Yes, normal range for the short bow, long range for the slings. About 90'-100' of distance.

Beato suggests that one of us shows himself to the guards, challenging them or otherwise taunting them to come forward. Then the others shoot from a distance and weak them a bit before we engage.

If there is someone without a bow perhaps they could be the bait?

Otherwise, a lone Halfling who appears to have lost his way would seem like easy pickings to 2 hobgoblins... You three remain behind the ridge while I make a spectacle of myself. "Oh deary me. I've lost my way. And the sun is nearly set. Whatever will I do?" That sort of thing. I'll pretend I don't see them and start making camp, loudly. Hopefully, they'll start towards me. I'll wait till they get some distance from the house. When I give you the signal, a loud whistle, you three hurry over the ridge with bows ready to fire.

Sound like a plan?

While the others prepare to ambush, Heff appears in the trail, pretending he doesn't notice the hobgoblins. He makes movements, talks aloud and soon attract the monsters attention. Looks like the two guards are not in a good mood since as soon as they see Heff, they get up and start running towards him.
Reaction Roll [1d20] = 2 - Hostile
They will catch Heff in the next round if he stays still.

Surprise [1d6] = 2
The monsters were surprised, so I assume your characters noticed their intention and are able to act at any moment during the monsters run.

Beato will shoot them with his sling and then charge, mace in hand.

Heff drops to one knee and whistles loudly, signaling his comrades to fire their arrows.
Heff draws his sword and prepares to battle the charging hobgoblins.

Not having a good feeling about Heff being the distraction out there, Balam takes his hand off his sling and grips his battleaxe tightly.

Hoping the Hobgoblins are distracted with Heff enough not to notice him until it is too late, he heads out of cover and, leaning over begins making his way toward the convergence point. He starts a bit slowly and quiet (as quiet as he gets) but raises as he gets closer and goes from a quick shuffle to all out charge.

Round 1

While the hobgoblins run towards Heff, Beato fires against the first of them with his sling, but the shot is missed. Realizing the ambush, the hobgoblins slow down and stand close to each other, axes in hand, prepared for combat.

You notice that both hobgoblins are very strong and they both have that strange blue painting on their faces.
Beato [1d20+10] = 3+10 = 13 [1d4] = 2 13+1 (for range) = 14 - miss
Round 2

The first hobgoblin notices Beato approaching and strikes against him. The monster stumbles and his ax ends up stuck in the ground. Heff tries to capitalize on this, but the hobgoblin is able to avoid his sword. Beato also charges against the monster, striking a blow against his shoulder.

The other hobgoblins advances towards Balam, who is quicker to act and open the creature's head with his ax.

One taken care of, Balam turns and looks for an opening in the fray with the other, attacking if he can do so without endangering his comrades.

Beato will continue to press on the humanoid, attempting to manouver the hob into being flanked by himself and Balam.

Round 3

Beato tries to hit the hobgoblin guard while he is busy getting his ax back, but the creature is fast and manages to avoid it. Balam also strikes, but stumbles in the last moment, letting his ax slip. This makes the hobgoblin attack Beato, who is in better condition to be a treat, but the cleric was already prepared and the strike in unfruitful.

Heff, who has retreated a few steps, doesn't have a chance to charge against the enemy.
Hobgoblin Morale [1d20+13] = 12+13 = 25 - Hobgoblin fights

Initiative Balam/Beato [1d20+1] = 19+1 = 20 [1d20+1] = 20+1 = 21 - When you don't need a good roll...the Hobgoblin loses initiative because of his fallen ax

Attacks
Beato [1d20+7] = 9+7 = 16 [1d6] = 3 - miss
Balam [1d20+9] = 1+9 = 10 [1d8+2] = 4+2 = 6 - critical miss...this time is Balam's ax the one to slip to the ground
Hobgoblin target (1 - Balam/2 - Beato) [1d2] = 2
Hobgoblin (Beato) [1d20+4] = 11+4 = 15 [1d8] = 5 - miss

Heff stays close to the ground and strikes low at the hobgoblin, trying to stay out of the "crossfire" between Balam and Beato.

Hearing Beato ask for the hobgoblin's surrender and seeing as he is momentarily axeless, Balam will try to move to the side opposite Heff and attempt to slam into the hobgoblin.
He is attempting to tackle the hobgoblin to the ground, hoping that Heff will react quickly enough to take out the legs/the hobgoblin trips over him. He assumes his comrades will help subdue the creature should he be successful. (I hope he's right ;))

Round 4

Beato's command seems to affect the monster. The hobgoblin retreats with both arms raised, while the companions are ready to strike.
Hobgoblin Morale [1d20+13] = 6+13 = 19 - fail

Initiative Balam/Beato/Heff [1d20+1] = 10+1 = 11 [1d20+1] = 17+1 = 18 [1d20+3] = 16+3 = 19

Initiative Hobgoblin [1d20] = 20

Holding the action so you guys can change your decisions if you want after the surrendering of the hobgoblin.

If he is backing off away from us Beato will say On your knees! and

1. if the hobgoblin doesn't stop he will strike him;

or

2. if he stops Beato will tie him up or otherwise restrain him.

As the hobgoblin seems to be surrendering, Balam will recover his axe and scratch the most inappropriate place he can reach.
