New Heaven Protest

Protestors have gathered outside the dock where a "Church Transport" is landed objecting to New Heavens renewed interest in the supposed Apostacy of Sparks. The short notice of the docking - and the fact that the passengers had been disembarked within minutes of landing - have angered opponents. Docks Spokesman, Sean Mackenzie, issued a statement. "The vessel that landed last night complied with all regulations and passed the usual customs checks - There is nothing that should anger anyone in the efficient and effective operation of our newly rebuilt spaceport. We welcome and encourage trade and business - that is the lifeblood of the belt."

Raspberry Blight?
An New Earth native microbe appears to have started to attack the Walthersland Raspberry crop. Identified in 3 separate growers, the Agricultural Directorate has quarantined the affected growers while the genetic basis of the infection is determined.

Education Crisis?
Today's report on the state of the Belt's Education Services has revealed shocking statistics regarding the quality of mentoring being provided to children of the smaller rocks while remote learning.

As the report says, If you live in a community of 300 or less, there is a less than 50% chance that you will complete your high-school diploma. This is not a failure of material investment, but a failure of investment in the mentors needed to help our young people to navigate their way successfully through that material.

A spokesman for the Belt Educational Standard Committee said "This report is a comprehensive analysis of the state of the Education System inherited from our predecessors in office. It is now our role to answer the challenges presented and our new policy, to be announced Tomorrow, will seek to meet this issue head on."

The Seven Cubic AU of the belt makes this the largest Educational Space in the New Earth System - and the least densely populated. Any issue that is a problem for a Downer's rural hinterland is also here but on a larger scale.

Diplomatic Incident?
Neighbours of Li Anderson were shocked to find that, instead of an empty house in need of a weekly clean, their employer was dead in his own kitchen, shot during some form of struggle. The location of his wife is not currently known. Police were called, but the address is a consular property of Touchdown and as such the investigation has been passed to Touchdown Authorities.

Michelle Nkurunziza Exhibition Announced
The Worlds Gallery has announced an exhibition of the work of Sapphire Artist Michelle Nkurunziza. This exhibition, to open 300-30, will be in two sections: A retrospective of the artist's early works and new works by the artist created in the last two years in response to the strains between the East and West continents on that world.

Peace Talks?
The Dean-Bishop of the Cathedral of Santa Maria arrived in Shelter for discussions with Gregory Tonj. Insiders suggest that the pair are discussing the tensions caused by the deaths on the boarder of several New Heaven defectors and a Shelter Border Guard. That these talks are even happening suggests a softening in New Heaven's diplomatic position.

The office of the Prime Minister of Shelter issued a statement: We are always pleased to see the concern of or neighbours and pray that the outcome of this meeting will lead to an agreement that will stop these senseless deaths.

Okami Coalition Disintegrates
The ruling coalition in Okami has imploded after a critical meeting over the budget last night. The meeting, which stretched out into the small hours, eventually broke up in acrimony with the Dentō withdrawing support from the Prime Minister.

Alghasaq Stolen?
The en Sabah Yacht, Alghasaq, was discovered to be missing this morning. Investigators looking into the assassination of Amena en Sabah had sought to search the vessel but when they arrived at the port, the vessel was found to be gone.

A spokesman for the Touchdown Space Navy issued the following statement:

Belt to deploy Observers
It has been announced that a Company sized detachment of Belt Administration Department of Defence observers is to be deployed to Sulphur to monitor the border between the Sulphur Cooperative and the New Heaven Prison Complex.

This deployment will reassure the citizens of the Cooperative that the International Community is looking after their interests and that the system will be watching.

Trouble at Grand Plaza
A group of youths marred an otherwise quiet gathering of Cart enthusiasts at the Grand Plaza last night. Their senseless violence caused damage to a Cart and a nearby apartment block. Police state that the unruly behaviour was quickly dealt with. Two people were taken to hospital suffering from minor injuries, but both were discharged later.

The prompt response of our police officers quickly brought the situation under control and the youths dispersed before any serious damage could be done. The evening was generally enjoyed by the hundreds that turned up, although the lack of proper notice, and appropriate marshals, from the organisers did mean we were having to improvise to ensure the event passed off quietly.

Break in at Meta-Pharma?
Rumours are circulating of a corporate coup at Meta-Pharma. Has one of its rivals truly downloaded its entire research database? While access to the private enclave is limited, damage to one of its domes, and a number of damaged vehicles in its vicinity, suggest that the stories of a smash-and-grab data raid may be true. Certainly, the share-market on New Earth is reacting badly.

Peggy Kazama Stands as Councillor
Peggy Kazama has announced that she will be standing as candidate for the office of Councillor for West Sapphire following the assassination of Amena en Sabah at the end of last year. With no official candidate from the en Sabah dynasty, Peggy looks the most plausible candidate announced so far.

New Foreign Legion?
Hew Heaven has announced a new initiative, inviting citizens of all nations to apply for service in a new security regiment. They are offering 20 years service in exchange for Citizenship. Full training will be provided for all deployments. The Regiment is to be a short-notice deployment unit available for policing and security functions anywhere that New Heaven forces are required.

The title of the new unit is the "Legion of Oblations"

New Heaven Redeployment
In an unexpected move, New Heaven has announced a redeployment of its off-world forces. With a certain irony, the Legion of St Michael is to deploy to Dis. Other announcements are expected soon.
