"I am sorry, but we make a habit of not trusting outsiders," answers the first. "If this is truly something that concerns you, we can discuss it in the Gynarchy. Otherwise, you will have lost nothing," says the second. "The answers we received will be meaningless to you, anyway, I would suspect," says the third, "as we do not understand them, either." The first one speaks again. "Meet us in the morning, at first light," she says. "We will give you a token that will allow us to enter Beoae unmolested," says the second. "By journeying to us you will prove you are in earnest, and will do much to earn our trust," continues the third.
Gardo

Looking to Notai, he waits for some sort of acknowledgement. She stares into his eyes for a bit, unblinking. A small nod then turns to the women. Gardo addresses the trio again. "We shall meet then. Notai and I will be outside the confines of the wall for the night so we will meet you at the front gate."

tk, would Zellar know anything about this ruined tower?
It sounds a lot like one of the watchtowers that used to ring the domain of Kimrid that was abandoned at the end of the last Cycle, during the orcish invasion. Kimrid used to occupy a much larger area, and is in the process of expanding again, but many of the watchtowers were abandoned as the forces of Law withdrew.

Torthuk looks curiously at the quills and the heart*. "I've never seen anything like these," he says. "I can give you . . . 600 gold for the heart, and 100 gold each for the quills. I don't know that I've got anything that help you directly, sir," he says, "I've got . . . let's see. A few potions of a magical nature, two scrolls, one of which I can't read, and some books that may be of interest."
Telemachus

"Would you allow me to examine the scroll you can't read, to see if I can at least identify what's on it?"

The mage stands back and lets Newton do the negotiations.

"I would be amenable to that deal, yes. And yes, I believe our luk is roughly equivalent to your alcedes." He shows you a gold coin. It's embossed with a relief of a sphinx, in profile, on one side, and a pair of crossed, curved blades on the other. It looks to be about the same size of the coinage the adventurers are all familiar with.

Zellar

Zellar agrees with Newton's suggestion to depart in the morning. She remains at the inn with the intention of meeting the other party members and learning more about their backgrounds and intentions.

When the night is over, she will return to the temple to ready her things.
Are there any acolytes who would accompany Zellar to tend to Thunderhoof, see to her camp and act as a spiritual brother or sister as she journeys with these strangers?

As retainers or hirelings? Retainers will need to be recruited, get a share of treasure and XP, etc. Hirelings are more like non-leveled followers who get paid some amount, won't venture into dungeons, etc. A couple of the PCs have sort of loosely defined hirelings that watch over baggage, etc. I'm fine with assuming there is a novice acolyte who serves as Zellar's squire, if you'd like, but they won't engage in combat or anything.

Telemachus

The mage, having memorized his spells and seen to the health of Casfrea, declares himself ready for adventure.

"Let's be off, if we're to examine this watch tower more closely."

Alright, if there's already a baggage train, I'll hold off on adding anyone else to it for now!

Newton

That evening, as Zellar gets to meet everyone, Newton explains about the books he obtained from the mage in exchange for the demon-eel parts.

"There's a book about Isendan, a scroll written in Faery with directions somewhere, a travel journal and an unknown book in an odd tongue. Hopefully they'll have some useful information we can use in our journeys. The mage also identified the gauntlets for us, they make you very strong. They belonged to a guard captain that Kimrid sent south last year and she never returned. Perhaps when we leave tomorrow we should stop at the temple and let them know. The guards deserve a proper burial and we want to avoid any awkwardness if they are recognised. Zellar, perhaps you might be able to direct us to a suitable person to inform"

Zellar

When she has a moment, before departing on their journey to the tower, Zellar will purchase a lantern, 3 flasks of oil, and 50' of rope.
...assuming there is some sort of general provisioner in Kimrid!
I believe I saw somewhere that we don't need to track horsefeed. Is that correct?

Newton will ask Anhere the innkeep if she recognises the language of the brown leather book, or if there is anyone from Gifukrum staying at the inn.

