Rainey thinks about it for a few minutes, then casts charm person on the goblin, then goes over to him and tries to calm him down quietly, giving him some food and a sip of water.

Charmed Goblin
Rainey attempts a different approach and casts charm person on the goblin. Unable to speak in the creature's native tongue, the mage is forced to rely on simple gestures to communicate with the enraged captive. Rainey puts both hands, palms towards the goblin, and slowly raises and lowers them in a "calm down" motion.

The goblin diverts its attention from Horatio to Rainey and immediately seems to be responding.

Now, that the goblin is in a more peaceful state, the mage slowly approaches the bound goblin and carefully brings a sip of water the creature's mouth. It drinks. It nods affirmatively when show a bit of food. Aware of its tendency to bite, Rainey mimics tossing the food in the goblins direction and encourages it to open its mouth. It does, and the food transfer is successful.

The goblin is now much calmer, and definitely friendly towards Rainey.

Junius will translate if necessary, though he may affect the charming after being so rude... use someone else if able.

Rainey will bring the goblin over to the dead body in the cart, and ask "Why ... are ... you ... hauling ... a ... dead ... body?"

He'll accompany this with a bunch of shrugging, pointing at the dead body in the cart, then up the road. He'll lift the body's arm and drop it, to point out how dead the body is, then shrug, a confused look on his face.

If somebody can translate, that would be great.
Otherwise, maybe the goblin will just say something worthwhile.

Harold translates, hoping it doesn't affect Rainey's charm.

Canun is as surprised as anyone that his mace ended the raggy thief's life. He wipes the gore on the deceased thief's garments and grabs the gold pouch. He hands it to Rainey as he interrogates the goblin, hoping this will entice the wretch to be very forthcoming with information.

I wonder if the thief was working with the goblins somehow, Dimly wonders aloud. Strange that he'd happen upon us so close the goblins, and to try to pickpocket such a heavily-armed group out in the middle of the wilderness. He shrugs, and speaks in the harsh goblin tongue, gesturing to Rainey:

AdaRue gasps when Canun kills the thief, admonishing her fellow cleric for ending the life of someone so wretched over a few coins. What does Hubbard say about charity? She is similarly shocked by the juvenile actions of Horatio.

Concerned that the third was not acting alone, AdaRue takes the opportunity to distance herself for a moment and starts scouting the surrounding area, shield in hand. She will call or to the others if she encounters anyone.

"What foolish god equates thievery with charity?" retorts Canun. "We do not know the source of the gold he held. Those coins could have been pilfered from the purses of the poor. Left families behind in his wake, starving."

The pudgy cleric blinks, thinking. Then he puffs out his chest.

"Yes, I saved lives. Would you have me let him continue to Brighton, where he would continue to steal?" He spits at the ground. "No, sparing him would not be charity. It would be promoting lawlessness and thievery. I acted in full accordance of Hubbard's law, and I would do so again."

Questioning the Goblin
Rainey walks over to the dead body in the cart and waves his charmed goblin companion to follow him, which the creature does. "Why ... are ... you ... hauling ... a ... dead ... body?" he asks. The goblin stares at Rainey with a confused look on its face, but despite its natural annimocity towards his race, the goblin does seem to accept the translation from Junius. Apparently unaware that the slave had become deceased, the goblin starts to panic once this updated condition is brought to its attention. "Rhuun dan khruur draal. Rhuun dan khruur draal!" it repeats in goblin, a worried look on its face. Junius translates the chating for those not fluent in goblin: "Boy was not dead. Boy was not dead!"


Rainey gets the goblin to calm down, and it goes on to explain that the boy was being taken to Vir-kayik -- their leader -- to serve as a slave, and that Vir-kayik is going to be most displeased if he returns empty handed. "Ghakaan A shuuch hegaan Zer-mash dar okaan?" the goblin says to Rainey, pointing to Dimly. "Rhorec dhalaan ghalaan huul tagaan."

Translations: This latest request from the goblin quickly halts the bickering between AdaRue and Canun once it has been translated for them.

A wild grimace sprouts across Dimly's face, as he responds in the goblin tongue:

Junius asks what killed the boy, then.

"Maybe there are other goblin tribes? Would Vir-kayak like one of them?" asks Canun, hoping the question will be translated.

The Questioning Continues
The goblin, clearly less hostile now, is more receptive to questions it can understand from others besides Rainey. "Service?" it asks of Dimly inquiry, confused. "Vir-kayik is looking for slaves. You work. Hard."

The death of the slave he was carting is a surprise to him. "Me not know," he admits. "He was weak, though. Maybe the crash killed him?"

The goblin also shares that all the goblins in this area are under Vir-kayik's rule.

The goblin cackles.

When Rainey encourages his new "friend" to share the reason for his laughter, the goblin looks from one member to the next before ultimately settling its sight back on his new controller. "If this all you have," it starts. "You in trouble."

Rainey looks at his friends, as if assessing their ability, then he shrugs, and says to the goblin:

"Yeah, maybe. If we want to fight Vir-Kayak. I don't care about that... I care that his slaves, my people... they are dying. We don't want them to die. Like that one." He points at the dead slave when saying this.

"You guys are mining, right? Digging? I think Vir-Kayak found something. Something that's making us sick. Are the goblins sick, too? We want to fix THAT problem. Everybody wins."

The Questioning Continues
The following is translated to Rainey, and the goblin appears to understand the breakdown in communication, as it now speaks directly to the translator in his native tongue, then looks to Rainey once it has finished speaking to await his response:

"Mining?" the goblin repeats, puzzled. "Vir-Kayak not mining. He home." the goblin says flatly, explaining that Vir-Kayak is avenging the theft of his fortress. The goblin echoes the scenario Thatcher shared, but from the opposite perspective: The goblins, led by Vir-Kayak, had settled in old goblin halls. The 'bad guys' came and killed most of their numbers and sealed it closed. Vir-Kayak is simply reclaiming what is his.

And no, the goblin is not aware of any goblins being sick.


"You look like the 'bad guys,'" the goblin says flatly. "If you enter Vir-Kayak's home, you will be the enemy."
