Beachtown Constable Glansandi Storeyja

Glansandi Storeyja
Taking mental note of the trustworthy fisherman's name, Glansandi finds himself glad once again for having Jombo at his side, as he seems to be both familiar with and well-liked by the inhabitants of the town. He steps forward to speak.
"Glansandi Storeyja, newly appointed constable for Beachtown," he says. "These two stand with me as town guards. We're on patrol, and are looking now to introduce ourselves to the town populace and perhaps recruit some more men. If you know of anyone looking for good, honest work building defenses and keeping the area secure, we could use the help."

The old man seems surprised during the introductions.
"Constable? Town guards? What a wonderful idea! And it only took Nehru 3 months to implement this? That has GOT to be a record for him!"
He gives Jombo a smirk. "Good to meet you gentle sirs. My name is Cornelius, though most folks just call me Corn. I do odd jobs around here. I was a smith back on the mainland, but I don't have much of a shop set up here yet. I trust that master Jombo is doing well by you so far, constable? He is a rare one, him. Not many his age with a decent work ethic. Especially round here."
"I sure aint the kinda guy you fellas are looking for, with these old bones and all. But if I can think of any prospects that would be good candidates, I will let you know."
So, you guys doing anything exciting yet? Finding out any new gossip or mysteries around town?"

"Rumors will always abound," Glansandi says, shrugging, "but nothing of substance has surfaced. Right now we're just patrolling, familiarizing ourselves with the town. But it certainly would be helpful for us to have a way to maintain and repair our armor and weapons. Greff here has some smithing experience as well. Perhaps we might change our priorities and look to getting a smithy set up sooner. I suppose we'd have to speak to Mr. Nehru about funding such an effort."
He looks back at his men. "In the meanwhile, I think we'll head over to the common lodgings, introduce ourselves, and see about recruiting," Glansandi says. "These two have both been invaluably loyal, but we'll need to thicken our ranks if we're going to really present a defensive force for the town."

"Like the Constable says rumors always abound, though we've just comeback from the logger's trail and someone has been building strange structures built with black rock just off of the trail.
It'll probably be the topic of discussion tonight at the inn, but in case anyone starts doom saying as far as we saw there was nothing dangerous about them when we investigated."
The ranger follows Glansandi as they move to the common lodgings. "Hopefully we can get some takers this time."

Re: Beachtown Constable Glansandi Storeyja
Cornelius stops the trio before they head off.
"A good forge would be an absolute blessing around.......wait.......what was that about some black rock structures? Built off the trail? Where?"
"I saw some guys poking around over there before." He points to where the structures sit. "But I thought they were just looking for fallen fruit or something like that. Maybe I better go have a look for myself."
"Oh.....and you aint gonna find no takers at the common houses. There is no one in there right now but the sick and dying. Most of us good folk are out and about, trying to find food, or else helping to grow it."
The old man points to the plots of cleared land to the northeast and northwest that the townsfolk are attempting to farm.
"Too bad we aint had much luck with that yet. Most of us are slowly starving to death out here, you know."

Glansandi Storeyja
Glansandi pauses, disturbed by what Cornelius has told him. "Is that truly so?" he says, turning back to face the man. "Has Mr. Nehru not taken steps to improve the town's agriculture? Seeds, tools, and the like? What of healers, to tend to the ill? Shipments of food, to aid the hungry?" Glancing around, Glansandi begins to reassess the state of Beachtown and its occupants -- as well as its leadership.

Cornelius
"Don't get me wrong. Nehru does what he can with what we have here. But that aint much, as you can surely see. When we first arrived, things were much better. But once more people came here, we started running low on supplies. That's when folks turned to the local fare."
"Now there aint a banana or mango to be found within 5 miles of this town. The wild game has all been killed or chased off from this area. And to make matters worse, the fishermen who used to bring in boatloads of fish for us are saying that the waters around here have been fished out. I didn't even know that could happen!"
"So, you see constable, Beachtown is not without its problems. The farmers are trying hard, but the sandy soil around here is not great for growing crops, especially this close to the salty ocean. The agriculture process is getting better, but it takes time to grow crops, and folks are hungry now."
"We are expecting Quark back anytime now, hopefully today! The supplies he brings in will help in the short term, but they wont last long. As far as healers go, we have been relying on the grace of any clerics who have come here to help out in that respect. But most who come here aren't settlers, they are explorers. Sometimes when the good ones go out into the jungle, they don't come back. We had a real nice young sea priest here a while ago. He was always willing to help out the townspeople. But alas, he hasn't been seen around here in weeks now."

