Avaala the Grey

The mage, unwilling to risk abandoning captives, risks his own life instead. Just loud enough for the boy to hear, he calls out, "Hey, boy? Are you prisoners? I hear chains and people calling for help. What is happening here?"

The Mystery Of The Green Flash
Taking the Ship: Round 7
Godsday, The 2nd of Goodmonth
Night, Cloudy, Humid, Less Buggy

Saracen shouts for the human boy to get back into the cabin as he smashes in the head of the sleeping bugbear with his flail. More blood and brains fly around the macabre wooden deck, but that doesn't stop the boy from getting into the action.

Avaala shouts out to the boy after hearing the muffled cries for help coming from the other room. The boy looks up, unable to see the mage all that well, but he answers the unseen voice anyway. "I'm not the prisoner! He is in there! Who are you guys and what do you want with us?" The boy nods his head in the direction of the cabin he came from as he sticks his dagger into Saracen's leg. The blade does not penetrate the warriors thick armor.

Another twang from above makes the mage cringe. He cringes even more when an arrow grazes him across his shoulder while he carries out his conversation. 1 dam He hears the grizzly voice coming from above him again.

"That's it, boy! Get in there and fight these bastards! I will be right down there to help you put an end to this bullshit!"

The mumbling from the open door gets louder, as does the intensity of the chains clinking. The boy looks up at the blood soaked Saracen, noticing his less than friendly visage in the light of his lantern. He sets the light source down on the deck and pulls a brass horn out from under his tunic.

Joe's voice is then heard coming from the rowboat down below. "Junior? Junior, is that you?"

Saracen growls at the child.

”Take one more stab at me and I will strike you down where you stand, boy! Stand aside and lay your dagger down, now!”

If the child attacks again Saracen will strike to subdue him with the haft of his flail.

Just a little clarification, please. Other than the boy with a dagger fighting a Half-Orc warrior, and a guy saying he's coming down from the crows nest to sort things out, is there any other evidence of hostiles? I understand that there seems to be a prisoner in chains behind the door, but anyone else?

Avaala the Grey

Avaala, seeing that Joe is still faithfully waiting on them, and desperately wanting to get out of the line of fire of the watchman in the crows nest, returns to the wheel and hunkers down once more. "Boy!" he calls. "Are you Junior? Do you really want to fight that ferocious warrior with nothing more than a knife? Don't be crazy! If you are Junior, just come with us and we'll take you home."

If Avaala hears or sees anyone climbing down the mast, and no other sign of enemies appear, he'll race the guy to the bottom of the mast and be ready to beat him with whatever stick or club is at hand when the guy gets near the bottom. Something he can use like a staff.

No, that's pretty much it.

Keep in mind that the only light around is centrally located on the lower deck, so Avaala can't see much around him on the stern castle, or up into most of the rigging, or anything near the front of the ship.

The boy ignores Saracen's threatening warning completely, still maneuvering around him, striking out feebly with his dagger and waving his brass horn at the huge warrior. "You don't scare me, ugly! I can FIGHT! These guys are teaching me! I killed 2 men already and I ain't afraid to do it again!"

"If I blow this horn, you'll all be in big trouble! So why don't you just get out of here and leave us alone!"

Saracen swings at the boy with the butt of his weapon, hoping the blow won't kill the spunky brat. The speedy boy dodges the attempt with ease, but not without another comment. "See? Told you I could fight! I guess you ain't so tuff when the person you're swinging at ain't sleeping, huh?"

Avaala shouts to the boy as he keeps his eye trained on the main mast. He doesn't see anything climbing down, but he does see a shadowy form swing through the air and land on the deck up towards the bow of the ship. The kid looks up towards the wheel, still unable to see anything clearly in the darkness.

"Huh! Ya, I'm Junior! Who the hell are you?"

The mumbling from the second cabin intensifies enough that you can almost make out some words in the common tongue. "HEP EE! HEP EEEEE!! ET EE OT A EERE!!!" The heavy chains continue to clink loudly.

Saracen growls in frustration, his dislike of children surfacing quickly with his rising irritation.

It should be no easy task to kill you little moron. If you are proud to be a killer maybe ending you now would prove to be wise.” With that he tries again to subdue the little shit with the haft of his flail and smacks him one good and proper.

Avaala the Grey

Avaala calls out, "Partner! Look to the bow!! Someone came down from the crows nest!"

The mage then comes down the stairs to the deck, keeping close to the port rail. He looks to the door from which the sounds of the chains and someone calling for help is coming. He understands that he is very weak and wants to be extra careful. He calls out to the boy again, "Junior, someone is here to see you. Joe is just below in his boat."

IF someone hostile comes out of the door, or approaches Avaala, he will retreat immediately, going to the port rail, climbing over and lowering himself as far as he can reach before dropping into the water near Joe's boat. He'll then swim for the boat.

