The party quietly moves to the open area, which is just that - a widening of the tunnel an additional 8 feet or so. In this area you see the cause of the smell - a half-eaten and dismembered corpse amidst piles of offal. In the remains, you see an ornate dagger, sheathed and still affixed to a partial length of leather belt. Pieces of paper and bits of leather are strewn about as well.
At this time, you all note a change in the voices you have been hearing from up the tunnel - they are definitely coming closer - then the voices suddenly stop and nothing more is heard.

Drizzle slowly moves back behind the others, sliding his dagger from its sheath.

I'll wait for everyone to reply, given the approaching something or someone.

Adrog moves to the front (if he isn't already there) and prepares for possible combat.

Arsenios - Cleric
Arsenios moves for cover, as he prepares to lend support (if only moral) to the "beat down" heading for Adrog."i would that Dai were here..." he whispers.

Ruby (autopilot) moves back into the open area with the others. Arsenios' light wand still illuminates your end of the tunnel, so there is no chance you can surprise anyone.
Adrog sees two humanoids come into view, about 40 feet away. They appear similar to the two killed out in front of the mine several days ago by the Warden - fanged teeth set in a grotesque face and large, misshapen ears. They carry crossbows and sheathed swords. They spot Adrog and yell something unintelligible, loosing crossbow bolts as they charge.
Two Grendel crossbow bolts: [1d20+1] = 11+1 = 12, [1d20+1] = 8+1 = 9
The bolts are deflected harmlessly off of Adrog's shield. The two humanoids drop their crossbows and rush into melee range.

Drizzle throws his dagger at the lead grendel.
Drizzle dagger throw [1d20-1] = 7-1 = 6, dmg [1d4] = 2
Perhaps I should say he throws it into the darkness behind the grendels. ugh. He readies his staff and wishes his meager little head could hold more than one spell per day.

lol@1st level M-Us with low DEX

.
You jumped the gun on initiative a bit, and normally missile fire into melee is not allowed, due to the risk of hitting, well anyone. But if you want to wait and redo your action once initiative is rolled, it might be possible if one of the Grendels tries to flank Adrog, or you think Adrog can take an accidental stick

. Or you can keep the action and just re-roll again when the time comes.
A note for Adrog, he is a 2nd level fighting-man and so gets 2 attacks per round (each attack as if he were 1st level) on any opponent(s) of fewer than 3 hit dice. Or he can strike once as a 2nd level fighter.

Adrog
Divide, then conquer. Adrog attempts to divide the nearest creature from its spine, so he can then conquer the other one at his leisure.

ooc: I enjoyed it many years ago. If I remember correctly, the author wanted to write stories in Tolkien's world, but couldn't get permission. He wrote Iron Tower as a pastiche.

[I forgot to copy the die roll links in the first bit, why they are missing]
Combat Round #1
Inititive: Grendel [1d6] = 6, party [1d6] = 6
Simultaneous! As the Grendel charge they snarl and draw two swords each!
Adrog Sword of Thaxon: [1d20+1] = 10+1 = 11 MISS
Drizzle dagger throw - MISS (if you want to re-roll that, go ahead, just remember there is some risk of hitting Adrog)
Arsenios readies his sling this round.
Ruby (autopilot) Moves up and attacks - Ruby short sword: [1d20] = 18
HIT
Ruby short sword [1d6] = 5
Ruby finds a weak spot in the Grendel's armor and takes a wicked gash from his side. The Grendel fights on however!
Grendel #1: Attacks Adrog -
Grendel #1 [1d20+1] = 10+1 = 11 MISS
Grendel #2: Attacks Ruby -
Grendel #2 [1d20+1] = 20+1 = 21 HIT
Damage is the better of 2xd6:
Grendel #2 damage: [2d6k1] = 6
Status: Grendel #2 is wounded, as is Ruby. These Grendel appear to fight well with two weapons.

Drizzle will whack at the grendle attacking Ruby with his staff.
Staff whack [1d20] = 5, dmg [1d6] = 1
Drizzle should go home now.

Combat Round #2
Inititive: Grendel [1d6] = 5, party [1d6] = 4
The two creatures strike first!
Grendel #1 vs. Adrog:
Grendel #1 [1d20+1] = 10+1 = 11 MISS
Grendel #2 vs. Ruby:
Grendel #2 [1d20+1] = 1+1 = 2 MISS
Adrog vs. Grendel #1:
Adrog Sword of Thaxon: [1d20+1] = 13+1 = 14 DMG: [1d6+2] = 5+2 = 7 HIT
Adrog's mighty blow cuts the Grendel in twain.
Arsenios vs. Grendel #2:
Arsenios sling: [1d20] = 10 MISS
Luckily, the wild sling stone does not hit Drizzle, Ruby or Adrog!
Ruby vs. Grendel #2:
Ruby short sword: [1d20] = 15 DMG: [1d6] = 2 HIT
This one is sorely wounded!
Drizzle vs. Grendel #2:
Drizzle staff: [1d20] = 18 DMG: [1d6] = 5 HIT
Drizzle's staff connects with the Grendel's head, caving it in. Both humanoids are dead.

Yay, Drizzle!
Drizzle will search for his dagger, take a look at the new one to see if it appears magical, and looks at the pieces of paper.
I could use some peace and quiet to rememorize my spell, if you're willing to wait. It might have helped against these things.
(1) is the DM rolling all rolls? I'm cool with that, if it's the case, as you're rolling better than I am, Doug. Just checking.
(2) Does the rule that "When rested, a MU can re-memorize a spell after one turn of study per spell level" apply?

The dagger is finely crafted and has a jeweled scabbard and silver pommel on its hilt. If not magical, it is surely worth something.
The bits of paper appear to have snippets of magical writing on them, perhaps this was a mage's spellbook? Sadly, it does not appear to be recoverable.
1) I will do all the rolls, yes (although looking back I see we just had the one roll for sleep so far, so it was an open question).
2) Yes, 'rested' being at least 6 hours of sleep.

Arsenios - Cleric
"I would agree that a rest is merited. This smell is rather unpleasant, why not retreat where the air is a bit fresher?"
Arsenios will tend to the wounded before beginning his devotionals.