"I wouldn't know anything about that. I'm just a simple townsfolk. Though, parties going out into the jungle and not coming back is a recurring theme with the explorers who come here. So, I'm sure that parties going out rescuing the missing parties is fairly common as well."
"It's a dang pity too, I really liked that young man."

"It seems so wasteful," Glansandi says, his frown deepening, "to put one's own life at such risk when one's services are so desperately needed here and now." He shakes his head.
"Thank you for your time, Cornelius. Come, men." Worried for the future of the town, Glansandi wants to see the common houses for himself.

Re: Beachtown Constable Glansandi Storeyja
Moving on to the long common houses where most of the town lives, Jombo stops the group just outside the first door.
"This is where I used to live. It isn't pretty, but at least the rain doesn't drip in anymore."
The young man opens the door and leads the others inside. The accommodations in this large, thatched roof, wooden shack are deplorable. Dozens of hammocks and bunk beds line the entire outer wall of the structure and there are plenty more cots scattered about the main floor of the place. Dirty laundry is hanging around pretty much everywhere and the entire building reeks of mildewed body odor.
By your first estimation, there looks to be around 40 or so individual places to sleep, though it is hard to get a good count with full clotheslines scattered around the place. There are currently 3 people inside the building, each of them lying in a cot on the main floor. Jombo continues...
"Those people are sick. There is usually someone in here caring for them whenever they can. Most people who get really sick here don't ever get better. These common houses were only supposed to be temporary, but since most people cant afford to have their own place, this is where the majority of people live."

Greff covers his mouth with his hand in a superstitious belief that it would protect him from whatever is ailing those poor folks. "I know I'm the new guy here but how long have things been this bad?"
The ranger tries to push the fear that he's made a major mistake comimg to this island but the small feeling still lingers in his mind.

Re: Beachtown Constable Glansandi Storeyja
Jombo nods at the words from Greff, being rather used to adventure types who regret their decision to come here.
"When we first got here, life was hard, but nothing like it is now. Sure, there were lots of risks, and we had to clear out the dangerous jungle animals, but at least there was enough food in the area. With more and more people coming here, the nearby food sources got used up. We are trying to farm and fish new waters, but that all takes time."
"People are getting sick now, and they don't have the strength to fight off their illnesses because of their lack of good nutrition. We had a priest here when we first arrived who used to take care of these issues, but nobody really liked him too much. He eventually disappeared up the loggers trail and hasn't been seen since."

"The loggers trail doesn't really lead anywhere. It just heads straight north, pretty much, for about 5 miles. The greasy loggers that were here followed a growth of weird black trees, so the trail stops where the trees stopped."
"A lot of people use the trail to look for food, or as an easy way into the jungle, but not to actually get anywhere. As far as I know, there is only a little loggers camp at the end of it."

Wes
At some point after leaving the common houses, Wes tracks down the constable to make an offer.
"Constable, I've heard that you have recently taken possession of a number of discarded knives and daggers. I recently lost my own dagger when I was captured by the pirates. Unfortunately, I don't have the money to pay Mr Nehru's prices for a replacement. Would you be willing to consider a trade of some kind?"

The Constable smirks at the mention of Mr. Nehru’s prices, wondering how word got out so fast about his rusty sword collection.
“I would consider a trade. What do you have to offer?”
“And would you care to elaborate on this so called pirate capture?”

Wes
"I have several ways in which Obad Hai could bless you and your men. As guardians of this town you may well be injured or bitten by poisonous animals while performing your duty. Or perhaps you may fall victim to this mysterious jungle fever that is striking down many people here."
Wes ticks these maladies off on his fingers as he talks, and glances at Greff, Jombo and any other accompanying guard members, with an 'ain't that right boys?' look as he chats away.
"When these things happen, I could use the powers of Obad Hai to cure you and return you to health. All in exchange for one small knife".

Constable Glansandi whispers something to Jombo, hoping he will stop shaking his head along with the druids words. The young man takes off for the barracks.
“I would think that any god worthy of thier worship would expect you to help others in need, regardless of any deals you might have made with them. I would certainly hope that none of us would need to bribe or buy necessary healing if we were harmed defending the people?”