The Mystery Of The Green Flash
Taking the Ship: Round 9
Godsday, The 2nd of Goodmonth
Night, Cloudy, Humid, Less Buggy

The young boy continues his attack on the much larger Saracen, still stammering like children often do. "Oh ya? Well..... First your gonna have to catch me, fatty!" The boy swings out again, very luckily cutting through a vulnerable spot on the warriors mail. 3 dam

Avaala calls out a warning for Saracen to beware of action behind him as he makes his way back down to the lower deck. He peers into the open door of the second cabin and spots the prisoner Junior spoke of. Inside the small room is a rickety cot, a small empty table, an open chest full of what appears to be a stocky man's adventuring gear, and a half naked figure chained to the wall by heavy ships chain. If the barrel chested brute were twice as tall, the mage might think it was a half-ogre. But since he is barely 5' in height, Avaala assumes he is actually a really powerful half-orc. With a mug such as his, there is no way he could be straight human.

The ugly brute seems to have ripped one of his arm chains from the wall already, and is currently working on the other. His ankles are also chained and shackled, but not to the wall. There is a 1' chain in between the shackles that would allow him slow movement once freed. The half-orc points to the chest once he sees Avaala and continues with his mantra through a tightly bound filthy gag. "HEP EEE!! HEP EEEEEE!!!!" With his huge muscled chest and arms straining, he continues to tear away at the chains with strength that could nearly rival a hill giant.

Avaala shouts to the boy as he takes it all in, causing Junior to stop and turn to respond. "Wait! Joe is here? I mean, my dad is here? These guys told me he was dead! Where is...."

At the same instant, Joe has apparently climbed the cargo net to peek his head up over the side of the rail and hears the whole exchange. "Junior? Junior, is it really you? Those bastards told us you were killed!!!"

At that very same instant, Saracen clobbers the boy in the head with the haft of his flail, tearing open a large gash in his forehead and knocking him senseless to the deck with a loud thud. Joe screams out, leaps the rail, and charges directly towards the confrontation.

Saracen takes the knife from the unconscious child and binds his wound.

”He kept stabbing me, I had no choice! I warned him twice. I merely knocked him out. I will heal him once we are through here and back at the town. Look out for the other pirate!”

Once done with that the holy champion will move over to Avaala and cast a spell of curing upon him if he isn’t in danger of being attacked.

The Mystery Of The Green Flash
Taking the Ship? Round 10
Godsday, The 2nd of Goodmonth
Night, Cloudy, Humid, Less Buggy

Joe bursts onto the scene with a look of pure hatred in his eyes once he sees his boy brutally slammed to the deck. He rushes to his side and picks his limp form up before immediately turning back to the rail and his rowboat. "What is wrong with you, orc? Cant you see he's just a boy?" Saracen tries to explain himself, but in the heat of the moment, Joe is having none of it.

Avaala sees the brutish half-orc tearing chains out of the wall, so he gets an idea. Saracen moves over to him and begins a spell to aid the mages wounds. (healed 5) Before Avaala can even enter the cabin to offer help, the still gagged prisoner rips apart more of the inside hull of the ship, this time tearing a plank right off the wall to free himself completely now. The stocky brute is still shackled around his wrists and ankles, dragging heavy chains along with him as he hops towards the open chest. Grabbing it up with one massive arm, the newly freed prisoner struggles to walk out onto the deck to join the others, looking all around for his escape route.

Joe manages to get himself over the side of the rail while still carrying the prone form of Junior with him. He shouts out one last warning before he disappears down the cargo netting. "I am getting my boy to shore! So, if you don't want to swim back, GET IN NOW!!!"

A twanging noise is heard coming from the unlit bow of the ship as an arrow flies in and hits Saracen in the back. 4 dam The unmistakable sound of a heavy crossbow being cocked is the next sound heard.

Saracen motions to the wizard to follow the fisherman. He will try and take cover and help free the half-orc from the remaining chains.

Once done he will help him over the side and down into the boat and leave together.

Once in the craft he will turn to Joe. A boy or not, he could of killed me with that dagger. Be thankful I showed more mercy than he and only knocked him out, because he’s a boy. Once we are clear I will use the last of my light magic to heal him.

did we manage to get the unconscious sailor into the fishing boat before all hell broke loose?

"Orright mush, thanks for yer help!" Maag slaps Saracen on the shoulder with his free hand, then totes the chest over to the ship's rail. He scrambles over, drops the chest into the boat, then follows it down, surprisingly nimble for such a muscle-bound brute.

Once in the rowboat, Maag moves to the center, flexes his huge chest muscles and grabs the oars. "We all in? Time to gerrout of 'ere". He gets ready to pull as hard as he can.

Avaala the Grey

Avaala wastes NO time getting over the rail and down into the boat. Having seen (and heard) the entire exchange, he moves to the boy and starts bandaging his head. "Joe, he's going to be OK. Apparently, they told him you were dead, just as they told you he was dead. They wanted to recruit him to be one of your crew. They tried to steal your son."

He doesn't offer to shake hands with the half-orc, as he is rowing. But he smacks him on the back and says, "Hey, I'm Avaala. Nice to meet you."

The Mystery Of The Green Flash
Taking the Ship? Round 11
Godsday, The 2nd of Goodmonth
Night, Cloudy, Humid, Less Buggy

Joe begins to untie the rowboat from the side of the ship when he starts getting rained on by the others and their gear.

