Yes. Varas will let the winner stay for free at his house whenever he wants. He'll also pay for their drinks.

Varas takes note of Orrin, sizing him and Dorvar as his biggest competition. He sticks with his strategy. He sips another tankard leisurely.


Leisurely drink (13) [1d20-2] = 18-2 = 16

It seems Orrin's display has unnerved him. He inhales some suds and sprays those nearby as he coughs.

He finishes it with no problem, but the suds seem to have taken a toll on him

Not ducking from the spray fast enough, Orrin wipes his face before grabbing another brew. He glances at Varas and grins.

"I suppose I was due for a shower. Hadn't had one yet this month, thanks!

We'd better settle in, this might take a while, eh Dorvar?"

He hoists a fourth brew to his lips and drinks it slower than the first three, but still fast enough to keep up with the others.

Normal Drink (CON 16) [1d20] = 7

"Ahhh... Is it just me, or are these getting tastier?"

Halfred pulls another cup toward himself, blinking and staring at its contents for several minutes before lifting it to his lips. He slowly starts sipping it; the alcohol has clearly started having its effect on the diminutive halfling.

It's clear that he has no idea how much he's nursing this drink: at the twenty-minute mark there are still several swallows left in his mug. A few minutes later he drains the ale, looks around with bleary eyes, hiccups, and asks "did I win?" before dropping his head to the bar top. A gentle snore issues from him a few minutes later.

"One down and the game has barely begun, gentleman, and lest I forget , Lady." says Martin with a tip of his mug to Olympia. He then proceeds to casually drink it off while watching the others down their ales.

Kennit licks his lips. It's become evident this dwarven ale is stronger than that of the gentlefolk of Gillshire. He peaks over to another of his halfling breathren, already half in the bag. The dwarf next to him is tossing drinks back like they are water. Kennit gives him an impressed smirk and reaches for another mug, savoring the taste and biding his time (normal speed).

Ghrym chuckles as the halfling dozes off. "This is the last of the old season's batch, since we'll be cracking the new barrels tomorrow. Definitely the strongest stuff I have in the house!" He guffaws and goes back to keeping the spectators' cups filled.

Olympia takes her time with the next drink, sipping the ale at a moderate pace. This does her no favors, however--at the last few gulps, she chokes up bubbles. "Froth in my nose!" she screams.

Dorvar looks around at the competitors amusedly. He was biding his time, watching to see how others fared before he began competing. Well boys, he nods at Olympia, adding, and lady, good luck and let the best dwarf- uh, drinker, win!

Dorvar drinks his first ale at a normal pace, then upends the empty mug over his head, catching the last few drops in his mouth. It should be a crime to waste even a single drop.

Martin is pacing himself, but still downs his ale faster than most--half-time for natural 1 on his CON roll. He's a thirsty man!

Valorei currently looks the strongest, with 4 drinks under his belt in only 22 minutes! Unfortunately, that's taking a toll on his system and the rapid consumption is guaranteed to catch up with him before too long...

"Hey buddy!" exclaims Varas, speech slightly slurred, as he sees Dorvar enter the game. "This is fun!"

Varas takes another full tankard and sips it leisurely.

Leisurely drink (10) [1d20-2] = 9-2 = 7, added minutes [1d3] = 3

He finishes it with a couple of minutes to spare, and manages to inhale none of it!

The crowd seems to be favoring the elf at the moment. Though there are a few cheers for Orrin, the dwarf and Martin the human. A few even cheer on the big woman, Olympia, though she is rapidly slowing and starting to meet Kennit's lumbering pace.
Kennit is just starting to get his second wind after foolishly chugging the dwarf's potent ale for the first round.

Orrin manages to make enough room in the fray to hoist himself up on the bar. He stands there with a drink in hand.

"Friends! This contest is all in good fun, but we lost one of our own just the other day, and I would be remiss if we didn't raise a glass to a great thief, and a good friend. To Lars!"

He downs his ale quickly, his eyes misting over with emotion. Clearly, the sentiment has gotten the better of him, and he struggles to finish it without falling off the bar. He recovers, and climbs back down to his seat.

The halfling at the bar lifts his head momentarily, mumbles something that sounds like "to Lars", sucks the last few dregs from one of the mugs before him, and drops his head to the bar-top again. Presently he lifts his head again, slides down off his stool, and wanders toward the door.

I propose that they should also get a drinking song composed in their honor (but I'm not one to spend Varas' money for him. Maybe there could be an entry fee.)

EDIT: Forgot to mention...Martin is a beast!

Olympia tries again--carefully raising the flagon to her lips, then taking regular sips. Before she knows it, the time limit is upon her, and with her ale still unfinished she is disqualified! With still a bit of drink to go, she curses and decides to take her time with the rest.

"Go go go!" she cheers the remaining contestants on!

Olympia paces herself out of the competition, and signs of the effects of the booze are beginning to show themselves more or less across the board, with Martin a notable exception. Apparently his order has figured out the trick of turning wine into blood like the catholics.

The small crowd of spectators that has gathered to watch the events (some adventurers, plenty of folks working on festival preparations looking for a break) are roused by Orrin's heartfelt toast and a round of cheers go up in Lars' honor.
