served as riflemen.

As far as line of sight is concerned if a character is within two squares of a single story building or brush that intersects line of site of a second story or rooftop that character has full cover, reduced by each square further away. So three squares below the shoulder misses and four legs are missed.

On cover - A character shooting a rifle out a window can only be hit in the head, chest, shoulders and arms. A character shooting a pistol out a window can only be hit in the head, chest, shoulder firing pistol and arm firing the pistol. Others shots are misses.

One of my planned house rules, not for this game though, is to split Accuracy into Pistol, Rifle, Thrown, Bow as an ordered list. Players then cross out two from the list and their characters only get modifiers for the two they keep in the order rolled (they can still do the other two but get no Accuracy modifier for them). That way instead of players being stuck with throwing accuracy as a high score they could be riflemen. Throwing is pretty lame in these rules.

I got the stats rolled up. I'll equip him tonight. He's pretty average except his strength (high) and his courage (really low). I think he'll be a contrary-minded, old testament, Bible thumping preacher. Hellfire and brimstone.

How flat are the roofs and how hard would it be to get on them? Say the Mad Mesa, the blacksmith's and the house to the south of the Mad Mesa?

Hiram, revolver speed (+16) accuracy (66%)
Nahum, revolver speed (+21), accuracy (68%), carbine speed (+8), accuracy (68%)
Sawbones, revolver speed (+18), accuracy (53%), shotgun speed (+5), accuracy (63%), Rifle speed (+5), accuracy (53%)
Stumpy, revolver speed (+14), accuracy (60%), rifle speed (-1), accuracy (60%)
Ted, revolver speed (+26), accuracy (47%)
Samuel, revolver speed (+25), accuracy (70%)
Will, revolver speed (+14), accuracy (66%), carbine speed (+1), accuracy (66%)

Maybe Hiram, Nahum, Ted and Samuel go with revolvers
Sawbones goes with shotgun
Stumpy and Will go with rifle/carbine

If he is willing to borrow a carbine or rifle Hiram could go with that, depends on how we want to split up.

Samuel is definitely going with his trusty six-shooters. He's pretty much a shootout on Main Street at High Noon kind of guy.

I think keeping the slower revolver speed guys on long guns makes sense. The big question is where those rifles will be set up.

Is the range 1 square per range number? In other words, short range for a fast-draw revolver is 3 squares?

Yup the numbers in the rules are given in inches or squares.

Blacksmith and house have sloped roofs, footing would be difficult. I would have to come up with something to represent that. The saloon roof is a slight one direction slope.

How hard to get on the saloon roof and is the roof sloping in a way that would allow a rifleman to lay up there and fire into the corral?

Can/should revolver speed guys try to run around the edges for cover, or are we basically going straight in?

The only review I've ever seen for BH said that it was fast and deadly. With that in mind, it might make sense to find cover.

Also, I altered my post a bit. I had this idea for a fire and brimstone, saddle bag preacher, condemning everyone to Hell, but the more I thought about it, the more I realized it would be a fine line to read to make him enjoyable for everyone in the game, including myself. So I'm going with a New England farmhand-turned-hired gun. Hopefully with a bit of humor. :)

The Kanes are going in. They were deputized and have warrants and can't just start shooting. Others can do what they want. The groups walking in are going to meet by the corrals. So if you try to stay in cover you are going to be at pretty long range for pistols.

You will have to do some looking to find a way on the roof. There is nothing real obvious.

OK, last question and I’ll post, what is the mark on the map between the Mad Mesa and the house to the south? Is that a well or something that might provide cover?

Interesting. I hadn't realized the Kanes were going to try to serve a warrant. The intro had sounde (to me) like we had planned to bushwhack them in open country.

At any rate, the ever-so-strong-but-yellow-as-the-day-is-long, Mose Turner is done and posted. Sorry for the delay. (Character creation is always slow for me.)

Not sure why you would think that. The first post says.
Black Wyvern wrote:The plan was to ride out to the Russell ranch and arrest "Old Man" Russell and his three sons: Frank, Clay and Jeff before the Russells could gather their forces.
The "official" law refused to arrest them so the judge deputized the Kane brothers.

Jason - That is an outhouse! It will provide cover for one side of your body if you shoot from it just like any corner. Basically common sense rules with cover if your action exposes a part or part of a part it can be shot.

Nahum is staying with the Kane's, if it goes south he wants to be right on top of them.

It's a combination of skimming and watching too many westerns. You know it won't work, so you might as well just bushwhack them.
