Magdal was taught to believe the term shady halfling was redundant but doesn't voice that opinion lest she offend anyone. She looks to the bandit who brought up the subject, "Care to elaborate on that statement?"

Investment guides? Might show a trail of where the bandits are laundering money and what accounts they use, who in the Keep is the bookkeeper or a accountant to help invest finances.

History & Folk tales? Might have some truth in them or key clue, 'werewolves are harmed by silvered weapons', maybe some other significant detail; how to slay Bulettes, who Gnolls worship, history on the caves, Keep, ruins. At the very worst, he can donate to the school library.

He will take a selection of each , stuffing a volume of choice into his pack and pouches to study later. They might lead to a discovery or nothing at all to but unless you try, you won't gain anything he thinks.

Anything behind the shelves?

Probably nothing. His searching is not very concentrated. The only positive he might contribute is casting his Detect Magic spell to peruse the shelves and any lockers for anything highlighted beyond the ordinary.

"Let me see if an arcane eye is any better."

He gathers the caltrops, not wanting to step on anymore. "Searching the room may be valuable. I'm pretty sure anything interesting will be trapped, so be careful."

Bugs finishes gathering and then will start searching. The fireplace and decorative box are of interest.

Rida

Once the caltrops are picked up he will search the room.

He moves inside and carefully examines the inside of the fireplace for loose stones, pausing momentarily to gesture the decorative box on the mantle. "At this point, I'd assume the box to be trapped, as well ..."

Lady LeNore listens to the logic of the others in her group, eventually taking charge of their decisions.

"Well, if you ask me.......I don't see any problem with taking the easiest path. Especially since you have just displaced the entire bandit operation, and also because, as Renna suggests, we already have one of them with us."

The former bandit with them looks to Magdal. "Oh, sure. There was a group of halflings who were also in cahoots with those bandits you just dispersed. These little fellows weren't just brigands, they were professional killers, I tells ya. A wicked lot we should do our best to avoid at all costs."

INSIDE

Crabgrass stuffs some books into his pack, finding nothing but wall behind the shelf. As the others search, he casts a spell that will help him detect magical items inside the room, finding no such aura from the books or the shelf so far.

Bugs and Loyn discuss calling things by more logical names, the thief finding a heavy leather bag hanging on the wall with the door to store his new caltrips inside.

Nothing unusual is found around the fireplace, but the wooden box and pipes atop the mantle catch Meinhardt's eye. The mage can smell the hint of herbs when he gets a little closer, seeing no signs of traps on the decorative wooden box. When the dwarf sticks his head inside to check for abnormalities in the stonework, he immediately spots a loose brick in the back wall of the fireplace.

Trusts those skilled in traps and construction figure out if the loose brick is just that; Heaven forbid pressing it drops another down the chimney flue on to a head. Maybe a concealed door or a hidden vault might be a better prize.

With no visible aura detected, he will go back to casual searching while we can. Checking through the bunks and under mattresses.

He gives the fireplace a once-over and glances back at Loyn. "I don't see anything out of place, however, I am certainly no stonemason." He instead turns his attention to the pipes and box on the mantle. "Now, these should fetch a fair price, I imagine. This box must contain their smoking tobacco, then." He opens the box to get a better scent.

Rida

Rida will continue to search along the walls, working his way clockwise from the entrance.

Haldric offers to investigate any stone anomaly observed.

Bugs

He hefts his new bag over his shoulder and moves to examine the fireplace with the others. "More traps? Or a hiding place for something that is trapped? Gods, these guys have me all paranoid now."

Bugs will check for traps if and when he gets a chance. Find Traps (40): [1d100]=24 "Ooh, the light is pretty good in here, let me look..."

He says to Bugs, ”All yours!” Moving aside, so the thief can get a better look at the loose brick. He waits to see if it leads to an another nasty trap…hopefully it’s a clue as to the bandit’s intentions with all this death and zombification found in these caves.
