Expedition - Amistad: Down the Morlock Hole - 06 July 2021
Re: Expedition - Amistad: Down the Morlock Hole - 06 July 20
"Blackjack, he be drowning, and ye worried about the girl?" spits Olaf in response. He does not lower his crossbow. "Snap out of it, laddie!"
Re: Expedition - Amistad: Down the Morlock Hole - 06 July 20
Earc
Earc drops his pack and casts a spell. A crackling bolt of energy appears at his side.
"I've got to try and save him. 'll be right back..."
Earc swims out to where he saw the bubbles come up. He tries to compensate for any current by moving upstream first and allowing it to take him downstream.
When he gets a bit upstream of where the bubbles were, he attempts to dive down to see what he can see, holding the glowing driftwood in his hand as he does so.

Earc
Earc returns to the surface, coughing and sputtering, and quickly makes his way to the shore.
"Quick!" he shouts, grabbing a hold of the rope snaking into the water that appears to still be tied to the dark skinned lumberjack. "He's being held under by some sort of water dragon. If we all pull his rope as quickly as possible, maybe we can get him back. I'll keep my spell handy in case one of them tries to stop him."

Re: Expedition - Amistad: Down the Morlock Hole - 06 July 20
I'm expediting by doing some of these rolls myself to make the threads come back together.
Olaf [3d6] = 6 CHA check
Olaf's appeal doesn't fall on deaf ears. Akkara looks concerned for the fate of her friends, and watches the bubbles in the river. She's still not going to let Olaf shoot the defenseless girl, but she isn't about to let Amistad drown.
Earc bursts back to the surface, yelling to the party embers about water dragons and the rope. Akkara and Achaedany join him at the river's edge (Olaf too, if Zhym agrees), helping to grab the rope and pull, heaving as hard and as fast as they can.
STR check to pull the rope [1d20] = 10
They feel an initial resistance, then a 'pop' after which it becomes much easier to pull. You haul the rope hand-over-hand until you see Amistad swimming as hard as he can to reach you. His head breaks the surface and he gasps lung-fuls of air, initially unable to talk. He doesn't need to, however, because the concern emerges on its own.
Two slender young green dragons voice their angry displeasure with reptilian roars, their heads popping above the water on slender necks as they swim in pursuit. Amistad outpaced them, but they're not far behind. One dragon is hot on pursuit, the other just behind with the crystal sphere in its jaws.
(Actions and initiative!)

Olaf's eyes grow large at the sight of the dragons. He swings his crossbow to point at the dragons and fires!
Crossbow (THAC0 19): [1d20+1] = 1+1 = 2 [1d8] = 1
Wow.

Releasing the held magic missile is a free action. Holding for both Earc and Amistad to post first-round actions as well.

Earc of Toll's Tower
After releasing his magic missile spell, Earc casts Continual Light on the eyes of the second green dragon, hoping to blind it. And maybe get it to drop the crystal sphere at the same time.

'Blackjack' Amistad
Leaps onto the riverbank like a salmon and flops around while gagging for breath. Puking up water and river silt he gasps, "I think we need a bigger boat!". Grabbing his stuff he makes for further inland. "Even young dragons breath fierce weapons, the one carrying the orb may not be able too though. But they both weren't too happy when I interrupted their game of tag."

Re: Expedition - Amistad: Down the Morlock Hole - 06 July 20
Achaedany, Akkara, and Olaf all pull up their crossbows and fire off a volley at the front dragon as it roars. Amistad leaps up and flees inland, running straight into Olaf's crossbow bolt, which embeds in his shoulder (-1hp). Achaedany's bolt flies wide, but Akkara's bolt lodges firmly in the dragon's neck at the same time as Earc's magic singes it's flesh. The front dragon is heavily wounded and yelps in surprise at the fierce attacks.
Earc weaves the words and gestures of his light spell, blinding the rear dragon's eyes. It howls in agony, dropping the sphere with a 'plunk' into the river. The young maiden let's out a wail of dispair.
The two dragons bodies and tails arc into the sky, glistening for a moment as they wheel and dive back below the surface.
(Actions? If you win initiative, you can act before they flee, but all crossbows need reloading.)

'Blackjack' Amistad
happier on land than in the water, Amistad will retrieve his battleaxe. "Two dragons, and young. Would hate to run or rather swim into mother. It will be dangerous to try again." Amistad will turn to the dryad woman. "You could have prepared me, if you want help you have to trust us. Where do these dragons come from?"

