What would YOU like to play or run? (Interest Catch-all)
Re: What would YOU like to play or run? (Interest Catch-all)

This is a game about killing things and taking their stuff so you can become more powerful in order to kill bigger things and take even better stuff.

1e is a good choice. Hyperborea even better.

I approve of this!hedgeknight wrote: ↑Wed Sep 04, 2024 1:42 pm Age of Worms.jpg
Since the beginning of history, humanity has measured time in ages. Ages of glory, of Dreams, and even of Great Sorrows mark the human tally of the years, giving a sense of order to the events of past centuries. But one age has yet to occur, an age of darkness, of decay, and of writhing doom. Witty bards and wrathful preachers know it as the Age of Worms, weaving it into the peripheries of their passion plays as a mythic era of destruction that could begin at any time. Astrologers, diviners, and servants of the fates know more. The canniest among them fear that the Age of Worms has already begun.

Neither do I but it sounds cool.

... ancient cult or evil artifact is threatening to destroy the world, unless a band of heroes unlock the mystery and defeat the "ancient evil". (a series of adventures from levels 1 thru 20)
Classic Old School D&D Serial Adventure Modules ... with undead (If I am not mistaken).
[That should not be too much of a spoiler for a Level 1 to 20 adventure series! I mean, did anyone think you were going to get to Level 20 and NOT encounter undead?]

There must be something out there with no undead, but that said. Why?

This was created in the 3.5 era, so you are in luck.GreyWolfVT wrote: ↑Tue Sep 10, 2024 10:21 pmI'm just a kid born in 82 I dunno much before 2e with some 1e understanding and exposure. In the true 1e days you had endless dungeons where you entered a sealed crypt and were attacked by a pack of wolves and nobody was supposed to ask why there were wolves locked in an underground crypt for a hundred years? At least by 2e and 3e, the creativity standards had risen (even if the rules became too complex to actually play).

What about the GDQ series? That started out with Giants and ended with Drow (I don’t remember if there were undead in that series of adventures … just lots of chances to get killed).

Re: What would YOU like to play or run? (Interest Catch-all)
How about a simple one that used to be included with the DM screen terrible trouble at tragidore. I ran that once and it was weird to me that the end boss or big baddie in charge was a drow.

It has been so long I can't remember if the G/D series had any undead in it. The drow were a stable big baddie for a long time.

Wolves are there - that is enough.
These youngsters today ask too many questions!

And yeah, Age of Worms is 2005-2006.

This is a perfect statement that I feel very deeply. In the true 1e days you had endless dungeons where you entered a sealed crypt and were attacked by a pack of wolves and nobody was supposed to ask why there were wolves locked in an underground crypt for a hundred years?

Ha ha ha, t'was good times! When you walked into the 20'x20' room and were beset by the 6 hill giants that lived there, good times!

Re: What would YOU like to play or run? (Interest Catch-all)
Genuine question:
A lot has changed since the 1e heydays... is that still a/the preferred style of play? Or is there now an expectation for a bit more realism, or logical explanation?

I don't know that it was the preferred style even in 1e days. Gary wrote about the need for a realistic ecology right in the DMG.

True.
Maybe accepted instead of preferred.
Or, do players expect more?

Re: What would YOU like to play or run? (Interest Catch-all)
While dice give good randomness, I really enjoy figuring out how that got into my dungeon. When we think of ecologies our minds often follow expected paths. By rolling first and then figuring out the ecology I've wandered into stories significantly more interesting than what I had planned.
Some players appreciate it, some don't. I usually make the appreciation take a little effort and give a decent reward.
