Chapter 7: Beyond Burial
Re: Chapter 7: Beyond Burial
FWHOOSH!
Sweat beads upon the brow of Morris Grumm as the mage calls upon pyrotechnic arts and summons aid from the elemental plane of fire.
The flames on the far side of the door immediately swell and continue to feed upon the door itself. Acrid smoke begins to swirl and rise, slowly filling the chamber.
With the exception of the crackling flames, no other sounds can be heard.
Wil struggles to overturn the stone table, but his efforts are also met without success.

Re: Chapter 7: Beyond Burial
has the gnoll pressure on the door ceased can we tell? No more banging and axe chopping ?

Re: Chapter 7: Beyond Burial
Yes, everything is quiet on the other side of the door, with the exception of a few pops and hisses from the flames.
Re: Chapter 7: Beyond Burial
Woohoo. Can we smell burnt flesh and hair and leather at all?
Hex will hi five whomever is closest to him. Let us be wary and ready in case the creatures have survived or are mustering another attack with any survivors yes yes yes?"
He will congratulate Morris on his wonderful magic also. Finding a place in the room that has a view of the door but offers some cover within 20' or so he will ready a couple of daggers and wait to see if there are any remaining gnolls that want to press through the weakened doorway.

Re: Chapter 7: Beyond Burial
Wil smiles grimly at the offensive success of the remaining party. Always skeptical, however, he urges caution to the group "Let's hope that our tactics and fiery magic has ended this threat. Let's be cautious that they are not now circling around to one of these other doorways that we think are our safe exit!"
Re: Chapter 7: Beyond Burial
Abijah Dun points around the room: "More doors. Quick to scout rooms; fall back to one of them. Move hurt men to be safe. Block door. Yes?"
Abijah looks at the chained book with a pained expression. Once books were friends and advisors. But since his injury, the squirming black marks have lost all sense, and bring only crackling headaches. "What is book? Worth gold? Has spells?"

Re: Chapter 7: Beyond Burial
Wil nods at the suggestion of scouting as he is one of the healthy ones remaining. "Scouting ahead makes sense. Keep a watch here and I'll take a look. I'll give a shout if we have trouble ahead to the north" He'll secure a torch that can be used and make his way quietly to the north door and beyond.....
Re: Chapter 7: Beyond Burial
Relieved temporarily, Morris moves to the large table and examines the chained book.

Re: Chapter 7: Beyond Burial
As Wil inspects the door to the North, Abijah checks out the door to the East—first listening at the door, and then carefully opening it enough to see what lies on the other side.
Re: Chapter 7: Beyond Burial
Following the harrowing encounter with the gnolls, the flame consumed door eventually begins to die down to a smolder. Ghost-like tendrils of smoke hover about the silent chamber, accompanied by the nauseating smell of burnt hair and flesh.
The group pauses to take stock of their calamitous situation. Brother Yon, devout priest of Light has fallen, and Osprey the elven spellblade and Kragg the dwarven warrior-rogue perilously lie on the threshold of death.
There is no question that things have grown quite dire.
In this moment of reprieve, the group takes notice of the murals and mosaics that adorn the chamber walls. The depictions of souls being shepherded to the Land of the Dead and the large stone slab in the center of the room denote this place was most likely once used as a burial preparation chamber.
Morris makes his way over to the stone slab to examine the book chained to the podium.
The thick, dust covered tome is constructed of fine leather and embossed with holy symbols of Lunia. The mage blows the dust from its surface and discovers its contents must remain a mystery for now, as no writing can be found along its cover or spine, and it is secured with a locked clasp.
Abijah moves to investigate the eastern door. He listens intently then cautiously cracks it open to peer down the lengthy corridor beyond. The passage continues straight ahead and further on into darkness.
Wil boldly takes it upon himself to scout ahead. The pious monk hefts his torch and disappears down the passage to the north.
Torchlight spans 30’. Both the northern and eastern passages seem to extend beyond the light sources.