Earc of Toll's Tower
Hoping to ensure the dragons don't quickly return, Earc casts Continual Light on the eyes of the wounded green dragon, as well.
If that works, he says, "We should retrieve that ball now while the dragons are unable to fight us."
If nobody else volunteers, then Earc will tie the rope to his waist and attempt to dive down where the ball was dropped to get it.

Olaf, now more or less resigned to his fate (but staying well away from the tree woman), volunteers to hold the rope.

Dragon save [1d20] = 1
Earc is quick with his casting, the wounded dragon also letting out a yelp of dismay as its eyes are blinded by radiant, glowing light. The dragons disappear beneath the surface.
The fae girl shrinks back from Amistad's chastisement, tears quickly burbling out and flowing down her cheeks in the saddest display. "They... *sob* I... *sob* they... they live... *sob* in the river... *sob* hatched... *sob* I thought... *sob* they... *sob* but they didn't... *sob*" Akkara is moved by the scene, putting a comforting around the girl and giving Amistad a disapproving look.

Re: Expedition - Amistad: Down the Morlock Hole - 06 July 20
Earc dives into the river, swimming out to the middle of the channel and then diving to try and find and recover the orb. The effort is exhausting to his skinny limbs as he fights the current and he finds himself overexerting himself and gasping for air several times, his lungs aching. (-4)
At the bottom of the river, he easily spies the two young dragons, their eyes glowing brightly, the light cutting through the murk. They are swimming slowly along the bottom, apparently searching but hindered by their lack of sight, blood trailing off in the water from the side of one dragon's neck in a dark plume. They are dubious of him, retreating away from where he splashes and dives. Earc sees the orb on the bottom and, with enough exertion, manages to reach it and haul it to the surface.
After a twenty minute ordeal, Earc emerges on the riverbank with the crystal orb in-hand. Akkara sits with the young girl and comforts her until Earc appears, whereupon the girl exclaims joyfully and reaches out to Earc for the orb's return.

Earc of Toll's Tower
Once he reaches the shore, Earc examines the crystal orb before the girl is able to get to it.
When she reaches him, he reluctantly hands the orb over to her. "It wasn't easy, lady, but here you are..."
OOC: Should we finish off the dragons if we can? Maybe the next day? Earc could summon some magic missiles and at least kill one of them.

Earc looks at the orb, which remains an intriguing mystery to him. It is a smooth sphere made of hard crystal. It faintly luminesces from the inside, flickering and shifting chaotically.
He hands the orb over to the girl, who clutches it reverently. She has calmed, her red-rimmed eyes and sniffly nose all that remain. "You've saved me. How can I repay you?" she asks.

Earc of Toll's Tower
Earc frowns at the veiled orb as he passes it to the woman.
He thinks a moment before replying, "For a start, you can release us from your spell. Through my desire to serve you, I can feel the tug of your natural magic..."
Then he continues, "Other than that, information is always useful. Where do the green dragons keep their lair? What do you know of the weird creatures that look like crosses between two natural beings, like the weaseljay or the grumpbear? Do you know anything about the grey-skinned creatures known as crawlers?"
He shrugs, "or treasure is always useful. If you know of any foul creatures nearby that we might help clear out, then we could compensate ourselves with whatever they've plundered."

The girl furrows her brow and looks confused by your statement about a 'spell.' She brightens when you continue on, asking about other creatures.
She cradles the ball, stroking it lovingly. She drops back into a cross-legged position, her back against the tree, and facing you. She seems to have accustomed herself to the idea of conversing, now that you've returned the sphere. "The mother dragon of these green ones is in the great forest, within the great collapsed dome. It sparkles like crystal, but shattered, long ago. There are three towers there, vines all twined. Her collection is there, which she takes from the old places and the new orcs who dare into the trees." She seems pleased with this recitation. She seems to be excited to tell these observations to someone. "These gray ones, the fusers of beings... they live beneath the earth. They have a great chamber where the beings are submerged, coming out as something other than what they were."
She reaches through the tree trunk, rummaging about, then returning with a handful of gemstones. "The fusers had these; they are not interesting and contain no visions." She offers them to you.
- Tiger Eye Agate
- Round, Polished Onyx
- Flawed Amber
- Worn, Oval Amber
- Round, Faceted Peridot
- Flawless Black Opal