Gardo

"Gauntlets? We don't really need to let them know about those, do we? Also, what's the price on that Isendan book? Due to new info, it may be good to know the contents of the book."

Gardo will then explain the situation with Notai and Isendan, letting Notai speak of her past and Gardo adding on the conversation from the Three Sisters.

Newton

"I swapped those books for the demon-eel parts we harvested, so it's upstairs if you want to take a look. I know I took a chance, but I thought we might find sometimes useful in them. If we don't find anything good in them them I'll reimburse everyone when we get back to the Scarlet Principalities. Torthuk the mage recognised the gauntlets, so he might mention it to someone."

Fourthmonth, Twentysecondday
Rhea's Ford

It is in fact faster for Goshawk to travel south, through Rhea's Ford, then to Junction, than the other way around. Traveling by himself he makes good time; the air is noticeably warmer than it was, two weeks ago, when the adventurers first came to Bastion and he felt the icy hand of death around his heart.

Goshawk reaches Rhea's Ford by early evening. It is too late to do anything in the evening except eat a meal and relax, but on the morrow he will have plenty of opportunity to meet with Tolniel Fer, the factor they have hired to represent them in Rhea's Ford.

Fourthmonth, Twentythirdday
Rhea's Ford

First thing Goshawk goes to visit Tolniel Fer, who has some news for him. "Reker Nus has finished identifying the items you gave him," he says, "and charged a sum of 1500 alcedes. I took the liberty of paying him out of your group funds, and have the items here, if you are interested."

The items are as follows:

*The strange lantern that Notai had sold is called a glamourbox. Forged by the Ancient Ones in days of old, it had the power to record an image and project it, as an illusion. However, in order to function it requires a source of magical energy made specifically for such items. The Ancient Ones would collect magical energy in storage containers no larger than a human hand and use those to power their devices. Such technology is lost to the modern era, but it is said that on occasion these power cells can be found in ruins, still containing a charge.

*The mask of the mummy will, if worn, grant the wearer extra vitality for a short period of time. Over the years, however, it had been tainted by undeath and necromantic energy, and has the potential of taking a toll upon the wearer if used to frequently.

*The spear is enchanted with a modest dweomer. Once per day, when thrown, the command word kthimi can be spoken, and the spear will magically return to the hand of the wielder.
Mummy's mask grants the wielder an extra 5 hp when worn. If the wearer is ever reduced to 5 or fewer hp their Constitution is permanently reduced by 1d4. If the wearer's Con is ever reduced to 0 while wearing the mask they transform into an undead creature.

The spear possesses a +1 enchantment. Once per day it will return immediately after being thrown. If the wielder can make a second attack with the spear in the round they may do so; otherwise they may attack as normal the following round.
Fourthmonth, Twentythirdday
Kimrid

The adventurers rise in the morning, intent on visiting with the priests of Mnencir before heading out. They are shown into the same waiting room as before, and 'ere too long Hallnir, the Herald of Mnencir, enters the room. "I have heard you have business with me," he says, upon entering.

Goshawk
After his meeting with Reker Nus and with a sack full of valuable loot, Goshawk finds himself at a crossroads leaving town. He looks to the south, thinking about what a different life could mean for him. He barely hears the yell of the carter behind him, telling him to get moving. After another moment, he aims his horse northward grumbling about how Feargus better lay off the menial requests now that Goshawk will be rejoining him.

"Good morning your holiness. On our travels to Kimrid, not far to the south of here, we defeated four giants. At the time we noticed some bodies in the area. Since arriving here, we have come to realise that they may belong to some guards you sent south quite a while ago. Today we have decided to explore the ruined tower, but after we shall return to the area of giants, and with Zellar"s help determine if they are your fallen guards. If they are we shall return them to you for the proper burial they deserve".

The priest looks lost in thought for a minute. "Ah, yes," he says, "I remember now. Takka Fledwi, one of the Watch captains, and her entire patrol, was lost, perhaps a year ago. Fell to giants, as you said. We sent another sortie to try and recover their remains, but suffered heavy casualties. You will be well compensated if you return their remains to us."
