My three youngest tried it. The older kids thought it wasnt cool enough.

The youngest daughter liked it, but never played again....she came up with the best dragon character name ......Prism.
The module where the PCs start as dragon hatchlings, I cant remember the name of it.....

But... The two youngest boys went on townkill missions many times, with a handful of different characters.
Taking the boys through Undermountain while the wife drove us to Colorado and back was a favorite memory for me.
None of the kids still play though.

I bet if I pulled those stunts in my game you'd be foaming at the mouth crying foul murder and calling me a Killer GM. ;)

It never ceases to amaze me how biased folks are towards their young kids in gaming. Why is it we never see a dad or uncle say "I've been playing with the kid and he's hopeless. Johnny is just too dumb to play RPGs properly." Not even simply saying their sprog or nephew is "ok-ish", "so-and-so", "average" or something along that line. Nope, the kid always comes of as some kind of precocious prodigy!

Yeah...right. :D
Ha ha! You go, Vargr, keepin it real. And bring that gonzo on! I wanna see a big purple dragon pop out of this lake when we get all the way there!

Yeah, my daughters (older) were rolling their eyes at my son's (6yo) DM antics, and at times my older couldn't stand her sister's game, but I kept telling them it works like this: run a game that is fun to play in; if you just annoy or piss off your players, you won't have any players; if you're a player in someone else's game, they're the DM, play the game that they bring to the table, enjoy it for what it is because they're putting effort and imagination into it, don't make life unnecessarily hard for them, and remember they're also your potential players; if you really can't stand a game, find some other game to play in or start your own, but no crying about it or making a fuss. No one likes a whiner. The end.

They finally came around after my son led us through this convoluted sequence of seemingly pointless tunnels with pit traps and things like electric sockets in the cave walls, oscillating fans lying around, and boxes of junk electrical parts (I kid you not one bit). Then we found and killed that dragon and he let one of my daughters play a character from the "real world" that somehow teleported in to replace her just-deceased dwarf, with a pistol in hand and a limited number of bullets. That's just how his game runs, and it somehow really works if you just go with it. If I believed in such things, I'd think Gary and Dave are up there smiling somewhere...

Now if you want a dose of reality, I'm pretty hard on them when they're sucky players, which was very often at first and still pretty regular. I call them out on bad attitudes and lackluster play all the time. I've kicked my oldest out of my game before to teach her a lesson, ran a session without her. I don't think my kids are prodigies or even particularly good players at this point. They're all a bit shy, they get distracted, and their attitudes often make me want to just quit. But they have their flashes of brilliance, their own gaming styles and things they like. They've put their own preferences into the games they run, they've had to adjust their games to keep their players happy, they've become better players since running their own games, and I enjoy each of their games for very different reasons.

If nothing else, gaming sparks their imaginations and gets them working on skills they otherwise see as chores done only in school. Hopefully they grow up to be doctors and make lots of money so they can take care of their poor old dad, ha ha! (there's MY fantasy)

And I get you, Stonjuz. My 4yo doesn't have the attention span to play right now. Maybe he never will. Shrug. He's shaping up to be a linebacker/wrestler/gymnast I think, so it's all good. My daughters are getting toward that teenage time, and I fully expect one or both of them will drop out at some point. Roleplaying won't be cool enough, too embarrassing, whatever. It's ok I guess. Those Undermountain moments can't last forever I guess... 8-)

If you play Dagger, I'll be curious to know how it goes, Saalaria...

Two things before I post next.

1. How comes Andrin missed his target with a 20?
2. Saalaria stated that Swilbosh wanted to cover Andrin in case of attack, and I stated that Andrin retreats behind Swilbosh so that he won't stand in the front line. Still, Andrin was attacked. How was that possible?

RS - I got Dagger from Drive Thru - looks interesting and not what I was expecting (less rules) but that of course is a benefit for a younger person...We are giving it a spin this Friday so I'll let you know how it goes.

Yeah, it's VERY rules light. Like I said, my 6yo can almost run it by himself after already knowing the basics of how to play D&D (needs help reading monster stat blocks especially, he's good with the math and tables), so it's def something kids even younger than that can play, just describing actions and rolling dice...

Have fun!

To Ogirdor and Thurinor, it is going to be hard as heck and take a lot of time to dig burial pits for 7 people when you don't have any tools. Perhaps different rites are in order?

Of course, if you are willing to dig with your hands and spend the required time...

Yeah, I thought that would be the case. Are there sufficient stones in the area that could be used to make a cairn?

A cairn? large enough for seven bodies? Nope, there aren't anywhere near enough stones in the clearing for that.

There's wood all over the place though. This is a forest after all.

Its a trick .... to get us to burn the forest down. But á pyre was my first thought too.

Tsk...tsk...tsk... I'll have you know, Sir, I do not trick players into doing anything. Let them weave their own rope and hang themselves at their pleasure. :)

But seriously, this a clearing with a pond. It is early Spring and you have a Ranger and Druid in the party. If you manage to burn down the forest that would be a major undertaking worth recording for future generations.

I concur: make a pyre, light it, and get the heck out of there...

Gentlemen,

I'm leaving this game. It was a pleasure adventuring together with you, but for me it's time to move on. Keep Andrin alive and well or sacrifice him to the dark gods - whatever suits you more - and good luck to you all!

:)

Folks, this will be my last announcement here:

This campaign is now officially over.

I am no longer your GM and you are no longer my players. Should you find yourselves a new fool willing to pour in the time and effort required to run this thing, let me know and I will pass on the reigns of thread moderation to him/her.

But we dont have the module.

Turns out, this is another story the dwarf has forgotten the details to.

There must be some other issues here .
Why not take us to the ending encounter? Or even, just tell us what happens?
is the module complete? are the other chapters in the series uk1-5 needed to understand?
Oh well, thanks for not just vanishing.....that would be the easy way.
I, for one, will miss his dm style (up until the end i mean)

Seems as if my leaving the group and a PM that I sent the DM before was the reason for this.

I'm so sorry - it was clearly not my intention to stop the game. :(

Wow, seriously didn't see that coming. Really was enjoying this game's tone, but it doesn't sound as if Vargr can be persuaded to change his mind... :?

Don't feel bad, Andrin. Unless you told him off or something, I don't see how one PM or leaving the game made this happen all by itself. Sounds more like the straw that broke the camel's back. I'm sorry too, if anything I did contributed...

Maybe I'm a fool, and I'm sure I'm not Vargr and I can't promise I'd be as good a DM or keep close enough to the same playstyle going, but I'd be willing to switch out playing Thurinor for DMing at least to the end of the module. As long as enough want to continue. I won't do it for just one or two folks and then have to hunt for 3-5 players...

Let me know, and if not, no skin off my teeth...

Yikes.

Well thanks for all the DMing so far, Vargr. I'm guessing the constant player turnover was making this more work than fun for you. I can only imagine how hard it would be to run one of these. I barely have time to post sometimes. Can't imagine preparing everything.

I'd be more than happy to continue, though we'd be down two players. And the way we've been rolling lately we need all the help we can get... I guess we could post a notice and hope for the best...