Re: Chapter 7: Beyond Burial
Hexalon will, when no further sign of the gnolls becomes evident beyond the burned doorway, moves over to take a careful peek through the broken wood to see what is beyond.
"I don't think it's wise to seek out whatever else is down here without recovering our party members first. Osprey and Kragg need lots of bed rest at the very least. There was a round chamber up above that had no other exits from it, and there was also the small secret exit Phineas and I went to explore that led to the outside of the monestary, that might be a good place to rest yes yes? If we could take the book here and examine it and the strange map with our revealing divinations whilst we guard the injured we might be able to gain certain advantages from such discovered knowledge if successful yes yes yes? Retreating up the stairs and finding a safer place to hold up for a while seems wise about now yes indeedy!"

Morris nods at Hex as he fishes around for his dagger. Yes. Lemme get this book and then we can see about dragging these two someplace safe..
Dagger in hand, he will attempt to pry the book from its chain.

Re: Chapter 7: Beyond Burial
Abijah closes the door he'd been inspecting, and catches up on the plans of the others. Nodding to the door, he says, "Dog men may be dead. May be not. May wait for more kill." Pointing to Osprey's armor, he says, "Spell man, out of spells? Wear this? Help break past dog men."
Re: Chapter 7: Beyond Burial
"No he wasn't out of spells. Just luck," the halfling says with a shrug.

Re: Chapter 7: Beyond Burial
The rapacious flames have seemingly had their fill, as the halfling phanatsmist, Hexalon, stares out through the remains of the singed door and counts the bodies of three smoldering gnolls. Reluctantly, his eyes are drawn to a fourth charred form, that of his one-time companion, the holy priest of Light, Yon.
The halfling solemnly shakes his head at the senseless loss as smoke steadily rises from the seared corpses and chokes the stairway in an impenetrable haze. He then turns away from the macabre scene to suggest that the party take refuge in the meditation chamber on the first level above.
Abijah voices concern that there may be more dog men lying in wait, but there are no more signs of the vile creatures.
With the assistance of his dagger, Morris pries free the book from its fetters. The grizzled mage admires the hefty tome and wonders how to unlock the latch to reveal its secrets.
There is no word from Brother Wil, as he has yet to return from his solo exploration of the northern passage. Ravenn4544, please see private post.

The cairn toad tunnels are too narrow for anyone larger than a dwarf to traverse, so it will not be possible for everyone to recuperate there.

Re: Chapter 7: Beyond Burial
"There are no signs of the gnolls, but I count only three of their number along with a very charred Yon. I doubt there is much left of his gear but perhaps there may be something useful upon his person still yes yes? Hmmmm where has that monk gotten to. I hope we haven't lost another one hmmmm yes indeedy!" Hex says carefully moving through the burnt out doorway and checking poor Yons belongings through the sleeves of his robe in case he is too hot to handle. He will keep an eye out up the stairs as he does so for the gnolls return.
"I think we had best be swift if we are to get the injured to safely. Morris, can your feathered friend scout out ahead for us carefully as we move hmmmm yes no?"
There are a couple of secret doors leading to places that may price slightly more defensible and safer we could try. The secret stairway with the crack in it and the shaft leading upwards that's hidden by a secret entrance.

Re: Chapter 7: Beyond Burial
Abijah follows Hex past the charred door, keeping a sharp lookout for any signs of gnolls.
Re: Chapter 7: Beyond Burial
Hex and Abijah hesitantly move out into the charred hallway. The bodies of the gnolls and Yon have almost been completely consumed by the flames, and nothing of value can be scavenged. There are no signs of any adversaries.
Morris clutches the newly found book and joins the others in the hall. He turns to Hex, "Yes, Iris can scout about for us...if I can get the ornery bird to cooperate. We need to find refuge, but I do not want to leave without waiting for the monk. Why in Hell's name did he wander off alone?"
Morris looks about urgently, anxious to be away.

Re: Chapter 7: Beyond Burial
Hex suggests the group follows after Wil and see if he is ok. The sooner they find respite the better. He will carefully move through the door again and cross over to the portal the monk explored and peek behind it, weapons ready.

Re: Chapter 7: Beyond Burial
Morris reluctantly follows the halfling's lead, hoping to find the wayward monk.
