Jakob shook his head. "We'll cover it until zero eight, unless things get lively. Skip has internal protection and my door openers."

He looked at Frank. "Good troops take time to make their decision. I recommend Gaughan send a few Guard up to the OP with us, and give everyone time to sound things out. A small commando team like Major East's is nice, but we're not there yet. We could fill the role of a light company, with some recruiting. With some training we can get to basic Raider capability, and that's a higher paying market."

OOC: "zero eight" is 0800, if anyone needed to know. :)

Prerna nods. "I agree."

"OK, lets start things rolling with Gaughan. Hopefully, we'll only be here a few more days, so you're right that we don't have time to waste"

I'll call 'im up then. Meanin' ter anyway, suggest the Guard start findin' faults on their vehicles as need fixin' urgent.

Jess contacts Gaughan to make the suggestion and extend the offer of recruitment for good troopers. Both things on the QT of course.

If there is nothing else to discuss then Frank will call the meeting to a close.

Prerna checks on the roof outpost, and makes arrangements for the sentry duties with the other team leaders.

While you are re-arranging, I don't mind helping out, but next time, please give me a role I have some training in...I can interpret sensor data but this is only the second time I have ever flown a drone - I'm lucky I didn't crash it.

Prerna grins. "So now you're trained in drone operations, Lieutenant. The drones are semi-autonomous, they don't crash unless they're shot down, or the operator directs them into an obstacle." She parks her hip on a sandbagged revetment. "This is the world of the mercenary," she waves her hand to take in the lovely panorama visible from the rooftop. "We're underfunded, unsupported, and we frequently operate in places where the locals want to use our entrails for tiedown ropes. Half the time, we don't even know who our enemies are, even after they've stopped shooting at us."

Prerna's smile fades, to be replaced with an earnest expression. "If you don't want to be here, and by that I mean that you aren't willing to make the sacrifices to be a mercenary, then you don't belong here, and you will get yourself or one of us killed. Personally, I think you did fine, and I don't blame you for your reaction, nor for voicing your concerns. Just keep doing what you're doing, grab the thingamabob-whatever-it-is we hand you the next time, and figure it out."

All

The (what’s left of) the night passes without incident and while morning finds coffee more than popular a strange sense of “stillness” if not quite “peace” seems to have settled over Star Town. The townsfolk emerge and go about their new morning routine drawing their now freely available water from the bowsers before mostly setting to logging the work hours that fulfill their contractual obligations.

The OP on the Mansion’s rooftop reports that a pair of “the other mercs” are patrolling on foot and appear to be very welcome among the business people and pedestrians of Star Town.

By mid morning the Baron has arrived in the VIP area and the latest diplomat attended meeting kicks off and then breaks for a buffet lunch taken in the VIP area. The “distraction” restrictions being suspended during this time.

Frank nods "Good idea, I was thinking something similar. Tread carefully, I'm not sure how welcome we will be. Mending bridges is always a good idea, as is trying to fix busted launches"

If not frowned upon Frank will take the lunch as an opportunity to spend some time with Polly and take a read of those attending.

Prior to the delegates meeting Frank will speak to the officers and see if we can put together some cover for pool use by one of two of us at a time if it will get us closer and give us a better view.

Jess would prefer not to be poolside - hence the early bid for an expedition. If needed she will of course be available.

Frank is happy to excuse Jess from the poolside attendance, she has important things to do in town.

Prerna puts in an appearance at the pool, but she's wearing shorts and a T-shirt, and she's staying out of the water.

While Jakob would love to lounge by the pool with Liv, she's more than likely going to be in with the Big Dip and he's going to be drilling the QRF in case the Junge don't like Jess' jiggles. Unless she's now jiggling exclusively, in which case the Junge would be too depressed to do anything at all.

Frank

ooc: I just want to make sure that two things are understood. First that Jess should only proceed if she has promises of safety from the Junge and she is as happy as she can be that they are sincere. The second is that there will be no QRF sent to the town if there is a problem. If there is a problem then Frank will contact Erica East and do his best to fix the problem, ie. negotiate for Jess's release if that is needed (he'll even offer himself up instead) but a QRF is off the table.

Oh yes, and the lieutenant can find time in his busy schedule to take a turn at the poolside.

"Your call," Jakob said. His face was locked to neutral as he faced Frank. "But if you're not willing to take care of your people then you don't have a unit where people will want to stay."

Frank looks directly the Lieutenant

Yes, lieutenant, it is my call as I believe my rank is Colonel, and you will address me properly in the future. It is our current job to protect the delegates and you will do your turn in that respect. While training is important that is not your only responsibility in this company. I am talking about taking a break from training for a few hours. If you have a problem with how this company is run then I suggest that we discuss it once this job is over and we are on our way back to Collace"

Polly is delighted to take lunch with Frank she outlines the significant developments from the morning meeting. She relates “Professor Benson delivered his preliminary findings this morning. I’m no geologist but it seems that the Baron’s “hunch” that Inchin held some value was, at last, vindicated. The planet’s crust holds deep deposits of Iridium – vital for jump drive components and also “captive” water that could be released by a straightforward industrial process”.

She smiles “The Baron is, of course, delighted. In fairness the Professor was very cautious and stressed that these really were indications and needed much more research. Alas, the Baron was halfway through his second Jägerbomb by this stage and calling for a bottle of Cristal to wash it down! It’s fair to say he wasn’t interested in listening”.

“Drace Keening was also very interested. He immediately pointed out that rapid development of this asset would void the Trexalon vs. Collace conflict over Pavabid and also side step the issues over mineral extraction caused by Pavabid’s “difficult” theocracy”.

“This afternoon the agenda has been rescheduled to allow time for the discussion of bidding for investment in Inchin’s development”. Looking momentarily miffed she adds “I now find I have both a “walk on part” and the Clan are disbarred from bidding. Mr. Keening, oozing feigned sincerity and regret in equal measure, pointed out that the Clan are technically the Baron’s lawyers - since we took over the lawyer Moresby’s business interests on Collace. Unfortunately it seems that the Baron was one of Moresby’s dormant clients”. She frowns pensively “It’s true enough and confirmed by the Baron but I’m not sure this can be coincidence!”