Avaala hops over to the rail immediately, ready to get back off of this boat before he is shot again. He climbs down the net and helps secure Junior in the bottom of the boat, attempting to calm Joe down in the process as well. He has trouble seeing anything but the glow from the lantern above him.

Magg yanks down his gag with his free hand and rushes for what he can only hope is a sure escape route, tossing his gear into the boat and jumping over right behind it. The darkness down here in the smaller boat doesn't bother the half-orc much so he inserts himself directly into the rowers seat and grabs ahold of the oars, ready to get the hell out of here, wherever here is.

Saracen is the last person over the side of the ship. As he moves to the rail, he is grazed by a heavy crossbow bolt that suddenly ricochets off of the thick shoulder pad of his armor. He tries to spot the man he knocked unconscious and partially bound a few moments ago, but he doesn't see him lying on the deck where he left him. He hops over the side and situates himself in the rather crowded rowboat as Joe pushes the smaller craft away from the hull of the ship. Another arrow swacks into the side of the boat as they begin to pull away. Joe throws himself over the top of the unconscious Junior when he realizes that arrows are still flying.

It becomes clear that Maag has no idea where he is or where they are supposed to be going as he just starts rowing frantically in the direction the boat was pointed, out to sea. A few more bolts and arrows fly by harmlessly and land in the water as they pull away. The last thing heard coming from the area of the larger ship is diabolical laughter.

Once the boat is out of range, Joe stands up again and points towards the area of Beachtown. "I think we want to go that way!"

Saracen grunts to the magic-user and nods. ”I’ll live i think, no thanks to the boy! Who are you, what were you doing on board the green flash? Do you know what these pirates are up to? Waiting for? Did we get the sailor I captured? I wanted to interrogate him!”

Once the boat is out of missile range and heading to shore the holy champion moves over to the unconscious youth. I will try and heal him if I may? But when he comes around you most make sure he does NOT try and kill us again. Agreed? he says stumble to Joe.

If the fisherman agrees he will cast his last magic to cure light wounds upon the boy.

Maag strains at the oars, making up for his lack of experience with his brute strength. “Name’s Braiden Maag. Maag if you like me, Mr Maag if you don’t. I woz lookin’ for a quiet place to keep me ‘ead down for a while. You know ‘ow it is, right? This place sounded out of the way enough.”

The boat lurches as Maag catches a crab. “I got on board quiet enough, but they found me, drugged me, kicked the crap outta me. I think they were gonna cut me up and use me for shark food, but that captain o’ theirs is a vicious cold-hearted bastard. He wuz gonna use me as a slave on some smugglin’ job they got goin’ here. Said might as well get some work an’ sufferin’ out of me”.

The boat sways from side to side a few times as Maag tries to follow Joe’s directions back to shore. He takes a while to catch on to the fact that he needs to pull left to go right and vice versa.“Anyway, they are the worst bunch I ever met. I used to ‘ang out wiv some rough fellas back ‘ome, but this lot…” Maag shivers, and it’s not because of the night air. “They wanted to cut me up and feed me to the sharks…I mean, feedin’ me to the sharks is one thing, but goin’ to the effort of choppin’ me up first? ‘Ow cold is that? An’ that captain? I reckon ‘e would have been first wiv the axe”.

Saracen listens intently to his fellow half-orcs words. Pondering a little the holy champion thinks over all that has been said

A smuggling operation is it. Hmmmmm interesting. I don’t suppose you overheard what they were smuggling, or where to? The captain does appear to be a nasty son of an ogre, his motives are becoming more clear however. Did he say what plans he had for beachtown, or how many men he has at his command? I was hoping to steal one of the sailors to find out these very answers. Still, the rescue of you and the boy is somewhat mollifying. We must take this news to the leader of beachtown as soon as we get back.

Turning to Joe the orange robed half-orc asks Why would they want to steal your son, or tell you he is dead? Do you have any clue? It seems unnecessarily cruel without a purpose behind it!

The Mystery Of The Green Flash
Leaving the Ship
Godsday, The 2nd of Goodmonth
Night, Cloudy, Humid, Less Buggy

The heavy shackles and chains still attached to Maag's wrists make the chore of rowing the overfilled boat rather unpleasant and arduous. But he is so glad to be away from the maniacal, shark feeding smugglers that he doesn't seem to mind all that much. He finally spots the cook fire burning at the shore of Beachtown, so he keeps right on rowing while the 2 half-orcs get acquainted.

Saracen and Avaala look over the unconscious boy, glad to find him still drawing a feint breath. The priest uses his final bit of magic to heal the boy, hoping that will calm Joe down as well. The spell knits the gash in the boys head and helps regulate his breathing, but it does not bring him fully back around. Joe still looks upset, but is willing to answer Saracens questions if it means he will get some answers himself.

"I knew those bastards were up to no good, but I didn't really think they were capable of doing something this horrible. How could someone get their jollies out of stealing children?" The fisherman scratches his head for another moment before finishing. "I am sure we will learn more about all of this once we can talk to Junior, but right now I am just glad to have him back!"

Every occupant in the boat lets out an audible gasp when something submerged and unseen suddenly bumps hard into the underside of the hull.
